I'm sure that @JohnS agrees with me on this... The Beatles version of "Twist and Shout"

I very much do. And we both know which version they used in 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'!

johnny cash "hurt" cover Nine inch nails comes to mind

VERSUS

Disturbed - "The Sound Of Silence"  Makes the original seem a bit dated.  And one would never know the range of David Draiman's voice on their other stuff. Simon and Garfunkel

Trisha Yearwood's version of "How Do I Live". I personally think Trisha's version is more soulful.

Dirty old town.
The original came out in 1956 I think, but the Pogues version from 1985 is so different with attitude & balls.

It's about a northern English town of Salford.

DLR's Van Halen most covers are better than the original, and GnR's "Live and Let Die" is fantastic.

Slow Dancing: U2's version is better than Willie Nelson's... imo

The Man Who Sold the World: Bowie's version was good.  Nirvana's was simply great.

Live and Let Die: I prefer G&R's cover to Sir Paul's original.

I think most of the great covers of Chuck Berry's songs were better than his. Roll Over Beethoven by the Beatles and Carol by the Stones come to mind.

The Grateful Dead's cover of The Everly Brothers' Not Fade away and Moving Down The Road Feeling Bad Is right up there for me.

Not Fade Away is a Buddy Holly song. It was also the Rolling Stones first single in the US in 1964.  But I do like the choice!  The Dead actually covered a few songs already named in this thread like All Along the Watchtower and Dancing in the Streets

I would say SRVs version of Voodoo Chile is another, and it's tough to top Jimi

  • Judas Priest "Diamonds & Rust" originally by Joan Baez is an epic folk to metal transformation.
  • Van Halen "You Really Got Me"
  • Jimi's "All Along the Watchtower".

So many more.... but these stand out to me.

Sad to say, but literally almost any Bob Dylan song.  Take for example, All Along the Watchtower--way better by Jimi Hendrix.  (a brief aside, I think Stevie Ray Vaughan's cover of Little Wing beats Hendrix' original).  Continuing with Mr. Dylan, The Grateful Dead crush Desolation Row and Stuck Inside of Mobile, and the Jerry Garcia Band destroy When I Paint My Masterpiece.  The Dylan songs are great in themselves, but I always thought damn near everyone who covered them did a better job.

Fair enough. I think some of the covers on Skull and Roses are the best ever . The version of Johnny B Good is my all time favorite recording of that standard. Your taste may differ.

Haggards Mama Tried aint too shabby either.

This one’s arguable I’m sure, but the Pat Travers version flat out rocks!

Limp Bizkit  "Faith"  over George Michaels any day!

And Phil Collins   "Can't Hurry Love"  over Diana Ross.   And I don't particularly like Phil Collins, so I guess that's saying something for his version.

Superstar by Sonic Youth is far superior, for me, to the Delaney and Bonnie version (and the more famous Carpenters version).

Are You Experienced by Belly I always found better than the original (although mostly because I saw it live a few times and not Hendrix).

Loads more where I prefer the cover version and genuinely think they are better than the original. These two stand out though.

Sturgill Simpson's cover of The Promise by When in Rome. It's like a whole different song.

1) Napalm Death's live cover of the Dead Kennedy's Nazi Punks F-ck Off is incredible. However, you do have to know the original to be able to truly appreciate what they do with the song.
2) Devo's cover of the Stones' Satisfaction - made it their own.
3) Motörhead did a great version of Sympathy for the Devil which was the last track on their Bad Magic album, which sort of makes it the last Lemmy track ever. Still miss him...
