MoeFOH Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 Two American icons go up against the theoretical erasure from history firing squad in 50/50 this week, you can pardon one, who do you save? You know the drill: read the question, vote on the poll, elaborate in the thread if you so desire. Voting participants go into the draw for an El Pres sampler! - Drawn next Wednesday (Aus local time). All about 50/50... 50/50 is a weekly poll where we find out whether or not some serious bones of contention questions can be finally be buried or will instead remain above ground as a fleshy 50/50 debate... you know, such weighty issues as these... If given no other option: are you a Cohiba or Monte person? do you prefer Hunnicutt or Trapper in M*A*S*H? Connery or Moore as Bond? Apple or PC? Smooth or Crunchy peanut butter? do you prefer wearing men's or women's underwear? Sacrificing chickens or virgins? ...that sort of standard fare. Vote in the poll and further bolster your standpoint in the thread below if you wish. Poll Votes are public and there's a couple of sticks up for grabs for participants. Also, PM me Polls that you'd like me to conduct on 50/50 and there'll be a prize for those we decide to use.
Deeg Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 That's a tough one, because both men are so iconic. Not like you can say "a lot more where they came from" in either case. Each has a strong cultural legacy that would be sorely missed. So, I chose selfishly - Johnny Cash. Simply put, I'm not the world's biggest fan of Hemingway as a writer - or at least less a fan than I am of Cash as a songwriter and singer. Papa's blend of adolescent machismo and self-important grandiosity could get tiresome in his weaker moments as a writer.
inter4alia Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 Sorry, Earnest will have to go. Simply put, I'm more of a music guy than a novel guy.
CampDelta369 Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 I listen to a lot of music. So it’s Cash all day over Hemingway. Although as someone who grew up on the ocean sailing, “The Old Man and The Sea” was a favorite. This is a great version of Trent Reznor’s “Hurt”
Islandboy Posted July 24, 2019 Posted July 24, 2019 This is a tough one, both of them being so iconic. I’m not a huge fan of either in their genre, but I certainly appreciate what they each represent to their craft. In the end, I’m going with the one whose lifestyle most appeals to me - Ernest.
LLC Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Both could go and it wouldn’t really make a difference to me but if I was to save one it would be Hemingway. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
MD Puffer Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Yeah yeah. I know. Hemingway and Cuba and all that. But we're talking about The Man in Black here. The last time Hemingway had any impact on my life was 8th grade literature class. But I grew up with Johnny Cash playing on the stereo. And Jim Croce, Waylon, Van Morrison, Bocephus, Merle Haggard, Charlie Daniels Band, Ronnie Lee Milsap, and- obviously, Alabama. C'mon people- it's Johnny Freaking Cash!

Bram Smoker Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Best 50/50 yet. I dearly love them both. Cash would have to go because my wife isn't a fan, and thus my wife listening time of Cash has diminished over the years. She can hate Papa all she wants, but she cant tell me what I can read....yet
Tonyontop Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 I’d save Johnny as I personally listen to music more than I read. Sorry EH ??♂️ P.s. yes I do know how to read ?
dobbs Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 this one is hard, have to keep hemingway though, just because -dobbs
alloy Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 The Man in Black always. Tough choice, but the "Ring of Fire Man wins!
eastburn84 Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 This is a tough one! Truth is I would take Johnny Cash's music over Hemingway's writings any day. That being said, I voted for Hemingway due to the fact he would easily woop Johnny's ass in a fight. Hemingway was a mans man, he was known to be a terrific sport fishermen, traveling the Atlantic coast entering fishing tournaments and winning most he entered. He would offer the locals a chance to win the trophy back by going 3 rounds with him in the boxing ring. Its been said he never gave a trophy away. Hemingway.... Avid hunter, fishermen, self proclaimed war hero and a historic writer with a drinking problem. All and all a true American Bad Ass. Cash..... A great country artist with a coke/drinking problem. 1
srbbones Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 In 200 years, Hemingway will still be studied. I love Cash, but it is not the same. 1
Chucko8 Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 This is a tough one today. Both will be recognised and held in regards for their artistic contributions to the relevant fields. My decision is weighed upon that which I'm more versed in, that being Cash. Folsom Blues!!
Fuzz AI Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Get rid of Hemmingway, we still have his lookalike in @Habana Mike 2 1

Our Captain and First mate only called him "Papa." I've never been a fan of Cash's music or the genre. Losing Cash wouldn't affect me in the slightest. But with out Hemingway we would never have heard @Habana Mike say "Papa es mi Padre" 1 1
nKostyan Posted July 25, 2019 Posted July 25, 2019 Not quite the right question. Literature versus music. They both made a significant contribution each in their field. But J. Cash is more important to music, than E. Hemingway is to literature. 1
