My beefs tend more towards management than the games themselves, but...

Baseball: Outlaw the bench clearing "brawl." You have a beef with someone, you can fight them (and take your fine/ suspension), but no more of these tired scenes of 60 guys all pouring out of dugouts and bullpens to push each other and shout. Technically its already against the rules but take a page from the nba and start punishing players who leave the dugout, bullpen and their defensive positions.

Baseball “fights” always start with a pitcher and a batter. Teams won’t stand by and let their pitcher (likely) get his ass whooped until the umps break it up, unless...they take a page from the NHL and have an unwritten rule for “goon relief pitchers” and “goon pinch hitters”...and let the beef play out amongst those guys until they hit the grass!

NFL. No punts! You get four downs to get 10 yards. NFL ratings would go through the roof and we’d see triple digit scores every weekend!

I’m so with you on this! Tried to watch the games of the last World Cup and ended up turning off the TV every other game! It’s a disgrace, these spoilt and overpaid millionaire a$&holes

Formula 1... so many things.

1) Instead of penalizing the drivers when core components of the car (engine, gearbox etc.) are changed more than the allotted number of times how about penalizing the team in the constructors championship or even financially. Its got nothing to do with the drivers.

2) Ban anyone with the surname Hamilton. The sport doesn't need crybabies.

3) Bring back the grid girls. I mean really. The grid girls are professional models.. modelling is what they do. All you've done is lost them money.

4) Anyone that teams with Max Verstappen needs a pay raise.

I could go on but these are a great start.

you do that and you will have defenders all over receivers making it impossible for most catches. but certainly sort them out. some shockers given. not sure there is an easy answer to that.

Let’s go to the college, one foot in rule. Also, let instant replay for catches be decided by the fans in the stadium and at home ala american idol. Lord knows the fans know what a catch is better than the refs or the league office.

*For reference, I hate the Cowboys, but couldn’t pass up posting this.

1. I personally like two feet for professionals... mostly because I love seeing the athleticism some of these guy have to be able to get both feet in bounds.

2. Could you imagine the value of HOME field advantage?? LOL. But a live vote (via app or social media) amongst those watching live would be VERY interesting.

If you are going to let the DB’s get away with more and eliminate the ticky-tack bullshit, I think you have to go to the one foot rule.

as far as the voting, it wouldn’t be limited to the fans in the stadium. It would just be an app everyone could use

That's true. As much as we may disagree with some calls, I do think the refs are trained well. I think most of the discrepancy lies in the verbiage (or lack thereof) in several rules, i.e. "process of the catch"

MY New Rules in Boxing:

*The fighters have to stand approx. 4 feet's distance from each other and throw their punches at that distance, no getting closer - NO HUGGING/NO CLINCHING. That is why I don't bother watching boxing anymore. If  I want to watch a hug and dance show I'll watch Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movies. I don't mean to sound a know-it-all...I know those punches hurt and they clinch up to stop the other fighter from hitting them any further. For my new rules, they're free to back up from each other if they have to, but to return to their 4 foot distance and throw their punches until one falls, or until the bell. If a fighter's about to fall - THEN they can rush in to finish the job. Clinches can occur as they may during that, as the other fighter attempts to save himself from the knock-out. But in all, I've kind'a had it watching a sport where the referee has to spend the entire number of rounds it lasts going, "BREAK! BREAK! BREAK!"  >yawn<

And that's why I'm a fan of mixed martial arts; they can grab, they can clinch, they can go to the ground, they can kick, punch, wrestle, choke...and the referee is only there to make sure they don't kill each other!

Yes, but everyone likes to see the Patriots and Cowboys lose, so it will work out ?

Golf. No free drops. Play the ball where it lies, as the sport was intended. Too much messing about if it is on a walkway etc...

My favorite sport is boxing, refs need to immediately deduct points if a warning has already been given, AND there should be no reward for cowardice, no matter how skilful.

I’m sure other boxing fans know what I’m talking about with that second point, but it seems asinine to give a fight to someone who walks (or runs!) backward for nearly the entire fight.

Australian Rules Football - There has been a lot of talk in AFL circles about changing the rules to try and free up congestion around the ball. The AFL is an evolving game and has had major rule changes all through its history. It will be interesting to see where we get to next year. I guess it's a compliment to my mighty Tigers (reigning premiers) who base their game on pressure and making the opposition turn the ball over inside forward 50. I think next year they will increase the length of the goal square so kick ins can travel beyond the 50 metre mark. They will also most probably bring in starting positions after a goal is scored with 6 players from either side inside each forward 50. Even though, it may affect my mighty Tigers' game plan I'm in favour of it. We are still getting good crowds to AFL, a lot of it off the back of the Tigers' success, but people are getting turned off because of the amount of players around the ball and defensive structures protecting zones and the centre of the ground, forcing boring long kicks towards the boundary line instead of taking the game on with an attacking mentality through the middle. It will be exciting to see which side adapts the best or has the best team structure to take advantage. Hopefully it just makes my Tigers even better! And yes, I'm off to the game tonight. Lucky that I work just 15mins walk from the mighty MCG. Go Tiges!

nrl - fuzz, the scrum is simply there to draw in players so space for teams to attack from the restart. no one expects a contested scrum any more. but if you just have a tap, teams are already across the field defending.

a player has ten seconds to get off the field when sinbinned. if he does not, it becomes 20 minutes.

