MoeFOH's Movie of the Week 🎥

Each week we're going to spotlight a movie... be it a classic, new release, hidden gem, or outright turd... and open it for discussion: i.e. post up your favourite quotes, clips, memories... or dive deeper and give us a critique on why you think it's great, overrated, or a complete train wreck... And finally score it for us... :looking:

All contributors go into a monthly prize draw for a 3-cigar sampler! :cigar:

PM me with suggestions if there's a movie you want to nominate for next week's discussion.

Week #9: The Godfather Part 2

We've already covered the original in this series, and the second instalment holds the prestige of being one of very few sequels that ever come into the conversation of having eclipsed the success of the first film. For me, both films hold something extra special and it's extremely difficult to rate one higher than the other. That said, the switching chronology and the presence of De Niro probably put 2 on top... if push came to shove. :D

Over to you...

Where does this film rank for you? Does it top the original?

Best moments?... etc, and so on... post 'em up!!

If you've seen it, give us your score out of 10!

:perfect10:

100%. What could he have gone on to do? Amazing talent. A hugely intriguing side-story to this piece and his other work.

YES one of my favorite movies 10/10 can watch this everyday. This one and part one are the movies that got me hooked on Al Pacino.

Where does it rank? I'll let you know when I finally watch it all the way through! :D

I have to agree here. I had hoped to watch the first installment months ago, then the weather intervened in my plans. So I certainly can't claim that I have watched Part 2. Maybe some day over the summer...

May ranking : No idea out of 10

Funny, I thought that with this would be the Jason series with this week having a Friday the 13th.

Much like the first in this series, I have yet to watch it.

Cheers!

10. Perfect film. It had such a dark sinister tone. Also,Hyman Roth was played by the incomparable Lee Strasberg is top shelf.

*When I watch this scene (and I know me...) the way that I approached it is feeling like Michael should have pointed out to Fredo, when he said I'm smart and I want respect! Michael should have told him: "Fredo - you couldn't even remember the lie you told that you'd never met Johnny Ola. Then you're talking about how Johnny Ola told me about this place...Fredo - you can't make mistakes like this with the people we're dealing with. If the Family was in your control we would cease to be in less than a week..." or something to that effect. You know - in order to try to reason with a really stupid person before the inevitable resort. Also the highly satisfactory scene of Vito Corleone killing Don Fanucci and the sudden simultaneous street celebration going on right afterward, and Vito became the new but beloved Godfather of the neighborhood!

10 out of 10 for me. In my mind, the Godfather Part I and Part II are one movie.

I wholeheartedly agree. What I usually try to do is watch them in succession in 1 sitting. The story arc spans both movies, Part II is best enjoyed coming right off of Part I in my opinion.

10/10 for me as well

Part II is a better movie than Part I but I agree with John that it's best to look at both of them as a whole...and then ignore the turd...I mean third.

10/10

10/10 for sure, one of those movies that  if it’s on TV you need to sit down and watch it.  I was even able to convince the wife to sit down and watch it with me.

10. Couldn't be better.

I watch part 1 and part 2 one after the other usually and they're one amazing movie

Normally I'd like to give it a 9.8 just in case there's a better movie that comes up that needs a higher score but I don't think it will happen so 10/10 solid.

Highly recommend the book too. It has a lot more of background info and explanations of things that happen in the movie.

9/10. A great movie. The characters get so much more depth than the first, the movie feels so dense. Point deduction for the whole Frankie Five Angels turn. Why do the hit men try to confuse Frankie by telling him it was Corleone if they meant to kill him? The whole movie hinges on this and it doesn’t make any sense.

Acting is off the charts, especially Cazale. But hot take, I don’t think Deniros performance is all that great. He doesn’t do anything a long list of actors couldn’t. I’m sure I’m in the minority here, but I wouldn’t put this role in his top 5.

I'm assuming it would be so anyone in earshot (the bartender, etc, perhaps?) could potentially spread the word that it was Corleone who hit Frank, thus disguising Roth's involvement.

I think that makes sense... 🤔. Never thought about it before though. Good pick-up!

always thought it was de niro that said that. mind you, could have been both of them. brilliant here, brilliant in deer hunter.

great film. as for which is better, 1 or 2, tough. for me, that one had to break ground, so to speak, gives it the nod by the proverbial bee's appendage. same with star wars and empire. empire might have been a fraction the better but without star wars, ....

That's a great point.

Excellent but not easy for me to rate. I think it has to be 10/10 but it’s not a movie I go out of my way to watch. It’s hard watching someone surrender their humanity.

*Well gee - wonder why he won an Oscar for this role??
