I like cigars but holy crap.... Buy 2 Bugatti veyrons or this thing... Or a giant mansion the list goes on. 

abanos auction history has been made. The final lot auctioned at the Habanos Festival gala on Friday night broke all records with a 2.4 million euro ($2.6 million) bid for a 5-foot tall cabinet humidor filled with 550 Cuban Cohiba cigars. The bid stunned the crowd and surpassed all previous records for the auction by an enormous margin. 

The bid—made by Li Thet from China—brought cheers from the crowd of more than 1,200 cigar smokers and pushed the total raised for the night to 4.3 million euros ($4.7 million). By comparison, last year’s auction raised just over $1.7 million. 

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Max Gutmann, the importer of Cuban cigars to Mexico who has also been to every Habanos Festival auction.

“It’s a record,” said a smiling Fernando Domínguez, premium cigar director of Imperial Brands, the British company that owns half of Cuba’s Habanos S.A.

The humidor, one of six lots auctioned on Friday night, was made in Cuba by the Unión Humidores group and is packed with Cohibas of all shapes and sizes. The drawers on both sides of the humidor are filled with 550 cigars, including several rarities such as: 40 Cohiba Behikes (in 52 and 54 ring gauge), 20 Esplendidos, 30 Majestuosos (celebratory smokes for Cohiba’s 50th anniversary), 50 Talismán, 50 Sublimes Extra, 20 Pirámides, 20 Gran Coronas, 20 Robusto Especiales, 20 Robusto Supremos, 20 Cohiba 1966 and 50 Novedosos.

The auction was one of the final moments at the 22nd annual Habanos Festival.

I think proceeds go to Cuban health care system, so it's a nice donation to people who need it.

It is very awesome and the cigars are nice. Id prefer to buy a beach house though. Im sure the guy who bought it already has 10 of those though.

I read that article last night and couldn’t wrap my head around how ridiculous that was.

Great, and not bizarre at all. If you’re a billionaire 2.4 mill is a nice donation to a children’s hospital, and — ooops, at the same time you get a rather large box of cigars? - I’d do it any day?

This is for a great cause... Cuba's healthcare if I am not mistaken. At least this billionaire gets something for his charitable donation. I am not sure if it's a tax write off, but who cares. His name is forever embedded into cuban culture and he has one bad ars box of goodies! Hopefully they name a hospital after him.

And kudos for SA Habanos for commissioning modern looking boxes this year. This is the reason all other auctions pale in comparison. These are actual usable humidors that these millionaires can proudly display in the east wing of their mansions. Humidors of past auctions seem very rustic, which is cool, but it's obvious what these whales want.

Strange, they only show that one picture of it.  Not even a great angle.  Plus, I would love to be able to see the cigars.

2.6$Mio for 550 cigars. That’s a nice lump sum. 4.250$ per stick plus a nice humidor. Piece of cake, you all should see my champagne ? bill. Just saying. 
 

Hopefully he is going to pay the bill.
 

I am quite happy when the money goes into the healthcare. Last year they raised 1.7$Mio this year 4.7$Mio.

Again.......it has absolutely nothing to do with the amount of money spent.  It is ALL about the prestige of owning something only one person in the entire world has.

Very hard to wrap your head around for most but it is what it is.  Call it what you want...Crazy rich Asians or Rich crazy Asians, but that's the facts.

And hopefully the money does go to its intended named purpose.
