99call Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 Wow......what a load of total crap. Massively over long, Pacino trapped in 'shouty man' character ever since Scent of a Woman. It worked for that film, but now it's just monotone noise. If you look back to GF1 and 2, Serpico etc, you see the depth and range that he's lost, the ability to be vulnerable, or conversely quietly menacing, it's all gone.....you're left with your slightly deaf, drunk uncle. The ageing thing, has a few seamless moments, but Jesus the bit where Deniro beats up the Grocer, is so strange. It was a 40 yr olds face with the bodily movement of an 90yr old. Really jarring, and odd. As ever I actually thought Pesci, is the one that shines, he's retained his ability to control silences, and tone, and his range of expression, is still that of a top class actor. I'll stick to re-watching Casino......and absolute masterpiece, especially the opening credits! the best opening sequence to a film......ever 2
David88 Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 I enjoyed it. Definitely not an all time classic but it’s good to see a film that isn’t marvel/superheroes being made. Pesci was fantastic. De Niro was good but the de-aging effects were very strange, he seemed to need a body double as his movement was distracting at times (like others have said the scene where he fights the grocer....). I would have liked to see this in the cinema rather than just on netflix though.
helix Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 That's what happened to Hoffa. ?. Great to see those guys back together, decent film, weird CG effects surely not a classic but really enjoyed it.
Burningman Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 Although I enjoyed the film those last 45 minutes seemed totally unnecessary. My family said this was The Expendables, mafia style. Let's get everyone together and make one more before it's too late. The actors playing age appropriate roles looked great on camera. Harvey Keitel killed it along with Ray Romano. Pesci was great as well. I think it was a bit too much to ask of De Niro at this stage of his career. You could tell that some parts were a bit more physically demanding than he was prepared to execute. I feel that most of that physical stuff could have been left to the imagination.
Erm310mce Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 Watched last night and really enjoyed it. Not Scorcese’s best but a very entertaining movie. I do agree it was a long but it’s always great when that cast gets together.
T.52 Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 Did anyone else notice Silvio from the Sopranos (Steven Van Zandt) was the singer in the white tux at the banquet for Frank Sheeran? That made me chuckle. 1

SenorPerfecto Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 Someone said, “A long, geriatric fart that lingers for 3 1/2 hours.”That about sums it up.This is tired old Scorsese, aping Scorsese, with tired old Scorsese actors and $180mil of Netflix money. The Irishmeh. 2 1
Hookmaker Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 Loved it. Scorsese is always great. I just can’t believe how he can muster all those Italian mafioso type guys for e.g. the church wedding scene. Bloody ingenious ??
El Presidente Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 Well it certainly appears to have been successful given the number of members who have watched it Di and I watched it yesterday. Some great parts but most of the time I felt like I was walking through treacle. It was hard work to stay engaged. 2

Worked a treat putting us both to sleep. 3
Eric05 Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 Also felt they probably could of used some other actors and it would of been better, still should of cut it short. He def reached with the talent he had, at this point in their careers. Honestly Casino and Departed will go down as his best films ever.
Riverstyx Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 So my wife fell asleep with 15 minutes left last night and we went to bed - finish the last 15 or call it quits?
JohnS Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 Finish the last 15. The 'keeping the door slightly open' request comes full circle, so-to-speak, at the end.
Nocoins Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 I'm with Lotusguy and Eric. I grew up on Scorsese's movies. I could not stand this one. It needed a serious edit, but that would've only shortened the misery. In particular, I found De Niro's performance to be one-dimensional -- awful. I hate to be a downer, but really, I'm sorry to have seen it. I think this picture proves the point. The Godfather is 30 minutes shorter. The Godfather Part 2 is like 5 minutes shorter. And I don't think anyone ever had to do this in order to tolerate watching them.
JoeyBones777 Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 I'm a Scorsese fan but this is not his best work. Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed...I could keep going but all were way better in just about every regard. I really don't want to see Pacino or DeNiro in another movie. They are way tired. I'm glad I watched it, I was entertained for 2/3 of it but it was certainly not among Scorsese's best.
Ritch Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 Great acting. Brilliant directing and filming. Still not entirely sure what happend or why it needed over three hours. Goodfellas was perfectly paced. Not a wasted moment. The Irishman was typically a new film, get the big names in, get the director in, shoot it in his trade mark style. Get the script writers to finish the script pronto in crayon. Throw loads of money at it.
Philc2001 Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 I liked it a lot, Pacino, Pesche, Deniro, Romano... heck of a cast, but it probably could have been trimmed a bit to keep it under 3 hours. Interesting how the wise guys meet their end, a bit lame, but likely close to reality. Keep the door open was a good touch. If I was going to trim from it, I'd cut a lot of the initial buildup with Deniro's indoctrination into the mob. I think that took about an hour. As for ranking, I wouldn't call it his best, I don't think you can rate this higher than goodfellas, taxi driver, raging bull, departed, or even Wolf. But still it was entertaining and worth watching, especially since it was a Netflix release. 1
gorob23 Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 I liked it and didn't think it dragged at all, but the again I'm old and have the palate of a billy goat so what do i know ? Rob ?♂️
madandana Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 I thought it was pretty good- Not great. What was great was Pesci, I don’t ever remember him in a roll like that (calm). Pacino and DeNiro played that same character they always have played (other than Godfather). I didn’t even notice the de-aging effect. Shows how observant I am .
