I am not sure why I get these

I am just kicking it to you guys

members here have far more experience on how splits are handled than I do.

"this is the fourth split that we have done and I get that he is bringing in the cigars from his travels but I have noticed that almost half of the cigars from the splits have terrible tight draws or very underfilled. I raised it with him and he says his are fine. It dawned on me that either he is lying, he is picking the best cigars for himself or I am one very unlucky person. He is also my brotherinlaw. Rob could this hit rate even be possible with 21/22 cigars?  Ideas on how to handle it?"

Stop splitting with him?

That was the first thing that came to mind :D

But fair question.

You split a box with two mates.

I would leave the crappiest cigars for myself and have no problem doing so. But how are splits normally done? Equal share of the good bad and the ugly or first  12 out of the box? or something else?

I’ve yet to do a split, but I would just pull the first X number of cigars out of the box and let luck handle the rest.

For office gifts splitting, I label the gifts with numbers and use an app called Randomizer, essentially a random number generator, so it's fair.

In OP's case, tell your sister to divorce the guy.

When I did the Christmas Split last year, I had my wife select the cigars for each bundle with one specific instruction. Put the worst looking cigars in my bundle. I removed myself from the equation entirely. When I do the splits on my own, if I make a point to look through the entire box or something then I typically split the worst ones evenly. Often times it’s the 12 on the top or bottom and off they go with no rhyme or reason.

This was my first thought. There are other options out there.

Whenever I've "hosted" a split, I just grab the cigars as they're boxed and split them up. No cherry picking for me or anyone else. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. I participated in a PLPC split and got 5 tent pegs, I also participated in an RyJ Churchill split and got 5 phenomenal cigars. Sometimes its just the luck of the draw.

The times I've done splits with folks which isn't very often I either take the worst in the group for myself, or just grab the first 12 cigars 10 or whatever the split number is and that's what I get regardless of condition or look. If I was in a situation where I even had to think about questioning the integrity of the person splitting I wouldn't be involved in a split.

This is how I would do it.   If I saw one that looked particularly bad I would leave it for me though.

Is this more about cigars or the relationship with the brother in law?  Sometimes maintaining a relationship is worth taking the L (on occasion).

Then again, Ive never done a split - my family has crap taste in cigars so I just gift them when we smoke.

When I do a box split, I randomly split the cigars. If there were 3 people in the split, and 3 damaged cigars, each person would get one damaged cigar with the worst one taken by myself. If there was only 1 or 2 damaged cigars, I'd take them myself.

The last time was a 3 box split amongst 7 people. Each box was split as evenly as possible, with the remaining cigars randomly split again. Everyone got 3 cigars from each box, then randomly distributed the next 7 cigars. The remaining 5 cigars were gifted to friend of the group who has been out of the cigar community for a while.

If I split with a friend, family member, or stranger, I will take the cracked ones/ or tell them the situation and take the majority of the shitty ones. Sounds like you either have high humidity or a terrible split partner.

4 splits and he is getting hosed every time?  Either his storage of the cigars is off…. Or The Sister got all the brains in the family

Used to do 25 box splits with two others. To make it fair , we'd crack up the box together. One guy would take the first 8. The other the next 8. And I would keep the remaining 8.

Done a few box splits. I'd randomly grab each set, unless there was foot damage then I'd take those with the consideration splits get worse with handle/travel so I'd just smoke those sooner. Never heard complaints.

That's what I'm thinking. He's playing a game he can't win. Fool me once...

Being a brother in law I'd say it's not worth upturning the apple cart. Stop splitting with the guy.

Stop buying. But yeah I almost think it’s fair game. Unless the guy is charging premium for the singles. If it’s a split. The guy who did the work sourcing the box etc etc should get dibs on the best sticks in my book.

Knowing you, you couldn't do that Mus :D

You split the best with them. You keep the 50/50.

Like some others I would  just stop doing the splits with him.  That being said, years ago we had a cigar club that would meet once a month.  We would decide on the cigars to have for a happy hour type meeting (when you could still smoke in bars/restaurants here) and then order multiple boxes so everyone could have at least a couple.  We would just open the boxes and the members would grab and pay up for what they wanted.  If there were any left I or somebody else would take them.  It worked fine.    Not sure you would term this a true split.  I have done a few true splits back in the day.  We just divied them up straight out the box.

I've only split a few times with some friends,  with them present. I split the cigars and let them choose which group they wanted.

Thats how I have always done it. The box is opened when everyone is present . Multiple boxes everyone has a look. Then we split. Easy .

The one that does not pick gets to keep the box.
