Do you find there is never a great enough event to smoke your most cherished cigars or wine? Coming up with an excuse like,

After first born - "Maybe next time"

First million dollar check - "I don't know"

Cancer free - "Only a few left in the box"

Why do we have such hesitations?  Do we really think there will be bigger event we're waiting on?

Only to end up dying unexpectedly, and your wife/children have a cigar collection to figure out how to deal with! It has certainly happened with some members here on the forum. I say enjoy while you are alive, tomorrow is not guaranteed to anyone!

I must confess (and it's not a criticism). I do find it really alien, that a lot of Americans on the forum seem to be obsessed with anniversary boxes, baby boxes, graduation boxes, promotion boxes. For a country that sort of likes to promote itself as super macho and stoic, there appears to be a lot of sentimentality, and self-back patting going on.

Again is not a criticism, I think it's good to celebrate and mark occasions. The UK, is a strange place, if anyone got wind you were treating yourself for some sort of occasion, there would be lots of derision flying around. i.e. "Jesus Christ!!!...check out billy big bollocks over here!!...are you going to buy yourself a solid gold toilet while you're at it?".

I'm fully able to enjoy buying stuff for other peoples special occasions in my life, but yes, congratulating yourself in the UK is considered pretty strange.

I don't think my "First million dollar check" box will ever get smoked. I'll be up in flames before they are.

As a Canadian looking in. I have the same observation. Americans do tend to be sentimental and emotional.  And it reflects in their entertainment. Their reality TV shows are chock full of drama, crying, arguing, making up, rinse repeat.  A good example I find is Kitchen Nightmares. In the US based show, Gordon Ramsey has to deal with crying and whining from participants. Lots of shouting, drama, and cliffhangers. In the UK based version. It's totally different. There's arguing, but it's straight to the point, he doesn't have to get beet red shouting at people. If anything, the Brits in that version of the show, let him have it in their oh so, British ways. :)

But, to the point at hand. I have cigars set aside for milestones but have found myself to be indulging in my more rare/exotic sticks more often. As @SCgarman  notes. Smoke 'em while you can. Reward yourself with a nice stick over a regular one now and then.  :)

Then why not smoke the Cohibas first and then work your way down? Why save for the future? Live glandular and spontaneous. We don't. We have to plan in both our professional and personal beings.

Because Cohibas hit the stratosphere for some of us and we only have so many left? 😂😂

Like Rob said " I'm not the target market" and I'm fine with that. Same reason I will never own a $250,000 watch. I can afford a lot of things but that doesn't mean I would spend cash for them.

Otherwise Carpe Diem!!!!! 😀

One has to age Cohibas at least 5-7 years! Doesn't explain why I'm not burning through my older ones... 🤔

Hence we have to decide which occasion or event is suitable to smoke the few Cohibas we left.

Not every weekend is the '71 Monfortino. Chianti can suffice.

Probably different reasons for different people, but they might include:

  • The Adult Irony - having been a responsible adult and practised deferred gratification for so long, you've forgotten how to get to the point where the gratification is due

Damn, I need glasses. I read that as "Adultery". 🤦‍♂️

@SirVantes or all three you mentioned at once.

And here I was thinking I’m the only one 😄

And btw I don’t have any ‘71 Monfortino but I do have a solitary ‘71 Bartolo Mascarello and yes multiple milestones have come and gone and it’s still waiting for “the right occasion”.

I think a male chastity belt might be more pressing (pardon the pun).

I'm the youngest of the family and I'll be 59 next week. My daughter is 22 and unless she gets married and/or has children, milestone/s will be few and far between. I should definitely not wait.

After the stupid price increases I smoke my best cigars out of spite.

I don't look at them anymore in a "holy grail" light. Now I look at them with disdain that somehow, someway, someone figured these are worth what they are (they aren't).

Every day I’m alive is a special occasion. Sure, I’ll smoke a Cohiba on my birthday or whatever occasion arises but I’m inclined to smoke what I have in the order they were brought. I think that smoking fewer cigars, about 2 a week, makes every cigar an event. I say “maybe later” less as I get older about a lot of things.

Not anymore. I used to. Now I smoke/drink what I want when I want.

Every day, the cigars talk to me and let me know which one is going down. Quality and rarity don't really factor into it for me either. I do have quite a few that won't be touched for a while since I'm putting some age on them, but once a box is broken into, they are free game. The only one I've got pegged for a celebration has to do with a certain Viking victory, or a woman being elected Pope. I think if any FOH MOY is elected Pope, that may qualify as well 😁

The odds are the same on all three eventualities.

If your bottle is sound, you are in for a treat. Had this right before COVID and the best glass was the last, a few hours after being opened and into a decanter.

I am the sentimental American I suppose. I have fun drinking/giving birthyear things to folks - and it helps me intentionally age things as most are FIFO.

I save nothing. Much to my dismay. I do not age because I smoke them almost as fast as I get them. The price is a bit steep but I do believe I am worth it!

Time and time again, I am reminded that the best things are shared with others. An amazing bottle of wine alone and all to myself isn’t nearly as enjoyable as 1/4 of that same bottle shared amongst friends.

Doing this exact thing tomorrow. @Elpresidente can we use the ZoomRoom?😬
