To my neighbors up north.......Are these fires of concern? What is the plan to tackle them? Is this the norm? How is the smoke affecting you? Appears to be affecting a large swath of the US. Just curious!

Smoke is horrific at the moment and i'm very far away from the fires. There has been firefighters sent from all over the place USA, France, Portugal etc. This is the worst fires in recorded history in Canada.

I don't think some people realize the damage this poor air quality has on your health. I avoid going outside when possible, anyone with asthma or breathing issues are not having a good time at the moment and I feel for them.

Flights in and out of Chicago were cancelled yesterday and last night due to the smoke.  The smell is unbelievable, like the neighbor is burning leaves.  I can't believe that much smoke has moved this far south.

Is Canadian media reporting how the fires were started? Natural? Man made?

Farting cows is what I've heard.

The smell from the forest fires has been off and on for a few weeks now.  I live in Eastern Ontario (border town with upstate New York), and about an hour from Ottawa Ontario and an hour from Montreal Quebec.

The air quality is having an impact on those with respiratory conditions.  My dad has COPD and some days are not good with the poor air quality...

I live in southwestern Ohio. They say we have fog all day on the weather apps because they don’t have a smoke icon. Almost too smoky outside to go out for a cigar. Almost.

No report of anything intentional and fire bans everywhere for a long time now. Fires are normal in Canada and the US but not this bad and typically in Canada they tend to be further West so not as much impact to Eastern Canada and the Eastern states. I’ve been in the Toronto area for over 20 years and we’ve never had a year like this for poor air quality.

Well I’m just a little up north, near your old home in VA, having a cigar outside now. It looks like a fog that is starting to lift, but it’s 100% smoke and smells like it. Hard to believe.

Looks at Quebec fires, started all at once in one day, clear skies, so couldn't of been lightning..  should be investigating, a phenomenon never been seen. Geothermal? Strange...

Western Canada had its share of wild fires which started earlier ( estimates close to 1MM acres burned). Attributed to a very dry season in the prairies and high winds lead to the spread. Dry prairie grass...

AQI reached a peak of 145 - but has improved considerably in the last couple of weeks.

The debate/concern going forward:

  1. dismantling of the fire response teams (helicopters, jump firefighters, water bombers)
  2. Controlled burns to reduce spread
  3. Impact of the dryness for most agricultural production this year.

I live in southern Ontario, and there have been days when being outside for awhile makes you cough, makes your throat hurt, etc.

A lot of the fires are caused by lightning strikes. The vastness of the forests in Ontario and Quebec is staggering.  Part of my job is monitoring critical infrastructure in the province.  I've seen drone footage of one fire last year that look like mushroom cloud.

I have been all over the remote areas in Ontario and Manitoba on canoeing and fly-in fishing trips. I can certainly attest to the vast wilderness. Guessing many lodge owners and outfitters have had to cease operations.

Aussies can relate with the horrors of bushfires. Hope our Canadian brethren stay safe and the fires are put out quickly.

I've lived in Montreal and then Toronto for nearly 40 years (28+12 years), this is the first time this has happened as far as anyone I know can remember. Forest fires are common since we have so much forest, and some part or other of it might get very dry, but nothing on this scale before, I believe this is the worst in our recorded history, it was more common out West, but even they have had record wildfires the past 5 years or so. Last year we had smoke from out West drift out to here, which also never happened before.

To give context I think Toronto/Ontario had 90th percentile rain this year or last, while Montreal/Quebec had 10th percentile. Similarly Vancouver is at high point, and Vancouver island/Victoria is at a low point.

I concur.  Born in Toronto. NEVER had to deal with this in my lifetime 40+ years.  Something has definitely changed, climate wise.  The forest fire #'s have risen.  Last summer there was hardly any and it was odd. The prior year 1600+  Even the thaw/flood season came and went with maybe only 2-3 communities up north that had to be evacuated.  We're seeing peaks and valleys with the data. It used to be predictable and follow a curve.

Showed up here again yesterday in DC.  Code Orange yesterday.  Not nearly as bad as a couple of weeks ago.  So far any way.

I read man made for some of it.

Generally it's lightning or carelessness.

The carelessness you can call man made. But that's not the same thing as arson.

Yuuuuuuup.  It's like IT for some companies. No one wants to budget until something bad happens, but letting something bad happen means you haven't been budgeting properly.
