I am not sure almost. It feels like Cubans are starting to look more like Non-Cubans

The RYJ bands do look a bit tacky / non-cuban but overall the rest still feels Cuban to me. Most of the non-cuban RyJ and all the other global brands are just gaudy.

I do like that Monte varnished box. Cigars look to be a nice size too.

It's the foot bands. Totally unnecessary IMO. Seems like nothing more than HSA jumping on the NC bandwagon.

Monte Herederos. And it's a great size--right in between a Corona Gordas and a Hermosos No. 2.

Looks like the JL Seleccion Especial came out of nowhere and were announced only today. Same with the new RyJ line which ostensibly mimics the Monte Linea 1935.

I'm going on record now: this RyJ Linea de Oro will not be good or sell well. RyJ has a terrible track record on special releases. They've yet to surpass the Churchills with any release and it remains their best model by far.

We'll see if my prediction holds true...

New Box factory appears to be paying dividends. Let's hope they are pumping these out by the end of the year.

They needed to up their packaging game. Some of the packaging quality they have been putting out in recent years has been pure rubbish. Emerging markets won't put up with that on a top $ product.

BBF Reserva is right up my alley. Well it is....except for the price tag :D

While I do agree that the Herederos box looks stunning, I'd rather buy it like an accessory. I see a use for it storing lighters, cutters and the like, but I'd rather pay $150-$200 less and get the cigars wrapped in "Granma" and handed to me in a knotted plastic bag. But I guess that's just me................

I think they look really gaudy. Prefer the plain slb, even a dress box is pushing the boat out a bit.

The foot bands are just truly awful.

Perhaps the newer smokers to Cuban cigars are driving this change and with the US market opening up a bit (although seems to have reversed) they are trying to compete with over the top packaging.

I don’t know when or why foot bands started, but, along with the 4”-5”-6” “bands” which cover all but the heads, they seem to have the sole function of cracking wrappers. I would take a SWAG that the practice started to cover poorly wrapped sticks. Now some NCs are marketed “shaggy.”?‍♂️

Cigar boxes...! The average cigar consumer is a friggin' moron! Boxes are made to land in the trash, after keeping cigars from rolling onto the floor for some period in time. Nothing more!

You make a great point, spend more time and effort on the cigars. Pack em all in white paper bags like peso cigars.I smoke the cigar not the box!

You can't smoke the box. I'd rather have a $15 smoke in a plain box than a $25 one in a varnished one.

But Prez is right...from a marketing standpoint it's brilliant. Asian collectors will snap these up.

I knock down my SLBs and one day hope to make a wallpaper out of them. Can't do that with these fancy boxes!

it would be like a 60 year old Macallan coming in a moonshine jug with XXX on it ?

Give me these all day long so the prices stay low and not attract the collectors/flippers!

Well. NC producers need fancy boxes for three reasons.

  1. They have 0% Cuban tobacco in their cigars ?
  2. They have to stand out and differentiate themselves from literally thousands of other products on B&M shelves.  NC to NC competition is tough.  CC's will always be sought out.
  3. They have 0% Cuban tobacco in their cigars

Personally I love the plain look of a cabinet.  There are some really nice dress boxes too out there.  I do appreciate the look of these new boxes. But to me, its about the product inside.

I think point 2 is the biggest reason. There is SO many companies putting out NC cigars. Ever walk into a B&M in the US? The change out vitolas, blends, etc at a rapid rate and there can be literally hundreds of brands/sizes. Cuban has zero competition amongst Cubans. Shows in the customer support too between the two as well.

Do you really think they are producing boxes at that quality level on the island? I've not seen a state run business produce Anything to that level of quality.  My understanding was that the new factory was aiming to produce "volume" boxes. The photos in the article only show what appear to be Standard SLBs and SBNs.
