I recently received some Coros that are the darkest Cohibas I've ever seen, outside of the few Talisman and Behikes I've encountered (RAG JUL 19).  Sorry I don't have a pic to post at the moment (but will if anyone cares to see).  Suffice it to say though that laid next to some moderately dark Montes in my humi, they are about the same shade -- maybe even darker.  Maduro dark.  Since I don't plan on smoking these any time soon, I wondered if others' experience with really dark Cohibas has been any different from the traditional colorado blondies.  Do any of you have experience with the darker-shaded Cohibas?  Have you found they taste different?

A 15 ct Esplendido I purchased a few years back had maduro type wrappers...see below...smoked beautifully but were very full bodied...different from the classic cohiba taste in my opinion.

Looks like that Mahogany coloured wrapper that you usually only see on SCDLH

I think mine are even darker (assuming the photo does not understate).

I got some very dark Siglo III tubo packs from an LCDH in Havana. Wish I’d bought several boxes. Just an incredible Siglo III.

*edit tubos. not carton packs

I have some "darkish" 1966'a and a couple of boxes of Cohiba 2006 EL Piramides that are on the Colorado  / Maduro scale.  Nothing like that in regular production though.

I bought some Monte Opens a couple of months ago, as I wanted pics with the current band for CCW (I know I know, the prices you pay for running a cigar encyclopedia).

Thought they were a pretty great example of wrapper shade variation.

Will do.  You'll need to be patient.  They're in my office humi.

I have been seeing darker Cohibas lately.  Not really something I like to see.  If something isn't broke, don't fix it.  The darker production Cohibas I have tried, so far seem to taste fine though.  They don't taste like EL's which is what I was initially afraid of when I saw them.

I'm assuming they just ran out of the choice wrapper.  If someone took the band off and told me it was an EL, I wouldn't bat an eye (other than being kinda bummed).  That is what it looks like.  Not much sheen -- at least yet.

Proof is in the smokin' for sure.  I've had a fair number of beautiful Cohibas that had nothing going for 'em at all.  Others that were outstanding, like a recent circa 2012 Sig VI.  This one for me though is a horse of a different color.  Might be one for a side-by-side.

In my mind, Cohiba is a marca (apart form the Maduro 5 series and Edicion Limitadas, obviously) that traditionally uses wrappers with shades around the claro mark up to colorado claro, perhaps colorado less so. I'm definitely not used to seeing them approach the colorado maduro mark.

Agree.  In the past, that was a sign that they were fakes.  But now, not so much.  Hopefully they go back to the lighter wrappers.  As I said, the flavor seems to be unchanged, but for some reason, it still doesn't sit well with me.  LOL

A picture I have just taken shows the darker trend. Siglo VI with years written above

Remember, EL wrappers are not maduro. Just upper tapado which tends to be darker.

Darker wrappers on Cohiba is unusual but I have seen it. I would imagine it would most likely occur on CoRo since they crank out so many.

I recall some Monte 3s in 5 petacas from 2012 I believe that were borderline oscuro. And I get blind bought Monte 5 quite often that are quite dark. It happens.

Dark wrappers on Cohibas are quite rare...more so than any other marca, IMO

With the exception of Qd'O, I'd wager.

I'm going to have to revise what I said earlier.  I maintain what I said about the flavor being good, but I just smoked a dark wrapper CoRo, and I smoked one yesterday, and both days, the burn was not good.  Lots of tunneling.  I had to touch them up constantly.  In general, cigars burn kind-of funky with an ocean breeze, but this was worse than most.  In contrast, the Siglo VIs I have been smoking, with traditional Cohiba wrappers, have been burning fine.

True, Mike.  Back in the day there was a lot less consistency.  Not long ago, I smoked a Hoyo Epi 2 from that era that was black as coal, but if I had a more recent one like that, I might question it.
