I can't believe you haven't had this conversation with your best buddy! Cigar smokers are as bad as Crossfitters. Won't stop talking about it! It's your own undoing buddy. Herf away 🤣

Understand the difficulty but if he was a true friend he would appreciate the correct advice and will mean he won't get conned in the future as he might end up buying more of these if you don't tell him.

This will definitely make the lesson hard but will be forgiven in the long run.

Give him a real cuban and do it over drinks and a real cigar!

I would tell him the truth and smoke them anyway.  Make it a fun experiment rather than make him feel foolish.  Have backups ready in case they’re unsmokable or to compare.

My parents lived on Isla Mujeres part time for 20+ years.  There is only one small shop that had real Habanos and it's difficult to find.  So many fake cigars, it's like nothing I have ever seen before.  Absolutely absurd how out in the open they are selling fakes.  If he is still there, have him go to the Naval PX and buy Don Julio Tequila.  They darn near give it away.  Less that half the price of anywhere else.  I was there years ago and it was like $14 USD a bottle.

I am not familiar with Isla Mujeres, but if there is a LCDH there, they could be legit. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Smoking one with him won’t kill you, but will prolly make his day/week/month. Declining after that by not wanting to take “one of his good sticks” is not a bad idea. Just my $.02

There is no LCDH there and only one real Habanos retailer who had very little stock in the best of time.  I'd imagine they don't have anything and LCDH in Cancun must be near bare as well.  Even the weed and coke is probably fake on Isla Mujeres lol...

Before a friends cruise, I said don’t buy any cigars on the beach, as they are all fake. Especially those with a glass top.

Fast forward 10 days, comes back with some glass top cohiba and wants me to take one.
I had to reiterate that those sticks are not from a trusted factory and to smoke at his own risk.

I’m afraid he’s going to ask me if they’re legit…. And I’m a bad liar.

I lost a friend over this.

He gave me a fake.    I told him the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth--and said "don't do it again".

He didn't believe me and got angry.

I guess it is a good thing the State Department never recruited me.

Never be afraid or tentative when asked to tell the truth and doing so.  Lip service is easy, honesty can be rarefied.  Certainly delivery depends on the audience.

I met a guy at a wine dinner who had Behikes.  I told him and he said well if they are fakes they still taste great. I traded a monte 2 for one to be nice, he had brought a great bottle.  Sometimes they don't care...and it smelled like shit.

Most people don't like to admit they got beat or duped.  It's a natural reaction as an initial response.

I see it like this...

I would not knowingly let a friend drink bathtub vodka from an unknown source just because they thought it was Belvedere or Grey Goose...

I would not knowingly let a friend eat carp from a cesspool just because they thought it was wild caught tuna...

I would not knowingly let a friend smoke a fake cigar from an unknown source just because he thought it was legit.

If they are a friend, they will appreciate the information.  If they get mad, likely they are not a friend anyway so let them do whatever they want...

Totally agree and we also can taste whether a cigar is new, old, fake, real, the marca and where they are from. It is very kind of friends to bring us cigars sometimes but I will look on the bottom of the box and say something if there is no code etc.

They are bringing cigars over because of my interest and collection. So I share the info from it and thank them. Other friends may like them, I say, but let’s smoke mine.

Let's put it this way: if you don't tell a person he got ripped off, not only you are not helping him but you are also supporting the counterfeit industry because he will keep buying fakes.

If you tell him in a respectful manner there is no good reason for him to react poorly, if he does he's not the kind of person you want as a friend. With friends, like with cigars, quality trumps quantity every time.

It’s always nice to have an empty glass top box to show friends and warn them. Of course you have to tell him so he doesn’t repeat the mistake. His hearts in the right place, you just have to make sure his wallet is next time.

Once you get as old as I am you lose any diplomatic skills you may have had.

If folks can't deal with the truth that is their problem.

Definitely tell him, but I'm always amazed by comments like I would never smoke one of these! I've smoked these sticks. I had underestimated the number of sticks I brought to Costa Rica on my last trip there and bought a glass top box at the end of my trip rather than push the hilariously trashy rental car into town for the real article. They smoked fine. Granted, any cigar is better than none at all, but its not like they're poisonous or anything. At least they are likely no more harmful to consume than any other tobacco product we all seek out. My 2 cents.

Agree with others above that you have to tell a friend the truth, kindly.  He’s in the majority, it’s so common, and the products do often look good.  One really has to be into CCs to know, none of us are born with the knowledge.  Good luck 🙂

Shouldn't you tell him while he' still there? Ideally he can go back in the shop and recoup his money. If you wait to tell him you're going to have to lie (which "you are bad at") and act as if you didn't know when he sent you the picture. Good luck

The "shop" is a guy on the beach, most likely.

I originally responded that you should tell him the truth... As luck would have it, a casual friend of mine recently went to Europe and brought back some Trinidad's that he showed me. I could tell they were fake and I told him so despite the fact that he didn't ask me to verify their authenticity. I figured he'd want to know if he wasted $$$ and why I was unwilling to trade him anything of mine for one of his .he didn't necessarily get "angry" but he didn't seem to really appreciate my unsolicited advice. He later said I was being a buzzkill and that if he likes smoking them it really shouldn't matter.  I immediately thought of this post and I have revised my opinion.  If it's a close friend or fellow cc hobbyist that you know is concerned about authenticity, then definitely tell them the truth. Otherwise....no good deed will go unpunished... Just let them enjoy their dutch master siglos and tell them you can't trade with them because you're allergic to trinidaddies.
