Very sad news. May his soul be at peace.

Very sad indeed. He showed great passion for food and more recently BJJ, two thing that are a huge part of my life. I really enjoyed his perspective and the spotlight he brought to those things. He had struggled with addiction in the past so it wouldn't surprise me if he was depressed.

What a loss, I loved his storytelling. Lost a brother to suicide 2 years ago, I simply can not fathom what drives people over the edge. Sadness:confused:

I lost a loved one to suicide 15 years ago and was the one to find her.  You never get past it, but learn to live with it.  Those close to him may've known what he was going through.  Very sad.  Leaving a daughter without a father...  May he find peace.

Wow, why would he kill himself? Being a celebirty must suck...

Mental illness is a terrible thing. Appearances of happiness can be deceiving.

A someone who lives to eat and travel he always seemed like he had the world on a string. Even though I have zero insight to him personally I was shocked.

I lost my best friend since childhood, literally the first guy whose house I ever slept over as a kid, best man at my wedding, to suicide. I probably spent 100s of hours giving him pep talks over the years but he just began to see things through a different lens. Still, I was absolutely shocked when I found out, had just seen him three days prior. The guy had as much talent and ability and personality as anyone could have asked for.

Wow, shockingly sad news today. Bourdain’s shows were one of the few things worth watching on TV these days.

TOTAL  shock.  I did indeed like as well as respect him, greatly. Like y'all said earlier - no telling WHAT some celebrities are going through, despite all the fame, the money, the perks...the apparent love of millions!  Very sad, very sad day for so many of us whom he touched across the globe. May you find the peace and solace that apparently evaded you in this world. RIP :flower:

Depression is biochemical and can be suffered by anyone, regardless of celebrity.

Yea, what a shitty thing. He started his career about ten miles from where I live in Provincetown Massachusetts. People like to claim celebrates as their own, I know people who knew him back in the day. Everyone I've spoken to is sad. Hiis work was so very good. From street food and  Sunday dinners at the locals home to the Michelin star restaurants, I felt as if I'd been to the places he visited. What a tragedy.

Very shocking.  And his good friend and fellow Cher Eric Ripert found him.  I can totally sympathize as a good friend left me in that position last summer when he took his life.  :(  Saw Bourdain last year speaking in Toronto.  He was a great orator and overall interesting dude. Hard to believe he'd go out this way.  But this kind of thing is so unpredictable.

I'm not one to get shocked when a celebrity commits suicide, after all it seems like it's happening more and more these days, but this one really blindsided me. Absolutely shocking. His presence in this world will definitely be missed, probably a lot more then he ever thought it would. I'm truly sad.

I always wonder about these out-of-the-blue hanging suicides in hotel rooms. Always the chance it was sexual gratification gone wrong. A guy like Bourdain who liked to really "live life" and has a history of substance abuse would fit the profile of someone chasing that high.

If it was indeed "accidental" it is often covered up for the sake of the family and the dignity of the deceased, but I'm not sure if that's wise. The dangers of that kind of behavior are significant and should be discussed, just as the dangers of depression and mental illness are. Either way, I hope the truth comes out.

This is easily one of the most bizarre things I've read as a member here. His death, regardless of the fine points, is unfortunate. That said, I've read his books and watched his shows - he's always come across as needy, self centered, and insecure - to me. Again, his death is very unfortunate.

I've a sadly long list of friends who've killed themselves or died from disease at fairly early ages. AB's death is of no more or less import than theirs..

Hmm...I'm not sure how my post was interpreted as this not being a tragedy. My point is that if we want to reduce the incidence of either suicides or accidents the truth should be known. Perhaps drugs were involved as well--we don't know. My point is that the facts should come out so we can shed more light on causes of such things. Let's not let his death be a wasted opportunity to bring attention to these things and perhaps save a life in the future.
