Popular Post El Presidente Posted May 30, 2023 Popular Post Posted May 30, 2023 When we started FOH 18 years ago, Myspace was the clear social media leader and a young and upcoming Facebook had 5 million users. Twitter hadn't launched. Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Flikr, YouTube, Reddit, Instagram, SnapChat, Twitch, TikTok, etc etc. Now the world of AI. From the outside looking in, forums are dinosaurs in the modern world and yet they not only hang in there but thrive in the right environment (product/interest/moderation). Forums can certainly generate a sense of community that is hard to replicate. However, where next for forums? What digital products or evolutions could be incorporated in the future to enrich the forum experience? Are there legs yet left in the forum format?......dinosaurs as they may be. What makes them different? How can they be improved? 7
Popular Post Bri Fi Posted May 31, 2023 Popular Post Posted May 31, 2023 I think the demographic of cigar smokers will allow this forum to live for a good amount longer. Cigars aren’t for most teens or 20 something. I’m in my mid 30s and consider myself a young cigar smoker. I don’t know how to use tik tok and refuse to use it flat out. Most social media platforms are crap. This is a community, and a good one. One of the last places people can have somewhat civil conversations without being keyboard warriors. 7 1
Popular Post Nevrknow Posted May 31, 2023 Popular Post Posted May 31, 2023 True. Why I love this place. Trolls last all of 5 mins. 🤣 5
targa88 Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 Aside from the civil conversations. There is a wealth of knowledge that is embedded with the membership and is shared for all those who want to learn.
MickVanWinkle Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 I’m a late bloomer - this forum is a first for me. Was pleasantly startled by the overall civility and thoroughness of members.
benfica_77 Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 Discord is getting quite popular.....the younger generation has shifted from a traditional forum to the discord app focused on a topic of choice
Marco_011t556 Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 wonder if any mobile app launched later for FOH...to merge all old threads as well..but that would cost a lot
Cigar Surgeon Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 Forums are just the logical extension of BBS forums which existed back in the 80s. If they've managed to stick around 40 years I'd imagine they'll be around a bit longer. Everyone chatting about Discord this and Discord that. IRC with a fancy interface ...
Rhinoww Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 I have dabbled on discord, particularly for things like special interest conventions but found it to be a bit clunkier than a traditional (well managed) forum. From my perspective as one who comments and periodically will initiate a thread here, things are right on track.
Ford2112 Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 I'm a huge fan of forums . I have met great people from all walks of life on many different ones. This forum fast became a favorite . Such a rich community and a wealth of knowledge. I originally just wanted to order a cigar or two. I ordered more than a couple on 2424! I don't see an end to web forums anytime soon. I've been a member of various ones since the mid to late 90s 2
HoyoFan Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 I think I would maybe reframe this a bit. I don't think its a question of the medium. I think its a question of what it accomplishes. In this particular case, we've all stumbled across something magical that accomplishes a certain need that we all have to connect and persist as a community. As long as that works, we'll stick around. But if a better "tool" comes along that enables us to still get that feeling out of it, then we'll simply shift to that. In today's culture of the next best thing showing up sooner and faster, its really tempting to jump try and find a nail for the new hammer. But I think the question we should all be asking ourselves is, why am I trying to put the nail in the wall in the first place.
BrightonCorgi Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 I regularly visit about 8 forums including this one. I've met up with people on forums across the world and have hosted people from all over the world. Great way to meet people beyond your own locale with a high probability of caring on well in person.
ha_banos Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 right. now its sounding like a dating site. 'cig'der'

rascalmonkey Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 what a great coincidence that I started smoking habanos just about at the advent of the internet + forums ++ can't even imagine how someone could've figured out the crucials without lots of help
Popular Post Sir Diggamus Posted June 5, 2023 Popular Post Posted June 5, 2023 I definitely think there are legs left for the forum format. Back in the day I was a member of several cigar forums (FOH, Cigar Wise, HCF, Cigar Family, CA, etc...) and learned most of what I know today from participating in those forums. The social media platforms today are built for immediacy with a constant scrolling lineup of the latest conversation, making it very hard to go back and look what was posted by topic. It is like a neverending conversation. If this discussion took place on a format like Facebook or Discord it would be near impossible for me to go back and answer a topic like this one where the last post was four days ago, it would just have gotten lost under a pile of the latest chatter. I prefer being able to scroll through posts and choose to engage where I feel my opinion adds value. 5
BossHogg Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 Haha, I remember MySpace. You all have done very well to preserve and provide a great community of knowledge and help here! Looking forward to many more of them 👍 Thanks 🍻
LordAnubis Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 The greatest atrocity in this forums history was the cessation of LFTW/H. That absolute carnage was the best. Also how Ken is still here has got to be the world's greatest mystery. 1