soccer - diving. simple. one game first time in career, four the second, 8 every other time. player fined the equivalent of his salary for that period. club fined three times his salary - or some large amount - every time. the clubs will very quickly get sick of paying for that crap and their players will be told.

rugby. pretty much start again. the deliberate knock down gone for starters. stupidest rule in sport. next up, scrums. fuzz, do you preferred the non-contested scrum in league or the joke that is most of rugby. the highlight of this season has been the reds scrum. so good to see a great scrum in action. thanks brad thorn. however, most rugby scrums have to be reset so many times. almost every scrum wastes 90-120 seconds.

fuzz, next time the rugby and league are both on, as soon as a scrum is called in rugby, flick to the league. you will be able to watch a set of 6 tackles before the scrum is decided. sometimes close to two. it is a farce. who wants to watch refs stumbling about trying work this out time and again. i'd much rather watch a set of 6 and some action. any wonder rugby is losing viewers and support?

I get the point of it, Ken, but I still think it is stupid. Yes, it is meant to give an advantage to the attacking side, but I still want to see a proper scrum. Wouldn't it be more exciting to see the defenders win the ball back and turn the odds in their favour?

As for Union, you get 2 chances at a scrum. If one side keeps collapsing the scrum, a free kick is awarded to the other side. Do it more than 3 times in a match, a penalty kick is awarded to the other side.

MLB

- Automate the strike zone. We have the technology. They show the box on the screen after the pitch to indicate whether it was a proper strike or ball. Get those home plate umpires some google glass or something. Or better yet just don't have them involved with calling strikes or balls, period.

-Bring back widespread acceptance of steroids. Because the game was just more fun to watch.

NBA/WNBA

- make fouls harder to call and eliminate goaltending. I want to see a brawl to get that ball in the hoop. American Gladiators powerball style.

-Coincidingly, I'd imagine it would cause the wnba popularity to skyrocket.

NFL - The new helmet rule just doesn't make sense. How can you not lead with a helmet? Just go back to leather helmets.

Every kid growing up in Dallas at the time knew and could vividly retell the series of events leading up to and following “the punch.” Sometimes the retelling would get more detailed and grandiose, until the internet came around.

That’s what the internet has taken from every generation for now on ... the tall tales and mythological legends that kids make up and embellish about their sports heroes. The internet is the bullshitter’s worst enemy.

The best clip of the Ryan-Ventura brawl is about 5 minutes into the broadcast when the announcers show an angle the camera got of Nolan Ryan laying his punches right on top of Ventura’s head. There’s no doubt that young man was feeling those hits the next day!

Agreed. NFL is starting to get crazy with these safety rules. Can't hit high, can't hit low, can't grab the back of the pads/jersey,can't use a helmet, etc.  Player safety is important, I get it, but just let guys go out there and do what they get paid to do.

I love most of these.  If I had to choose one that would have the greatest impact on any sport offered so far, I'd say it is eliminating the off-sides rule in Soccer. I agree it would do wonders to make the game more exciting.

My personal pet peeve is Golf, and the out of bounds rule.  Nothing worse than playing a round behind (or god forbid with) a sports-lawyer, who makes someone walk back and re-tee if a ball goes OB rather than take a penalty and a drop.  Ditto for lost balls.  In the pros, this rule should stay the same, as they have people who know where the ball is immediately after it lands, so it's not too much of a time suck, but amateurs trying to sneak their barely-bogey-golf scorecards through the USGA rules gauntlet is what turns your average Saturday into a 5 1/2 hour affair.

Losing the offside rule would change football, or soccer as you call it, into a game where two teams constantly punt the ball from one goal mouth to the other. Like really big table tennis. No players would be in the middle of the field. That's why it's a rule. I don't even particularly follow footy any more but this would make it completely unwatchable.
Ten minutes in a time machine to Chopper Harris in his heyday as a penalty for diving is my rule change.

AFL....so many rule changes and now considering zones ...seriously administrators are like the umpires....they have the only job in the world where you can fxcp all day long and get paid for it...

Automatic strike zone is not a bad idea. I'm actually lenient of umpires in regards to calling balls and strikes when watching a game, I find I rarely contest a call as a spectator and I think Baseball umpires in general do a good job. However, why not trial automatic strike zones in Spring Training or Minor leagues and see how it goes?

In regards to steroids, I'm sure you post in jest, however, I find that when I talk to my son about the history of the game, invariably I will bring up Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens' achievements. Will or should they make the Hall of Fame? Let's see how it pans out.

Wow...I'm impressed how Nolan Ryan grabbed Robin Ventura in a headlock prior to punching him. How is that for applying experience in the Major Leagues! ?

It gives me a new perspective in regards to Nolan Ryan being a Hall of Famer. What a competitor!

NHL - Remove instigator rule.  Only penalize the dive in case of embellishment penalties.  Remove the shootout.

UFC - Miss weight, you have to fight your next fight at whatever class you weighed in as.

NCAAF - Targeting penalty needs to have a more lenient option for less egregious cases.   Institute some kind of compensation to schools for healthy players skipping bowl games prior to the draft.  Impose a 5 yard penalty for a fair catch.  Stop making defensive holding an automatic first down

NFL - Adopt NCAA overtime rules.  Impose a 5 yard penalty for a fair catch.  Stop making defensive holding an automatic first down

All sports - Mic up the players.
