The cape is such an interesting rec.  my wife and son love it.  Her mom is from Orleans and they still have a place out there.  They all love it but for me it’s just “fine.”   But I really love hearing why people love it so maybe one day I will love it as much as my family.

Man, there are so many options. I'd say a good one, especially if traveling from Australia, is:

1. San Francisco
2. Drive up the coast highway to Mendocino, to the Oregon border, etc.

That's time in a great city, and time on a beautiful stretch of coastline that is off the beaten path depending on the time of year. Summer would be much more crowded.

as an outsider but someone who lived there for a while, granted a long time ago, there is so much to love. same as most countries. 

strange as it might seem these days, i absolutely loved DC. it was a brilliant city. 

new york is one of a kind. i went to LA numerous times for work and must say that it won't bother me if i never see it again. but san fran, san diego, boston, seattle, etc were great fun. never made florida so can't comment but it all seemed a bit like qld in many respects. 

but there was so much more to the states. i would feel very sorry if i honestly believed someone thought that the rest of the place was a pass. that seems an incredibly myopic view of the world.

If I was nailed down and had to choose only one city I would have say New York City. 

Off the beaten path, my personal favorite is the temperate rain forest area south of or directly west of Seattle. In general I think the national parks around the US are spectacular, although I have not been to nearly enough of them.

Olympic National Park—a bit of a drive From Seattle, but worth the effort just for the Elwha area and Hall of Mosses.

North Cascades and Mount Rainier aren’t bad either.

Kidding. I'm kidding. Truly a gorgeous place. Clean air. You can drink the water from the tap and it tastes like filtered water. Our group stayed at Lone Mountain Ranch. I told my wife... We're lucky to be able to enjoy this stuff. Some people will never look at scenes like this. We did dog sledding, and I still get goosebumps remembering the imagery. The mountain was gorgeous as well. (Please take with a grain of salt, we're not seasoned skiers, but we've been to a bunch of mountains on the a East Coast.) The food was outstanding! We're thinking of revisiting with our grown kids next year. 

I wouldn't want a bunch of outsiders messing up my peaceful Montana either if I were you. In NJ... And particularly down the Jersey shore they call those people "Bennies". Locals hate Bennies cause they have a knack for ruining things. Urban dictionary Benny for elaborate definition. I wish I wouldn't have had such a prepared weekend or we would've been able to go for a smoke. Cheers Mark!

Been on my bucket list forever to see Yellowstone. Have a trip booked 1rst week of May. Staying Jackson Hole and Mammoth Hot Springs. Hope plans do not get messed up with the C-Virus .

I've got to toss another vote in the hat for New Orleans.  The 7th ward is a magical place... really though, most of the non-tourist-trap corners of the city have a lot to offer.  By all means, send them by the French quarter, but advise against spending too much time there... And if they are planning to rent a car they could always road-trip it down to the outskirts of Austin afterwards for some nice hiking (or up to Tunica, MS--the Vegas of the deep south ?)

If it were me, and I was going to tell a person from outside the US, who was coming here for *7 days*, and they could bop around a bit, I'd tell them 3 days NYC, 2 days NoLa, 2 days Vegas. You will see the fat, ugly, happy America. And you'll probably have a great time.

Of course, you could instead come to California and spend however much time you like. LA beaches (you can skip San Diego -- it's just LA without the fun) and Hollywood and the best food scene on Earth; San Francisco is just great to hang in; you could do Napa if you're into wine; Big Sur is... as spectacular as the Amalfi Coast and about 1/100 as crowded. Then there are the parks... Yosemite? Defies belief that a place can be so wild and beautiful and monumental. It is the crown Jewel of America's national park system. If you could only see one, see this one. Grand Canyon is #2.

 

Or, yeah... you could spend 7 days in New Orleans. Not in summer...

Off the path or small cities with interesting nature at the door step: Sedona; Asheville and surrounding national forest/parks; Seattle and surrounding national forest/parks; Jackson Hole and surrounding national forest/parks; the bourbon trail in Kentucky, and New Orleans but NEVER in summer.
