Habana Mike Posted March 14, 2020 Posted March 14, 2020 Nice necro-thread! Cats are smart enough to have staff vs. dogs having owners. That said, my dog does listen to me more than my cat. Not necessarily a sign of higher intelligence, me it seems dogs are intelligent enough. Cats feel superior to us!
Chibearsv Posted March 14, 2020 Posted March 14, 2020 The German Shepherds we had when I were a kid was brilliant so I'd say dog. But the cat I had when I lived in an apartment was amazing, never taught her anything and didn't need to teach her anything, so I'd say cat. Then we got a Shiba Inu....I swear she was half dog, half cat. Cunning, stubborn, independent like a cat and loyal, protective, affectionate like a dog. Almost too damn smart to be a pet. 2
Popular Post Edward7 Posted March 16, 2020 Popular Post Posted March 16, 2020 I think dogs are smarter. However, even dumb shit dogs which are the majority, fool people into thinking they are smart because dogs have emotional intelligence that humans respond to. Dogs can exhibit happiness, shame, sadness, anger, etc. in a way that we understand. They probably communicate on more channels with us. On top of that, a dog’s innate drive to please and obey also helps us train them to be actual working service animals whether it’s a seeing eye dog, bomb/drug sniffing dog, a dog to assist the blind or seizure prone etc. Id like to see someone train a cat to be anything more than a prick Cats are most dog like when they crave affection but these creatures are selfish as hell. They are capable hunters (most of the time) and they are cunning and quick and a bit sinister. I’ve never actually seen a cat do anything remotely intelligent. Knowing how to get at food or killing prey does not equate to intelligence to me, the same way that you’re not going to convince me that a shark is a lot smarter than the dumb killing machine we know them to be. I’ve got a 2 year old husky and a 1 year old tuxedo cat and I love them both but I’d be more torn to lose my dog. 8
scap99 Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 Ken said it already, but it's been almost 3 years... My dogs can spell too. They know how to spell h-u-n-g-r-y and t-r-e-a-t
Vetteman Posted March 17, 2020 Posted March 17, 2020 A German Shepherd, Doberman and a cat have died. All three are faced with God who wants to know what they believe in.The German shepherd says: "I believe in discipline training and loyalty to my master.""Good," says God. "Then sit down on my right side. Doberman, what do you believe in?"The Doberman answers: "I believe in the love, care and protection of my master."Ah," said God. "You may sit to my left."Then he looks at the cat and asks, "And what do you believe in?"The cat answers: "I believe you're sitting in my seat."
dunhamrocco Posted July 15, 2021 Posted July 15, 2021 I like both equally but whether a cat or dog is best for someone depends on what type of pet owner that person is. I have brazilian shorthair cat ( https://fello.pet/en/cat-breeds/brazilian-shorthair/ ) and it is awesome.
djrey Posted July 15, 2021 Posted July 15, 2021 I have lived with both all my life and love both equally. Anyone who answers one way or the other has not spent enough time with the other breed. Dogs are far more domesticated than cats and show emotions that we understand easily. We can teach them to do amazing things. Impressive capacity no doubt but if I could get a human to roll over at the sight of a treat I'd call them stupid. Cats are born with all their talents. From birth they require very little instruction from their mothers on how to survive. Take a cat and throw it outside. It will be able to hunt, find water and shelter and will survive. Wild cats are everywhere. Take a dog and throw it outside and its dead in a week. Cat wins in this scenario hands down. Having the skills to keep yourself alive is the ultimate intelligence no? End of the day both are awesome. People need to stop comparing an axe to a scalpel. Different tools for different jobs. 1
Fuzz Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 "El perro, el perro, es mi corazón, El gato, el gato, el gato no es bueno." 2
NSXCIGAR Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 I believe the science says they are of about equal intelligence, but I think cats might be sandbagging...
Walter19 Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 100% dogs. I don't see cats working with the first responders, military or in hospital/school settings.... 1
Greenhorn2 Posted July 17, 2021 Posted July 17, 2021 In my experience I would have to say dog. When my mountain fiest was about 6 months old, the wife said " you need to get a ball and teach her how to fetch." The dog went straight to my entertainment center, grabbed a baseball off the bottom shelf, brought it to me and dropped it at my feet. Never played ball in her life. Never seen a cat do that.
Ryan Posted July 17, 2021 Posted July 17, 2021 I don't mind cats but I don't like the idea of them in cities. My neighbour got a cat a couple years ago. It's out at night, often in my back garden. Within weeks of the cat arriving, more than 90% of the wild birds in the garden are gone. Regarding which is more intelligent, they are different species and have different qualities that can be described as intelligence, so the argument is pointless. It makes as much sense as arguing which of them, cats or dogs, is better looking. 1

That’s because cats don’t give a shit and won’t work for free. Their smart enough to do it but they are also smart enough not to... 1 1
Ken Gargett Posted July 17, 2021 Author Posted July 17, 2021 don't think i have mentioned this before. we had an aussie terrier who learnt the word 'bath'. heard it in any sentence and it would bolt and hide. so we started spelling it 'b-a-t-h'. the dog learnt that as well. fabulous dog. took out at least five brown snakes before sadly it got a bit old and one got it.
mprach024 Posted July 18, 2021 Posted July 18, 2021 What kind of dog? Pretty sure most fish species are smarter than my dogs.
