HoyoFan Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 Hey guys, I used to have scotch but the last year I’ve really been enjoying Rum with my cigars. I’ve tried a couple of different ones and so far Diplomatico has been my favorite. I was curious what you all recommend. I like something not too spicy or too crazy floral. Thanks!
stogieluver Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 Neat or mixer? Neat: Diplomatico Reserve Exclusiva is nice. Mixer: Diplomatico Mantuano is very good. Ron Zacapa 23 and XO are also very good. 1 1

Wookie Posted January 17, 2021 Posted January 17, 2021 Zafra 21! Read the reviews. It punches way above its weight class at $46/btl. Fuller, richer, rounder than many other ~20yr rums. 1 1

Popular Post asmazda Posted January 17, 2021 Popular Post Posted January 17, 2021 For a Scotch drinker, I would recommend pretty much any Foursquare. Most other rums I have tried are either too sweet and/or one-dimensional. https://altamarbrands.com/brands/foursquare-rum-distillery/ By the way, I am an avid Scotch drinker. 6 1
Popular Post dominattorney Posted January 17, 2021 Popular Post Posted January 17, 2021 There's this Haitian Rhum Agricole that I've been enjoying recently. Its called clairin sajous. Its pretty grassy on its own, but in a Mai Tai with a shot of a dark rum, I prefer goslings black seal, it balances out the smooth edges nicely and lends a nice tropical cane note to the drink. The nose is overwhelming fresh sugarcane but there are some nice funky notes in there as well from the spontaneous fermentation. As I said, on its own its a bit difficult to enjoy, and its probably not what you are looking for, but in that drink it'll really elevate it. Here's the recipe. One part clairin sajous One part dark rum Juice of half a lime Half part orgeat syrup Half part or less triple sec to taste Stir or shake, but I prefer stirred, and serve with ice. Definitely benefits a bit from dilution from the ice because its otherwise all spirit and the drink itself comes in around 75 or 80 proof when mixed. With a cigar this is great because the sharpness from the lime and cane notes cleanse the palate nicely and there's enough body from the dark rum and high ABV to hold its own. 4 1

No added sweetener or color like most rum. Ken did a review on them once I think. Sent from my SM-N976U using Tapatalk
HoyoFan Posted January 17, 2021 Author Posted January 17, 2021 Thanks fellas! I am actually a fan of the sweetness just not crazy sweet and floral if you know what I mean.

Foursquare makes fantastic rums from the budget to premium options. Their white rum collaboration with Hampden, called Probitas, is our go-to for any rum cocktail. It is perfect for a daiquiri or mojito. I'm enjoying the latter at the moment with a Punch Short de Punch. 2 1
Habana Mike Posted January 17, 2021 Posted January 17, 2021 Pacto Navio, Santiago 11, Ron Caney Centuria. For ones you can possibly find domestically, Plantation (any though I like the Barbados 5 for general use and XO for special occasions), any Foursguare you can find. Ron Zacapa, Zaya and Zafra for your Zs. 2 2
Popular Post Fosgate Posted January 17, 2021 Popular Post Posted January 17, 2021 1. Plantation 20th Annaversary XO 2. Zaya 3. DIpolomatico Reserva Exclusiva 4 1
Kitchen Posted January 17, 2021 Posted January 17, 2021 For a not so breaking the bank option, I am a real fan of Zaya 18 years with a splash of cocoa bitters. In the USA, Ron Zacopa is great. In Havana, 7 Anos and up are my personal favorites. 2 1

steelcity Posted January 17, 2021 Posted January 17, 2021 Lots of my favorites listed. Foursquare 2007 and 2008, Zacapa 23, Diplomatico. I'll add Papas Pilar 24 to this. 1 1
Habana Mike Posted January 17, 2021 Posted January 17, 2021 Pilar has some good rums for sure. On the sweeter side.
dobbs Posted January 17, 2021 Posted January 17, 2021 i'll echo the foursquare recommendations, pretty much anything they make. being a whiskey drinker, i find their 12 year bottlings to be the only rum on-par with fine whiskey. their probitas white rum collaboration with hampden is fantastic as well. that said, i'm not a huge fan of neat liquor with cigars. i really like appleton signature (the cheap one) with ginger ale (not ginger beer) and lime. fantastic with or without cigar. the appleton 12 is pretty good too, and if you're looking for another interesting white rum, casa magdalena is worth checking out. -dobbs 1
Phil S Posted January 17, 2021 Posted January 17, 2021 I also got into rum last summer (not because of Covid...), but the reason was that I tried rhum agricole at a friend‘s and was lost immediately. Just to mention it once: the difference to most other rums, which are made from molasses, is that agricole is made from the initial cane juice - which is basically the same as cachaça from Brazil. You can try any of the older rhums from Neisson, Clément, HSE, Demoiseau... 1

Puros Y Vino Posted January 17, 2021 Posted January 17, 2021 Zacapa XO is excellent. It tastes more like a Cognac than rum. Not very sweet either. I had a bottle of Pacto Navio and killed it quickly. Great on its own or with a cigar. Ron Santiago 11YO is a gem as well El Dorado 12 or 15 too.

HoyoFan Posted January 17, 2021 Author Posted January 17, 2021 This is awesome fellas! Thanks so much for all the recos. Only question now is how many do I buy to start with haha
garbandz Posted January 17, 2021 Posted January 17, 2021 https://therumhowlerblog.com this is a good resource, I tried a few of the top 10 rums here. I finally picked Diplomatico Reserve as my go to rum. Excellent and not too pricey.
