El Presidente Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 I have never had the discipline to use a cigar dossier/journal. I have mates who still love to paste the band in their cigar journal and write their notes. For those that do, hats off to you 2 1
StogieSteve23 Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 I just use a small spiral bound notebook for certain sticks I don't want to forget or unless i'm doing a review here for FOH. Too many cigars smoked on a regular basis to document everything, but its always fun looking back and seeing what you wrote down at one point vs another when smoking the same stick later. 1
Rhinoww Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 I have a spreadsheet w all my purchases, codes, cost, date purchased etc. I keep some general notes on a box after a few sticks to see if my taste aligns w common reviews. But daily journal, no. I barely know when a box is finished. 1
maverickdrinker Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 I keep all my bands and post my reviews on the blog. Fun to smoke a cigar that i smoked previously and then read what I wrote about it afterwards to compare notes. www.thedirtyashes.wordpress.comSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
Habana Mike Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 I did early on. That and keep spreadsheets. Found them too much work that actually detracted from focusing on the cigars.... 2
zigarrenziggy Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 I use an app called Cigar Scanner. It isn't perfect, but they have 98% of the cigars that you'll find. It helps immensely with inventory, and has fields for notes or reviews. I typically throw in something like "PSP/HQ RUB Jul 19" in the notes and then the date for the 90-day mark for quick reference. It works well enough, but I think a journal is nice, too
BoliDan Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 Pretty much what everyone is saying. Sounds like something you would do when just starting and every cigar is exciting. I sometimes post my cigars on the daily thread, but a lot of the time I think taking a picture is too much of a bother. A journal? Cheese n rice, no thank you. 1
Bijan Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 I could see maybe jotting down some one or two word note, to see how a particular box is doing (plugged, loose draw, etc.). But I've done one or two reviews on this site for the review weekends and racking my brain for the detailed descriptions of each flavour in each third all the time would be really tiresome. Can't see doing that every time I have a smoke. I mean subconsciously I'm sure I'm doing it, but I don't need to consciously know if it's nutmeg or cinnamon I'm tasting 1
dominattorney Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 Judges force me to do too much wresting at work. This is supposed to be a distraction, not an obligation for me.
ElLoboLoco Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 I did when I first started but it sucked the fun out of it. Lol
Zaxeiler Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 I do, but only the first time for a stick or box. Now days do it on the go in the notes app. 3
wineguy Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 I have an inventory spreadsheet and that is it. I don't keep the number in the box though, just what it started with and when it goes to the single drawer note that and zero out the count. 1
PaulPower Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 I just pencil notes on the bottom of the box. It’s really easy, quick and convenient, and it gives me an excuse to go rifling through my humidor once in a while. I tried doing spreadsheets, apps, and journals, but that’s what I do for work and I don’t really want to do that with my hobby. Besides, what am I gonna do, make a bar graph? Cigar Surgeon Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 Yeah you could say I use journals: Back in 2012 when I started doing reviews, it was really only as a method of remembering what I had smoked, and whether I liked it or not. I found that writing it down seemed to anchor the experience, versus typing it into a computer which I immediately forgot. 1 1
PaulPower Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 Can anyone recommend a good journal? Maybe I’ll give this another go. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

CaptainQuintero Posted August 23, 2020 Posted August 23, 2020 Half a dozen little black books, if I smoke a cigar for the first time it gets a little review that goes in, if there's a drastic change from an experience in the future then I'll do an update on the page. Probably the best thing I did when I first 'got' cigars. Nothing digital though, but I take my time and grab a fountain pen. In my head I'm making a little diary like Indiana Jones Sr in The Last Crusade 1

CountingStogies Posted August 23, 2020 Posted August 23, 2020 When I first started, I made my notes in a nice journal. I still enjoy pulling it out and seeing what I was excited about back then. Lots of NC struggles until I figured out what I liked from a cigar. Being an accountant by trade, I now keep my notes in Excel. But I like to have things organized and I only jot notes down for a cigar which is a standout. The average or below-par smokes don't make it in there. And I use it as a reference for future buying, usually figuring out if something is box worthy or just get a couple of singles.
Connoisseur Kim Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 I wrote my CC reviews on FOH and CCW. I also keep them on Google Docs for backup and draft.
Cigar Salute Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 As odd as it sounds.... I've logged roughly 80-90% of the cigars I've smoked since the end of 2014 on Instagram. I never had a desire to post endless selfies, but the thought of having a shareable photo record and notes regarding the cigars I smoke available to me anytime, anywhere was & is appealing to me. I enjoy occasionally going through the photos, and seeing how my tastes have changed over the last few years. It's also interesting to me to see how Habanos gradually occupied more and more of my smoking rotation, until you'd be hard-pressed to find anything but CC in the lineups. Always fun to see a photo of a fantastic cigar smoked, and remember that day. It's also enabled me to meet & forge friendships with quite a few fellow enthusiasts, and I've gotten some fantastic recommendations via fellow users from all over the place. I know there's alot of hot garbage on that site, but there's ALOT of folks there who appreciate cigar tasting notes, as well as photos of cigars. If one is too anti-social for those kinds of activities, they can always create a private profile and not add anyone to it! 1
Hammer Smokin' Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 i love reading cigar reviews. they read like fiction, with artistic descriptions of what is essentially tobacco. I read them out of entertainment value. But alas I'm not a writer. "tastes good", "didn't taste good", "poor burn", "wrapper made of titanium" only goes so far.
