Has it really been that long? Perhaps this post should be moved to the “Going to the Dentist” thread...

I see.... so we should celebrate our failures as well. Interesting move Habanos S.A.

Maybe they will do an anniversario special edition of the anejados program as well since it's been such a raving success...

The case could be made that your collection would be tainted with it.

I have had a few of the Open Masters and found them very enjoyable for a smoke on the milder side. Also enjoyed the Open Regata.
Not sure why the Open line never gets any love.
I certainly find them enjoyable

Apparently you are not alone, because they are still around.

Yeah, it's pretty rare to see one mentioned in any "what did you smoke today " threads on any of the forums I follow.

They are certainly different from the regular Montecristo, but taste very good to me.

They just seem to be universally maligned for some reason

Yes, I've noticed that too. Probably because of all the hate going around.

I see them posted on some Facebook groups though.

Yeah, I really don't understand the hate for them

I think the biggest issue is that they simply don't represent Cuban Montecristo at all flavorwise.  I don't find them vile like others have been posting, they're just not Montes as we know them and they're just not very exciting...but they aren't supposed to be.  Like the Romeo Cedros, they're meant to keep novices from turning green trying to smoke something like a young RASS for a first cigar or they're meant for a cigar to stick in your mouth while doing something else, like golfing, without knocking you on your ass.  No hatred necessary, if you don't like 'em, don't buy 'em.

What flavors do you get? I've only smoked a couple of each size, but they universally tasted like the packaging they came in, and nothing else. Cardboard with some light woodiness, no development or character. That seems to be most peoples experience as well. They keep making them though, so somebody must be buying them.

My issue with them is that they are _way_ overpriced for what they are, and that fools newbies into thinking they are getting a quality Monte.    They are a yard gar imho.

This is the kind of stuff that Gurkha pulls with NCs, and some of the people can be fooled some of the time.

Some people seem to love them. (i've never had one TBH)

I guess it's just one of those cigars made for a certain market, just not the type of folks who frequent forums like this who take their cigars a bit more seriously than the average golf player.

Although I love a New World cigar, that flavour description sounds like 90% of all Dominican Davidoffs I've ever had.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone claim that. Yes, I'm sure there are plenty of people who like them but there are probably as many people who love Guantanamera as love the Opens.

The Eagle has always been generally considered a good cigar. It was also the largest CC in regular production for quite some time which had appeal for many people. However the others are just not on that level. The Master is a Robustos which helps its popularity and the Junior has appeal as a small cigar and perhaps for a novice or ladies and makes for a good handout. But the Regata is a ridiculous cigar.

I think the branding and theme of the Opens has been fairly effective. I think the pricing just a tad below the standard Monte line is intentional. Overpriced but strategic.

I think they do have a slight tinge of Monte but it's really tough to get much out of it. It's like a Monte with all the seco removed. A volado-only blend. It's like a wispy ghost of a Monte. A monte with the lights on but nobody home. I don't know how you can taste anything out on the golf course with the wind in your face. I'd want something with flavor like a Favoritos or Tubulares. Something easy drawing that burns well.

I noticed that there is sometimes a disconnect in terms of the amount of hate noise (for certain cigars) generated on this forum vs actual sales. e.g. if you read the comments, there are a lot of rather extreme opinions stating how bad LEs or Anejados or *insert some other double-banded series* are. But if you participate in 24:24, most LEs sell out in an instant (except for the Propios, I noticed).

I think the moderate voices get drowned out slightly.

For me personally, I don't like the open line. I had a few sticks several years ago of various sizes, and never liked any one. They generally tasted like cardboard with chlorophyll to me. I would try again if given one, but my limited cigar budget simply dictates that I have other priorities.

$30 A STICK?!?!? Is anybody here a lucky owner of this release? If so, help me understand why.

Like I said above, I don't hate these cigars, I just find them very boring and one dimensional. Are people hoping to flip these later? They didn't even attempt to maintain the color match on the wrappers as they repackaged them. I just don't get it.

The strength is also listed as "medium to full" on that website. That doesn't even match HSA's description. We're discussing the importance of package (not just for cigars) in another thread. This box being sold out makes me think we've reached a point where pretty packaging is the only thing that matters anymore, what you're actually buying doesn't seem to matter. We're talking near BHK prices for a robusto sized yard gar.

BHK are over 3 times that price. We're talking somewhere between CoLa and Espies/Sig VI prices here (still ridiculous).

Edit: Also this vendor tends to jack up prices as supply goes down, so it might have been less before it sold out.
