vegemite

i know it is one of those things that gets linked to aussies but wondering how many aussies actually like it. my old man used to enjoy a spoonful dissolved in boiling water after fishing in winter but i will confess, i think it is brown sludge that is not fit for cows. and this latest piece of idiocy sums it up. see below. 

wondering how many non-aussies enjoy it, if you've tried it. 

one of the funniest things i have ever seen was when travelling with an old mate and we had an internal flight in spain. he had his tube of vegemite but the woman at security would not let it through. no way was she swallowing some nonsense about it being food. he would travel everywhere with it and always bring it down to breakfast. and yet in other things he is ridiculously fussy. he is in europe at the moment and sending me photos of three star restaurants and bottles of 90 Musigny and so on. yet he loves vegemite (and really bad coffee). makes no sense to me.

he was furious when security rejected it so gave the poor woman a lecture on food in general. that didn't help but it did help to draw a crowd which ended up being about 400. i was screaming for a strip search. after that, he gave another lecture to the poor woman, who was about 30 stone and could have squashed him to death, about the inadequacies of spanish security. this was not helping.

so the highlight was the grand finale, a lecture on spain (it was his first visit). he was unimpressed (actually, he liked it way more than he'd ever concede). as far as i could work out, spain's main failing was that it was not france. 

a man and his vegemite were indeed parted.

Simply dreadful!

Any right-thinking person knows that the only proper ingredient here is Marmite.

I don't mind it on toast with butter or in a "cheddarmite" scroll from the bakery but come to think of it its been a couple of years since ive had vegemite.

Good for a hang-over. Lots of Vitamin B. 4 slices of butter and vegemite toast and a glass of orange juice then hit the couch to watch football until you doze off.

I picked up a bottle to try instead of marmite the other day.

It taste's like they've boiled the flavour out of marmite leaving you with a block of blandness.

In a push I would take it on my toast but I'll take the Marmite any day if available.

 

I also use Marmite in my Gravy, reccomend it.

I tried some with the Aussies in Havana.  Not bad on toast with butter.  I ended up ordering some but it’s been siting in my cupboard untouched. I imagine that it will survive a nuclear attack and I’ll try it agin then.

The restaurant near my place in KL makes Marmite Chicken. It is the same as the dish above. To be honest, though I hate Vegemite and Marmite, when used as a glaze it's quite nice.

Is Bovril allowed to be in the discussion? It's sludgy, brown, and salty as all hell.

Something very romantic about Bovril, you can imagine our grandads in the trenches warming their hands on the beefy stock.  Sadly this is probably just nonsense, they were probably just chain smoking and and inspecting their rotting feet

When I worked in Singapore, it was on the buffet table as a condiment (at hotel) always wondered what the heck it was.  I gave it a go and it's not bad.  Do they sell it in the States?  Never looked for it.  Just as we don't see chicken salt here either.

I used to work with an Aussie woman in the 90's she loved the stuff and would torture us every chance she got.  I always found it to be the veggie equivalent of this stuff

well, when the discussion comes down to what is better - vegemite, marmite and bovril (i thought that was washing powder) - fair to say we have set the bar at a new low. 

 

apparently, apropos of nothing, there was a move to call vegemite 'pakan'. because if Ma might, Pa can. seriously.
