Ken Gargett Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 been watching the lord of the rings trilogy again recently. brilliant stuff. got me thinking. which is the best trilogy ever? plenty of options here. for me, it is LotR. pips the Godfather trilogy. i have put in the stars wars for the first three, and it probably would have won but i think that the 3rd one is so much of a lesser film, not to mention so many since. same for pirates - third one is rubbish. rest so abysmal they don't count. matrix, i never could get into. plenty of others. bourne had three good films and then off into whatever makes us money. any others?
99call Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 Haha I love your optimism in imagining a good 99% on here will have seen even one of the three colours. Looking at the list my knee jerk is The Godfather., But the 3rd caught Pacino in his "Hooohaaa" shouty phase. Still enjoy it. But as whole I think lord of the rings might just pip it. 1
JohnS Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 I think the following four films are all outstanding as a trilogy of films, both in regards to box office and critically-speaking... The Dark Knight trilogy (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises) Toy Story trilogy (Toy Story1, 2 and 3...which I consider the best) Indiana Jones ( Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade - many contemporary reviews of Temple of Doom were critical of the child character, Short Round. Retrospective reviews are more favourable.) Back to the Future (Back to the Future I, II and III) Some of my personal favourites, which include some foreign-made and/or world cinema choices and therefore would not be as widely popular, but in my opinion, no less good, are... The Three Colours Trilogy (Three Colours Blue, Three Colours White and Three Colours Red - yes @99call, at least one other member here on FoH values these tremendous films!) The Dollars Film Trilogy (A Fistful of dollars, A Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad and the Ugly) The Apu Trilogy (Pather Panchali, Aparajito and The World of Apu) The Before Trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight) One other comedic trilogy which I love is the Three Flavours Cornetto Film Trilogy which includes Shaun of the Dead (which an homage to zombie films), Hot Fuzz (an homage to cop buddy/action films) and The World's End (an homage to alien films). 2
madandana Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 GF for me. Although I consider number 3 to basically be a parody of the other 2. 1

Haha John, I definitely wasn't having a dig at the films, 2 of the three i've seen were brilliant. Just having a giggle that some on here, would view watching a foreign film with subtitles, a borderline homo-erotic act.............not (of course) that theres anything wrong with that. 54 minutes ago, ayepatz said: The Omen. Popular Post joeypots Posted October 29, 2018 Popular Post Posted October 29, 2018 I think it has to be the Godfather trilogy, even if #3 wasn't up to par. The first two are, imho, about the most perfect movies ever made. Just one example. Marlin Brando, Don Corleone, wiping the dust off of Solazzo's pant leg when he is refusing to support him in the drug business is one of the many small details of extraordinary acting that make the performance one of the greatest in all of cinema. Those little bits of acting only come out of the very best artists and there must be hundreds of them in the two movies. Not that I'm a fan or anything. 5
Scotch&Stogie Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 Lord of the Rings for me as far as greatness across the board, even though I enjoy certain movies from Godfather, Star Wars, and Back to the Future more than certain movies from Lord of the Rings. Im also surprised there’s little love for the Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy. Hot Fuzz and The World’s End are truly brilliant movies. And Shaun of the Dead wasn’t half bad either. 1

Colt45 Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 Tempted to go with the tour de force that is The Hangover trilogy. But I give the edge to The Lord of The Rings. 1
Popular Post Parky Posted October 29, 2018 Popular Post Posted October 29, 2018 Can I be pedantic and say that the Godfather is NOT a trilogy. There are 2 films and 2 films only, they were written and conceived as one film,Godfather 3 is some kind of monstrosity, that we should never talk about. - by the same rational Indiana Jones was a trilogy, because we should just ignore #4. Star Wars 4,5,6. for me, it's almost flawless, written as a distinct narrative, innovative, still enjoy it, even now after 30 years. As an aside Rogue one is the best film in the franchise outside of the original 3. I you don't agree, you're wrong. 5 1
MoeFOH Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 LOTR for me. All three are top shelf movies. I can't say that about any other trilogy. Reduce it to 2 movies, and the Godfather streets them. 1
dobbs Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 (edited) my head says the godfather, but my heart says the “man with no name” trillogy (or “clint’s dollars trillogy). the first two are italian western recreations of japanese samurai movies which were inspired by john ford westerns (!!!), and the third is absolutely brilliant despite a tedious line about a bridge. -dobbs edited to add: voted for the dollars trillogy Edited October 30, 2018 by dobbs clarity

First Lady Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 Love Godfather but than there is Bourne ,Indian Jones and Die Hard... every one of these I will watch over and over .. sorry LOTR does nothing for me
El Presidente Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 Trinity Trilogy. Terence Hill and Bud Spencer. (Mario Girotti and Carlo Pedersol) 2
cigcars Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 *I would have had a gosh-darn hard time deciding if your list consisted of only the first and second films: The Godfather I and II - beyond excellent: Alien and Aliens - what a joy fest! Part 3 for those two - WHAT the HELL!!?? Francis Ford Coppola had rightly lamented his being goaded and no doubt WELL paid to do a part 3 to the Godfather - BLAAAHHHH, YUKKK. Alien 3 - again, WHAT the HELL!!?? WHAT kind of horsecrap was on those peoples' mind??? The Terminator and T2, Judgement Day were Tha BOMB! Tha BEST. But Terminator 3 fell short IMHO because James Cameron was not the director. Good action but the film didn't really HIT you the way Parts I and 2 did. My humble 2cts..

Derboesekoenig Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 Most of those are not true trilogies--meaning 3 movies--and as such, my vote goes towards LOTR.
