A newbie to the US is visiting, just for one week, and asks for your best recommendation to split the time between:

1. Best City

2. Best Off-The-Beaten-Track Spot

What would your answers be?

I’ve seen plenty that has raised my eyebrows on the FoH forum, this one takes the cake.

as an outsider but someone who lived there for a while, granted a long time ago, there is so much to love. same as most countries.  strange as it might seem these days, i absolutely loved DC. it

I'll take Big Sky over LA 101 out of 100 times. No debate.

When r they visiting .... this makes a big difference here in the us on what areas to go ...

Best city is New Orleans. The only risk is that a visitor might accidentally find the real New Orleans - the old, weird one - and never leave. It happens regularly.

For a summer visit the best city is Chicago, of course we Chicagoans will probably agree. Weather, golf, food, the lake, nightlife, music, theater, people, etc. all great.

Off the beaten path, Saratoga and Lake George in New York is awesome if they're  here when the horses are running in mid July to end of August.

I grew up in Chicago and love it, but summer is the last time I'd want to visit.  Too hot and humid most of the time.

I agree seasonality is a big consideration, but so are personal interests.  Having to pick a single "best" city or hidden spot without that knowledge is really tough.  Portland is great in some respects, San Francisco in other, Chicago and Boston in others.  And yeah, NYC has a ton to offer a first-time US visitor.

As for off the beaten track...  Lassen NP in northern CA if it's a hiker/outdoorsy person.  Gorgeous scenery and a fraction of the crowds at the more famous national parks.  New Mexico is a fantastic place - food is unreal, beautiful landscapes, lots of historical and cultural interest (and even a couple of good cities).

Undecided at this point. Just give us your best options assuming the best seasonal conditions are in place. ?

Best spot would be Las Vegas, best off the beaten path would be Austin  Texas

Colorado Springs. Not a huge city, but has all the amenities. Great restaurants and a nice art scene. 15 minutes from breathtaking views and hikes and only 30 minutes from the heart of pikes national forest. Come back and enjoy a 5 star meal and some awesome beers made locally. Cannot beat it between june and mid september for a visit.

Best city should be New York City...  It's New York after all.  Not that I would want to live there, but it's certainly a site to see if a visitor.  NYC has got it all.   I also like the Las Vegas recommendation that @Astar20 mentioned.

Off the beaten path would be Provincetown, MA in the summer.  Definitely something quite different than most are use to seeing.  Beautiful and not for the prude.

This is really a tough question given the limited amount we know about this person or persons....and time they will come but...

Vegas is fun but a big amusement park for adults not really the us just a total party seems like we all have a spot like this, i do enjoy it though

New Orleans is great fun again kinda like vegas but dirtier

Miami is fun but really expensive and very touristy

New York might be my pick so much to do soo many people etc. they have it all but very very very busy if they don't do well with crowds this isn't the spot

Chicago is fun and is a big city with small city feel

Nashville pretty hot spot and Memphis blues bbq and elvis is  great as well

Scottsdale/Phoenix are nice and relaxing lots of transplants there for the weather

Wash DC and Fairfax county are pretty american as well

Then there is Cali, san fran, la, san diego beverly hills, hollywood and on and on

I  would say Santa Monica and Carmel would be my two off the beaten track spots both very interesting, Carmel for its beauty and Santa Monica for people watching.

It's never ending with so much to do here these are just a few off the top of my head

Best City: Austin, TX - great weather, phenomenal food, tons of culture, a capitol city, and year round there is always something to do

Best Off the Beaten Path - from Austin go to Driftwood, TX. The Salt Lick BBQ, well worth your time. Then keep going down the highway to Fredericksburg, TX. You won't be disappointed.

Mmmmmmm, Salt Lick.  I'm seeing those hot links hanging over the fire right now.  I've got a very good friend in Austin that sends their sauce to us every year.  Love that place!

I live in Los Angeles and I love it.  But I acknowledge it can be a bit recalcitrant for a visitor without a guide.  That said, you are generally within an hour of hiking, an hour of beaches, and there are good places to eat and cultural events galore.

Ive been to Asheville, NC  a lot lately and I like it for almost the same reasons although it’s smaller.

So subjective. But if the person is interested in nature and relief from people, the answer is Montana in the late spring early summer - before wildfire season.

There are two national parks to visit, and endless outdoor activities off the beaten path.

There are several historic sites that shaped the “west”... and a stop in historic Butte is a must with a mine tour and bouncing to a few old bars in uptown the smart play.

If the person is more interested in the hustle of the city, you can’t beat New York. Chicago second. Unlimited options for city life.

If the person is looking for nightlife... as mentioned previously, you will not beat New Orleans. It is a different vibe than any other place. Las Vegas is of course meant for sensory overload. Great place to spend a weekend if you’re into that sort of thing.

It use to be that Seattle And San Fransisco were super cool west coast city to visit - unfortunately bad policies have left both as crap holes... literally.

Two cents.

1. Chicago in summer

2. Nashville or Austin

(New Orleans was fun when I was in my 20s.  Now I think it is gross and dirty.)

For someone who has never visited the US:

1. Chicago

2. Washington, D.C.

3. Somewhere in Texas (Houston, Dallas, or Austin)

4. New York City

Best city is a bit subjective. Scottsdale/Phoenix are nice but not a summer location. Winter there is basically summer for most people and lots to do. Having said that, D.C and New York probably need to be near the top.

Off the beaten path, Jackson Hole Wyo! Just down the road from Yellowstone and an absolutely amazing area in the Teton Valley

My 1st cousins use to live like 20 min (still Austin) drive from that Salt Lick in Driftwood.  I use to love driving there.  Been there a million times...

I use to work in OKC every week and the airport has a Salt Lick.  I use to bring home pre-cooked Briskets shrink wrapped ready to heat.  Was pretty inexpensive too!

If you’ve never been to the US it’s gotta be NYC. Just too much to see and experience.

For unique, it’s gotta be NM/AZ/CO/UT for the Old West experience and landscape.

Yo Brighton as a Cape Cod native I have to chime in, PTown is loads of fun, you’ve got your choice of over a dozen restaurants with waterfront sunset views of the harbor, art galleries up the wazoo (do not use this phrase while in PTown if ou don’t want to be misinterpreted).

The whole Lower Cape is still a delightful trip if you enjoy nature, quiet, beaches, and getting absolutely shithoused to a local band at the Beachcomber while having some oysters.

I would steer clear of Texas and the Southeast.

New Orleans would be the Southern city I recommend.

New York City of course.

LA is great if you have a guide.

SF is very nice if you don't mind San Franciscans.

Vegas, baby!

The rest of the US is a pass.
