If I had the chance? The following movies are the ones I always return to, at least on an annual basis:

  • 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
  • Casablanca
  • The Big Lebowski
  • Fight Club

One could argue that there are better films to watch, based on personal taste, but these are my ones that represent great value for repeat viewing.

Certainly with you on G, B & U. If I see it on one the classic movie channels and have the time I will watch it. That goes for his other Spaghetti Westerns. Animal House is another I can always watch.

martian is a cracking movie.

saw Papillon the other day, first time in years. terrific film and book.

bridge on the river kwai, so many times.

same with good, bad and ugly. and Casablanca. maltese falcon when i can.

animal house and blues brothers. any of the 007 movies.

sorry john, but i have tried with 2001. bores the crap out of me.

love the godfather, 1 and 2.

can watch the usual suspects every year.

some of the marvels if not wanting to think, but they have more misses than hits.

LA Confidential. ET. Jaws. a heap of the Hitchcock films. Goodfellas. first Jurassic Park was a cracker, if a touch dated. Shawshank redemption.

i'm coming to think that they made two great Star Wars movies and then dropped the ball badly and lived on the rep of the first two. the rest are bog average.

what i can watch, time after time, is pretty much any of the films of Hayao Miyazaki. man is a genius. spirited away and many more.

lord of the rings trio.

Indiana jones 1 and 3.

first couple of terminators.

those should cover a good few rainy sunday arvos.

Those are all great movies, i would add Carlito's way, The departed, Once upon a Time in the west (my favorite Sergio Leone though it's almost a tie with The Good the Bad and the ugly),and i agree with you Ken, any Miyazaki (those of you who haven't seen Grave of the fireflies-not Miyazaki but still Ghibli studio-should consider putting it on their list, not really suitable for children imho)...

The green mile, the silence of the lambs, Unforgiven and the list could go on and on and on....

If i want a laugh i would go for Airplane, Groundhog day, the first two Naked guns....

Just started The Gentlemen on Netflix - hoping to revisit Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels & Snatch. Might try revisit Memento as well the next time I get a weekend to myself.

When I think vintage I have to go back a bit further and The Night of the Hunter always jumps to the front.

Love this scene. One of my favourite in all movies.

Oh yea, Sunday afternoon, a cigar, a movie, and a nice dinner.

The Godfather

The David Lean films mentioned, Laurence, Kwai, Zhivago. Three of the greatest movies ever made.

Unforgiven

Blade Runner

The apartment, Double Indemnity, Sunset Blvd, Stalag 17. Lots of Billy Wilder movies fit the definition of all time classics.

One that’s not so old.  Open Range with Costner, Duvall, and Annette Bening. This is a great western with one of the best gunfights ever filmed. No Kidding. Well worth a watch.

Although not vintage I am surprised not to see The Dark Knight yet! That is one of my top movies ever. Ya’ll have mentioned some incredible films. I might add two more I find myself rewatching. Both stellar Jeff Bridges performances. True Grit and Hell or High Water.

plenty of cracking films mentioned since my list.

what about adding Key Largo!

i don't think anyone has included a John Wayne film - shame on us all. Rio Grande, Horse Soldiers, Hatari, Searchers, El Dorado, Man who shot Liberty Valance, Red River, Rio Bravo, Commancheros, Sons of Katie Elder, Chisum. so many more.

Silverado which game out in 1985 is a true classic. As for a good John Wayne movie I’d have to go with Rooster Cogburn.

Oddly enough I was scrolling down to post a John Wayne - Flying Leathernecks tonight. In the mood for more WW2 air films after finishing Masters of the Air.

Memphis Belle is the best WW2 Bomber movie. So very good!

Masters of the Air is a disappointment - at least in comparison to The Pacific and Band of Brothers.
