It's not that strange when you consider so many Koreans eat it every day, but I love kimchi. I make kimchi soup too. I also love seaweed and seaweed crackers. And recently, Amaro Montenegro with an orange wedge and lots of ice after a meal on a hot day.

Bak Kwa or Long Yok. I could eat a kilo of this stuff on my own in one sitting. There are a lot of versions, but I quite like the Singaporean one that is smoked over charcoal.

Canollis! Except you cannot find a good one anywhere on The Gold Coast, Brunettis and Cavalaros in Melbourne do the best!

Also any sashimi - cannot get enough of raw fish

We call it dried meat in Singapore/Malaysia and is available throughout the year especially during Chinese New Year.

I'm quite partial to Bee Cheng Hiang brand when I'm in S'pore.

it's all about personal taste of course, but Ken, you don't do the cod justice. Freshly caught, fried winter cod, hung for one day, can be a treat. The trick is not to cook it too long. Cod can quite quickly be overdone and then will become dry and tough. Depends very much on the preparation (as confirmed by skalls wink.png )

Good reading: Mark Kurlansky: Cod - A Biography of the fish that changed the world.

read 'Cod' and some of kurlansky's other books. thoroughly enjoyed them.

i swear to you i have given cod every chance. i really do not understand it as love fish of all manner. and i have tried cod in so many ways around the place. one trip to spain, i ate little else, trying to understand the fuss. what a waste. i just think that for reasons unknown, it does not appeal.

i am waiting for the cod from damascus.

Treats/foods that make you go "Hmmmmmm"

Leif came across from Tokyo for havanathon and brought some lovely gifts including the below box of Kit Kats....Wasabi Kit Kats :D

With a little trepidation, we cracked them in the office on Tuesday......Delicious! Who would have thought? Sweet, milky, that Kit Kat crunch with just an aftertaste of Wasabi. Cheers Leif

Let us know if some of the more unusual foods/treats that you have tried. Post a pic if you can.

Pleasure Rob! Good to hear you guys enjoyed them, it's one of the odd Japanese treats that we usually take back to my family and friends in Germany.

Now I'ml looking for a good bottle of Japanese Whisky to take back next week for the Christmas holiday back home...

Funny enough, we've been actually discussing to come down to Australia again in February. The wife hasn't been since nine years and it seems like my short trip to Havanathon has sparked her interest again!

I'll give you a shout if we decide to turn up, would love to sit on the rooftop deck again to enjoy a smoke!

Lutefisk. I love the stuff. Properly cooked it's flakey. Add melted butter and black pepper and mmmmmm, Norwegian delicacy (that isn't really enjoyed in the home country anymore).

With all due respect...

Savoury pudding containing sheep's pluck (heart, liver and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and encased in the animal's stomach.

Aye, ye cannae beat a guid Haggis!

I was going to make haggis once, but I didn't have the stomach for it...

My wife thinks I am bringing boxes of cigars back from London when in reality I dump the Sobrasalientes in the rubbish bin and fill the boxes with these delicacies. Then, neither she nor my nephew are any the wiser...

Ken, I am sorry for you. Good cod (not too old-grown) is like a QdO Panetela - Don't smoke it hot and you are greeted with delicate, subtile aromas.... innocent.gif

no argument and it is why i have tried and tried. i figure that so many enjoy it and even more importantly, enough top chefs rate it so highly, that there must be a lot more to it. but i can't find it. next time i am headed for spain or somewhere where it is revered, i will ask for recommendations. i have not completely given up, though i hold out little hope.

Would love to have both of you here! Should you decide to do so, give us some lead time in order that we can arrange a weekend away together (with partners) to Noosa or Byron Bay.
