alexander.espinoza Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 I left San Francisco (born and raised) and moved to Las Vegas in 2020. I was able to finally buy a brand new home for 299K but unfortunately that is no longer the case. It’s impossible to find anything under 400-450K currently. Water supply is at a historic low, food prices are up, and gas is $5 a gallon. $7 a gallon with my parents in San Francisco.
Riverstyx Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 Restaurant prices are up but so are the meat prices at the grocery store. Sometimes it seems to make just as much sense to go to a restaurant if I'm not drinking. One restaurant manager told me he's now losing money on food and making it up on beverages.

All good until folks say no to a $10 glass of beer and start ordering an ice water or tea instead.

I'm a country club member and bought a wine locker there. They will stop offering them soon I am sure. Costs 10 bucks to cork one of my own bottles brought from home. They're unhappy with that.

I think a lot of bars and pubs here are waking up to the reality that they were able to get away with $9 pints for the longest time. But now with people facing cost pressures from all sides, I'd rather have a pint at home. 1
Kaptain Karl Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 That’s the problem when globally governments print tons of money while supply chains are crashed. More money chasing less goods. At least in the states this would currently a lot better if by late spring last year all stimulus was cut, the fed raised interest rates and stopped buying mortgage backed securities. But first it was “there’s no inflation”, then it was “inflation is transitory”, then it was “oh my god what have we done”. All the while tons of people without Wharton degrees were calling what’s happening currently from miles away.
El Presidente Posted May 25, 2022 Author Posted May 25, 2022 The next genius that feels the need to stroke himself and bring up US politics is finished here. 4

Popular Post El Presidente Posted May 26, 2022 Author Popular Post Posted May 26, 2022 We only hire under 21's in logistics. They normally start at 18 while at Uni and leave around 26/27 for greener pastures. They are superb workers and have a deep love of the team. Everyone in our senior team started in logistics. The denigration of young workers is way over the top. Our worst hires have been middle-aged/semi retired men and mothers 30 -45. Just a personal evaluation based on a no doubt limited sample size. 8

Everyone is terrible on average. There will always be individuals that will inspire you from any demographic. Send me one of your promising hires. I'm looking!

Rent is soaring and harder to find, our gasoline is $6 to $7 per gallon, and we are every day running out of water. Our produce though is some of the least expensive anywhere if you go to the right stores. It's not uncommon to be able to get maybe 10 lbs of Oranges for $5. And it's still very easy to find $1 street tacos every few blocks so it could be much worse! Tacos and 350 days a year of sunshine outweigh the negatives for me. Hawaii is obviously pretty similar to LA (without the cheap fruit). I’m actually going to trader joes every trip and bringing cheaper things back with me to the islands. No fruit Mr Agriculture check guy! 1 1
Ites Posted May 26, 2022 Posted May 26, 2022 Yup, it went crazy expensive all around. Electricity prices now when compared Q1 2020 is 6x, but Q1 2020 was fairly low so when comparing to 2018-2019 (more stable in general) its "only" a 3x increase. Gas prices was only slowly rising during the same period, until more recently where it took a steep incline for obvious supplier reasons here in Europe.. Groceries and general consumption items has risen noticeably but I'd guess we're talking roughly 20-50% increase on average.
Taco Posted May 27, 2022 Posted May 27, 2022 Interesting tidbit I read the other day.. “In Jan 2021, the 30-yr mortgage rate was 2.65% and average new home price in the US was $401,700. Today the 30-yr mortgage rate is 5.25% and average new home price is $570,300. Assuming a 20% down payment, that's a 95% increase in the monthly payment (from $1,294 to $2,519).“ All-in money printing totaled $13 trillion: $5.2 for COVID + $4.5 for quantitative easing + $3 for infrastructure. Mountains of money cause inflation. 13 trillion…and that’s just the US. Prez said it best, “it’s only just begun.” Unprecedented. 1 1
duabley Posted May 27, 2022 Posted May 27, 2022 Just paid $187 for 2... ok 3 drinks and a shared steak and lobster (special) plus potato side with the mrs. At the madona! Madness!!! Food was just ok. Gas is approaching 7usd in places out here in California, and building materials.... over 100k for a garage extension! We're all doomed
Homer Posted May 27, 2022 Posted May 27, 2022 What goes up, must come down. There is no such thing as eternally rising markets (stocks, building materials, gas prices etc).
Kitchen Posted May 28, 2022 Posted May 28, 2022 I hate to be a downer, but you ain't seen nothing yet. Harvest in the North is still 3 to 4 month away, and, with the severe fertilizer shortages this season, I fully expect food prices to sky rocket in Autumn. Ducks are still about $4 per pound where I am, and I love aged confit and pates. So I just may be making & stocking up on those this month.
porkchop Posted May 28, 2022 Posted May 28, 2022 Net zero energy policies are exasperating price issues. In the name of climate science, Western standard of living is going to drop precipitously over the next decade. 1
BoliDan Posted May 28, 2022 Posted May 28, 2022 We keep having to repost our entry level jobs. They were at $17/hour at the beginning of the year. But we aren't getting any bites at $20 now. We'll go $22 if it's still quiet.
