I sometimes feel guilty about the coin I've spent on cigars. That quickly fades once I light up a quality stick with a spot on blend, or share a quality smoke with a good friend.

If I was born in 1912, I'd be one hundred today.. If I was born back then and started smoking cigars when I was 20 or so, lets see, that would be in 1932.. I would have been able to tell you much about the evolution of the Cuban cigar scene with taste descriptions from cigars like La Flor de cano, which started it's run in that year. I'd have memories of how the different sizes of cigars would come into fashion and then fade away. I'd have smoked cigars up to the Revolution and to present day. The thousands of stogies with brands that we recognize and many that are discontinued would have left a very rich and abundant cache of cigar memories that would be so great to share with others.

Well...

Thats not me!

If any of you fit this description and are kinda handy with a keypad, would you please share a word or two.

Thanks.

Same here, I don't eve like thinking about that or burning 20 dollars each time I spark up an esplendido or some such.

Some days I love cigars and other days I hate them, like yesterday when I had a plugged jl2 and epi especial back to back only to spark up a d4 and have the draw be tight.

Love to try similar vitolas across different marques and look for the differences and subtleties between the smokes. Finally coming across that one cigar that you can wait to get more of and put away for a while to see how it develops, it's a beautiful journey.

Here's my random thought. I wish I had started smoking cigars earlier. I was exposed to it early in my career around 1995. My boss and a few other consultants had gotten into the tail end of the "boom" At company events they'd congregate and pass around a box. I'd politely declined. I hadn't been into smoking at all so it was easy to pass up. But the real factor was the way my boss "lorded" around with his fancy Cohibas. His being a real douchenozzle made it easier to turn down. I remember liking the aroma, but not wanting to "smoke". I remember "Davidoff''s" being present and now I kick myself. As a young IT consultant I had a lot of disposable income. I shudder to think at what kind of collection I would have amassed if I "bit the forbidden fruit". :( At that time, Toronto smoking bylaws weren't as bad either. You could smoke in bars. High end hotels stocked cigars in their bars too. I missed out on a lot. So my philosophy going forward is to miss out on a lot less, where feasible. :)

here's my thought. I've lost considerable interest in cigars as of late. when I go out to smoke with buddies i'm just doing the act of smoking to socialize. I'm not thinking of the cigar or tasting the nuances...just smoking it. its been like this for a few weeks now. Hopefully i'll eventually snap out of it.

I feel guilty if I smoke 2 or 3 days consecutively. I will say to myself "No more cigars until Friday", or "don't smoke Monday or Tuesday and you can have one on Wednesday". I find the temptation of the warm weather and my deck in the evenings much too hard to resist most nights and give in more frequently that I should.

Best to quit for a while or smoke some really cheap sticks. Smoking a cigar holds different meanings for each of us. But at the very least it should be something you want to "experience" vs just "smoke". You've been through a lot. Dont be too concerned about the cigars at this point. Stay strong baccala. Big game tomorrow. :)

I think cigars are healthy, yes healthy. Well maybe not physically, but then again what is. But mentally yes. I rarely am enjoying the best cigars Cuba has to offer while fuming in anger. It gives me a break in the day to collect thoughts, relax, enjoy conversation with friends, or even talk work with my business partners or customers. Whatever it is it's a good time, and that my friends has to be considered healthy :cigar:

Riaz,

I went thru the same phase with my wine. After educating myself about wine like a mad man and buying the ones I loved since 2005 I just lost most of my interest about a year ago. I think I got to a point where I started to taste a lot of the same things from year to year and got bored. I remember having an internal discussion with myself about what I was going to do with the hundreds of bottles I accumulated thinking I would ALWAYS be crazy about wine...

As of a few weeks ago my passion returned. I opened a bottle of 1997 Stag's Leap and the light went back on! I am sure that will happen with cigars for you at some point.

MY CIGAR THOUGHT:

I hope I don't do the same thing with cigars. I already see I am much more engrossed in this than the vast vast majority of people who I know that enjoy cigars (other than you other FOHers). I hope I am not taking the fun out of it for myself by spoiling the surprises. Does that make sense? Can you get to a point where you know, or you think you know, too much and the fun goes away? Like smoking a Monte Grand Edmundo that just isn't quite as on as the last one and become disappointed the cigars are inconsistent. Rather than just enjoying the freedom to enjoy a good cigar and think about how fortunate we are.

Maybe it's just me.

Aaron, remember that you can still take a break away from cigars like you did with wine. In both cases, bottles of wine or cigars, they will have aged and, maybe, will be better when you get back to them!

Best,

Michel

I eventually went into treatment/therapy for depression and anxiety. After a while, I eventually was able to enjoy cigars, food, cooking, etc. Just give it some time. Keep talking and express whatever it is you are feeling. It sounds like you already have a good support group.

I agree. Getting into cigars has been good for my overall mental well being. I find it relaxes me and more importantly I've met a lot of great people in the process. :) We are social creatures. We do each other a lot of good by being in each others' presence. For some it's fishing, yoga, hunting, etc. Whatever your "thing" might be. As long as it brings some joy into your life what's not to like? There are a lot of "unhealthy" hobbies. Mountain climbing, drinking, eating, race car driving, cycling, etc. Just about anything you're into can affect you direly. :P No need to hide into a box and be afraid of life.

I've had the same experience with wine and scotch. Booze in general. Haven't been motivated to open a bottle of wine or pour a dram of scotch in a couple of months. The good news is that they are aging and I am smoking some wonderful cigars lately. Only been drinking water or diet coke while smoking.

I hope that I continue to learn about cigars.

I've never once felt guilty about what I spend on cigars or now more aptly what I take off the shelves and right off the top of the profit margin. For that matter, I've never felt guilty about any of my many expensive hobbies. Life is just too damn short to have regrets about that kinda stuff.

It makes me happy, lowers my stress level and allows me to spend time either in solitude or with my friends or loved ones.

Not doing the aforementioned would worth of regret.

Thank you indeed for Sharing Brandon, I hope things have continued on the up and up. Your right, it is a matter of time.

My random cigar thought is this :

When i light up, i know that for at least the next 45min, the time is mine, i don't have to be anywhere, do anything or be anyone. Its just me, my friends, my faithful dog, my drinks and my thoughts. :buddies:
