Recently I have turned into a Cohiba snob.

I am working my way through a box of MSU Nov 17 CoRo's and they are just delightful.

How am I meant to let them get to be 3 to 5 years old?

Yes, if you like them now, why wait 3-5 years? A bird in hand......

Agree.  There is always the possibility that they taste better to you now, than they will in 3 to 5 years.

If you like them so much as they are, why wait?

You must get away from this mentality that seems so prevalent in the Cuban cigar world.

I have seen too many posts on FoH and elsewhere along the lines of: “Man I love [Fill in Cigar] they are outstanding now, I’m gonna put them down for another 5 years can you imagine how good they’ll be then?”. I sure can, 99% chance that the cigar won’t be as good in 5 years if you love them now. Smoke them all now. Enjoy it!

If you love them now why in the hell would you let them rest for another 3-5 years? Smoke the damned box already and buy another one or two.

The mentality comes from the plethora of posts on this site (and from our host) suggesting that cohibas and certain other marcas greatly from a few years of rest.  And, just because one enjoys a stick now doesn't mean he/she won't enjoy it more later.  Enjoyment is relative.

I would suggest the OP take a look in the auction and consider if the premium for aged cohibas is worth it.  To me it isn't, but that's just me.

Buy another box or two is my motto ?

I have 4 or 5 boxes of Nov/Oct 2018 CoRo's. I may have to try one to compare...

As for smoke this box within a month... I dont think it will last that long.

Have been dipping into it over the past 6 months and they have just gotten better and better and really seem to be at the sweet spot now.

The most daunting aspect of this hobby, the patience required to stock up enough cigars to wait so many years, whilst still enjoying when you want. I’m trying to get there myself

I am with you. They never make it very far for me. My biggest regret is having gone through 5 boxes of Cohiba 1966 with less than two years on them! I feel your Pain!

Smoke half or two thirds now.Put away the rest

Buy another box or two if you can afford it and do the same , smoke some age some .In Australia it is basically a thousand notes for a box of Cohiba Robusto from Rob , where I live $ 2500 and that is no BS .

So,  if you do like them so much at this moment  keep going . You almost have two years on that particular box which is for me and for any other cigar the absulote peak time to smoke them . 18 months to two years.

Enjoy

You will never know until you smoke a good aged cigar.

But what if I have?

Aging is overrated.

It must serve a valuable purpose, though, right? For example, I have a box of HdM Epi 2 RUM sep 18 of which I have sampled two of that have been pretty blah, hoping some age can help bc now they're quite forgettable. I didn't get from FoH, so maybe that's my problem but they look decent...

I agree in a way, but I prefer to focus on the fact that smoking young cigars is vastly underrated.

Much like friendships/relationships,   the beginnings are full or excitement and mistakes, and stark experience.        Long term relationships are comfortable, deep, and certain.

You might have.  All I can say is the cigars I have aged at least 4 - 5 years smoke better than the younger aged cigars that I have smoked.  But as they say opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.  YMMV

Then maybe it’s not for you but that makes it over rated for you, not necessarily over rated for others.

Personally I like the idea of having lots of younger and aged cigars. Like wine it is good to buy a quantity that you can sample over time and learn your preferences yourself and not rely on others.

It's funny.  I have typed these same three words in several threads and the reactions (approval/disapproval) are always different.

Don't read too much into my comment.  I don't mean that young are necessarily better than aged.  I have had many aged cigars that were divine, and many more that were not.  I've often regretted aging sticks when they were smoking great young based on the mistaken belief that through cosmic intervention age can only make a great smoke greater.

I think Master Po 99call captured my sentiment: "smoking young cigars is vastly underrated."  Much like women, I like them all, but they don't necessarily improve with age.

Oh, I have had many sticks that were very "blah" and worse: "yuk."  Then lo-and-behold, after a good long rest, an incredible transformation occurred.  It most certainly can serve a valuable purpose.  Just not all the time.

I agree young cigars can certainly be excellent and should be enjoyed and not looked down on.

It depends on the quantity and obsession of one’s collection. Of anything, really.

I love letting some sit and age for years and years. Some I crack open when they come in the door. Some I let calm down for a month.

Wherever we go I say I collect Cuban cigars.

But I also say I collect houses and husbands. Mr Beaver is my first.
