Capn_Jackson Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 Woke up to this news today. Sad. https://www.cigaraficionado.com/article/fire-destroys-fuente-tobacco-warehouse 5
Cigar Surgeon Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 Quote Tobacco Warehouse #3—contained roughly a million pounds of tobacco. https://halfwheel.com/arturo-fuente-tobacco-warehouse-catches-fire/423504/ That's really, really unfortunate. A million pounds of tobacco is a large amount of production and unfortunately it takes a year or more to replace that tobacco inventory.

Don’t know for how long, though.
SCgarman Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 Say hello to massive price increases on Fuente cigars, and all others made with this tobacco. A million pounds sounds tragic! The cigar industry as a whole is really taking it on the chin.
Islandboy Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 Wow, you’ve gotta admire Carlos Jr’s positive attitude though...as usual, he’s keeping his glass completely half full. 1
Puros Y Vino Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 (edited) Some quick math. 1million pounds = 453 metric tonnes. 1 Petit Corona weighs 0.012kg each, so...37,750,000 cigars lost. From the photo, I don't see any fire suppression in place. Bad move on AF's part if they skimped on that. Edited May 18, 2023 by Puros Y Vino Le math error

SCgarman Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 The article fails to mention how many tobacco warehouses Fuente has, but no doubt there are many. They are building a new factory for production in Nicaragua. So they have plenty of disposable income. Life is still good for them. 1
El Hoze Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 This isn’t the first time it has happened to them. There was a point in my life where I would fly 300 segments a year or so and I lived in Miami. I would see Carlito all of the time on planes and in the lounge at MIA, he was working constantly and always on his A game and any cigar he ever gave me was well beyond ordinary. A true living legend! Wish them the best. 4

LordAnubis Posted May 19, 2023 Posted May 19, 2023 They’ve seen the amazing habanos business model. They can’t replicate it out of incompetence. So they have to bring disasters into it to stack the deck in the supply shortage hands. 😂 masteR stroke. 1
BrightonCorgi Posted May 19, 2023 Posted May 19, 2023 Incredibly tragic and thank God no one harmed or killed. How did the smoke from the fire smell? What additional steps if any do they do to prevent or mitigate fires in their warehouses?

You can't really replace that tobacco,it is gone.New tobacco is planted and harvested anyways regardless what happened 1
Popular Post Ryan Posted May 20, 2023 Popular Post Posted May 20, 2023 Tobacco can overheat during fermentation to the point where it self combusts. Silage makers fixed that issue by wrapping the bales in plastic to keep out the oxygen, that's probably not feasible with or desirable for tobacco. Tobacco producers usually get over the overheating issue by breaking down the pilons and restacking them when they start over heating. Tobacco should be stored like munitions used to be. Rather then rebuilding one warehouse, they should rebuild four smaller ones, separated enough so they won't set each other on fire. Then if a fire happens, they lose a quarter, not all of it. 5

Aging takes time and there is no way to expedite aging newly grown tobacco. Of course most of us here are also "aged". Does that mean we are more rounded and smoother?!😂 1

BossHogg Posted May 22, 2023 Posted May 22, 2023 That's heart breaking. I would be devastated if that was mine. Glad no one was hurt.
