Guys, I'm thinking about picking up a kilt for the warm season. Really and truly. So, I'd like to know if anyone has occasion to wear one of the modern utility kilts. Not necessarily the traditional ones for pomp. but as regular wardrobe? Recommendations?

Ok... I'll bite...

I would avoid Wool or is that the traditional kilt ? do they come in other fabrics ? wicking perhaps ? just my thoughts at the moment...

I met a guy on a trail who uses one for hiking.  He loves it.  It’s made of synthetic materials and quick drying and fully modern.   I would certainly consider it myself for a long distance hike or if I hiked more.

Sorry, not much more than that.  Just an idea that a search for a hiking kilt may turn up an option you like.

You know why Scots wear kilts?

So the sheep don't hear the zipper.

I heard there are a lot of cliffs in Scottland. Friend over there told me, "Yeah, the cliffs help cause sheep to buck back and velcro gloves keep them from leaping to their death."

Never considered or dreamed about wearing a kilt. My boots and cowboy hat wouldn’t quite match.

That's an urban legend

You simply put the sheep's back legs down the front of your Wellington boots

Gaining in popularity. In the right circumstances, why not? Practical and comfortable.
Get over the prejudices, trousers post-date the kilt by thousands of years.

The trend came and went years ago in my neck of the woods.

Funny this. My girlfriend recently got me some sort of wannabe samurai leggins/kilt made of linen. I never wear it in town, but outside of work I'm never in town.

For messing around outside and in the house is nice.

Kilts are somewhat popular with a certain set here in Texas. They love what's called a utilikilt. Look em up. There's a good sized group that claim Scottish ancestry here. Just look at the hugely disproportionate number that died at the Alamo.

Thanks, gents. I'm going to do a little research. After  this crazy year, it seems fitting to stretch out a bit stylistically.

Plenty of poor souls get made fun, teased, laughed at, or profiled for things they can’t control.  This one will be all your own fault and completely avoidable.

My advice is get some comfortable pants or shorts for whatever utility you are doing.  Life doesn’t have to be so hard.

If one is inclined to have a 'victim' mentality then perhaps, but not everyone is that sensitive. Why fit in when you can be you?

I say go for it Gin!

Yep. I'm not a shorts-wearing guy. Only for working out. And I feel this would be something a little different and I darn well feel I can pull it off. Pictures to come. ;)

Yeah man, go for it.  I think if it’s a quality piece of clothing you’ll get more curiosity than ridicule.  But, that’s fashion.  Have fun!

And don’t get arrested on a windy day...

Lol internet folk.

In my opinion, as the OP requested from us, Kilts are best left for Scotsman, and people forging historical swords by hand in their back yard.

Sorry, you're going to have to help with 'internet folk'.

He asked for a recommendation for a utility kilt and you mentioned something about being teased.  Lol

I think he took it as what is your recommendation. The recommendation being not to wear a kilt.

Much like someone asking for recommendations on the best Guantanamera.

@Ginseng just admit it, you want to wear a skirt. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Lots of guys want to wear women's clothing. It's not that odd of a fetish.

Hmm, I do admit that removing women's clothing has been a lifelong hobby of mine. However, putting it on has not. Besides, I'd make a pug ugly lady.
