When is the last time that you purchased a box of cuban cigars (from anywhere) and found a live beetle?

I can't recall seeing one since around 2006. Holes on occasion yes....a live beetle, no.

However I have heard some differing experiences of late which raised an eyebrow. Let us know the last beetle experience you have had with a box of Cuban cigars.

I have been very lucky and have never purchased a box with a live beetle. I have purchased boxes with beetle damage, but never anything live.

I got a bunch of Monte #2 from a Cuban American friend who went to visit family on the island. This was back in 1998 or so. He wasn't a cigar guy. Almost all of them had beetle holes.

Unfortunately brought a box of Boli PC back from Havana with me last year that had about 8-10 sticks of beetle damage but never saw any live ones in there.  They along with all the others sticks I brought home got frozen anyway.

Same time frame for me as well.

April 2019 bought a box of SP non plus Varadero at airport . Had a live beetle and half the box destroyed.

I have never experienced beetle damage. Means one of two things: 1) I've been very lucky or 2) I have not bought enough Cubans.

One live beetle in my life. Not even sure it was a box from Cuba.

I just remember the horror and pleasure of roasting it alive with my torch!

2-3 years ago I found some beetle holes in some cigars in my stash. Pulled out a few sticks and found something unusual in one particular hole. Put some pressure beside the hole and out came a beetle.

Smoked it immediately, cleaned out the stash, etc etc. No issues since.

I don't remember what cigar it was but the overriding thinking is that it was an upmann no2

I had a beetle outbreak in my humidor from a three pack of HdM back in maybe 2005.

I’ve stopped freezing new boxes, how about y’all? Do you freeze every box for a couple of days?

Found one from an Alex Puntilla a few months back.  Cigars were fine when I bought them, but in the 2 days from grabbing them and getting them home into my freezer, a beetle came out and made a hole.  Luckily it was just one hole and the freezer took care of a possible outbreak.

The risk of buying customs on the island.

Not around in 2006? You're looking a bit grey for a 14 yr old...

Been smoking for 13/14 years and have never come across one. Only ever seen one box with damage and it was a 2001 box of Partagas Sel Privada #1 which had five or six eaten/nibbled on to the extent where I think you could have gotten a half decent jazz rift going out of them. This was in 2013-ish. Beetle was long gone though.

A couple of his I brought back earlier this year had unmistakeable beetle holes but nothing alive—a Talisman and a Puntillas out of four bundles isn’t that bad. I froze everything and haven’t had any issues since. Sucks but definitely need to freeze and closely inspect.
