Montecristo No.4 UEB May 2018

You know the story with these by now (and Montecristo No.2's). When they are good, they can be exemplary but my goodness can they be 'bog-average' at times. Today's Montecristo No.4 was the sixth from the box and from memory the previous five were fantastic. Today's cigar was just ordinary.

In retrospect, whilst smoking it I thought to myself that it was okay...I could live with what it was offering me, which was very light cocoa, nut and a little citrus twang that keep me interested in the cigar. If only there was more quintessential Montecristo coffee and cocoa flavour in this then I know it would have been like the previous five (and that is unequivocally sensational!).

2017 Mag 54....based on flavor output, I find myself increasingly reaching for this little fatty...great HU flavors but with more body than its brethren

2015 Edmundo...complain all you want about montecristos, but I’ve had wonderful consistency from Edmundos and #2s from the 2015-2016 batches.


2015 E2...always good, sometimes ethereal. This one the former.

Thanks West! I was fortunate to have a few weeks off on vacation leave recently.

I think I recall a specific thread last year about quality control in Habanos cigars. The consensus was that they are handmade products and so if you get something like 22 out of 25 being good to great, then you're cheering. 

The problem here is exacerbated by the fact that Montecristo No.2's and No.4's are so widely produced. You'll run into these ordinary ones from time-to-time.

I'm really liking the May 18 box with the lighter wrappers right now. Smoking great and I think they will only get better with time, if they last that long. I probably won't fire up another of the dark wrappers for at least six months after the example today. I think those are going to be great but will need much more down time.

I've been sitting on theae PSD4s for a while cauas they just didnt seem to want to make the turn, but they have and this MUL MAY 15 PSD4 is smoking nicely now. Good to see so rewarding to know all that waiting pays off eventually. Take care all.

Well... that was a near perfect cigar experience. End of a long and tiring journey: London > Dubai > Entebbe > Kampala. I bought a wonderful looking box of La Gloria Cubana MdO no.4 on the way, and could not resist smoking one when I finally made it to my hotel. Code is ETP ENE 17, and they are a glorious rich vibrant colorado with a hint of golden rosado. First one I clipped was a little tight, so I put it back in the box. Second one I chose more carefully, and had the perfect draw. Then a balcony smoke in the hot afternoon sun with a beer.

Wow. My first ever of these, and I totally get the strong love. It was just outrageously tasty, and wildly complex. A deep, intense, jellied fruit. Like burnt apple crumble, or something like quince, or perhaps over-ripe apricots. Plus a fatty, spicy, animale richness. Frying pan about to turn, perhaps with cumin, maybe a touch of cardamom in it. Then hot fertile earth, mulch and clay at the same time. So much smoke and flavour. Brilliant!
