Quahetas Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 I am fairly new to the cigar world and I was just wondering how you guys have the discipline to age cigars? I have tried on occasion only to give in and smoke away! Am I the only one?
Popular Post Pedro2486 Posted August 5, 2014 Popular Post Posted August 5, 2014 The secret is in Robs cunning sales strategy. You buy so many cigars there is no choice but to have some age 10
Popular Post potpest Posted August 5, 2014 Popular Post Posted August 5, 2014 Buy cigars constantly, way more than you'll ever smoke, think of buying nothing else, buy when you can't afford it, think thoughts like: do the kids really need that college fund? Eventually this obsessive, compulsive behaviour results in aged stock. 10
Reevzy Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Unfortunately the guys are right. I had the same question when I started smoking over a year ago. As it so happens, I found that buying boxes of cigars is a thrill and dare I say it, a bit of an addiction. Turns out I have so many boxes now I sure can't smoke em all in a weekend. Although I did just buy a 13 year old box of Punch DC's

Ryan Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 The only solution is to buy more than you smoke. Not always the easiest thing.
CaptainQuintero Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Sometimes people have aged cigars because they like the flavours, sometimes it is just a side effect of buying factors such as availability of favourite cigars or sales etc. Sometimes we're just a little greedy or easily excitable and get carried away and aged cigars are a physical embodiment of our weaknesses. 1
mk05 Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 I use a tool that is not very trendy these days: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patience ruthless. It's kind of like keeping a garden.
PapaDisco Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Well . . . I keep trying to age but like you, burn too many up between what I smoke and what my friends smoke. If you want to age a fresh box out, say, 5 or 10 years, you're going to need (IMHO) a box for each year you want to age. So 10 boxes if you want to have at least a box left in 10 years. Very rough rule of MY thumb, which likely is different from YOUR thumb . . . I've taken to just paying up and buying 10-15 year old boxes sometimes, and that will cost approximately double the current box price for stuff that has aged well. The stuff on Rob's aged list have been very well for me. For stuff that's spectacular and rare it can cost many times double, and for sticks that have not stood the test of time, you can likely get them for almost the same as current box prices; but 2X the current price is a rough approximation for mainstream, 10 year old stuff. So, would you rather buy twice as many cigars, but have to wait? Or buy half the sticks and smoke them now? Your call amigo! Lastly, you sometimes get lucky from a B&M. The finest box of Punch Punch I ever had came with 5 years already on them (2009 box date) straight out of duty free (which is so friggin' expensive they might as well have been charging 'aged' prices ), I've also picked up 5 year old HdM Epicure 2's, boxes of H Upmann PC's with 4 years and a magical box of R&J Churchills 5 years old for current 2014 price just by rummaging through the shelves.
LeafLover Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 IMO aged doesn't always mean better. I.e. I am smoking out of an :07 box of RGCE and I feel it is tasting past its prime. Change your perspective to equate age as "ready to smoke." Might make this wonderful vice of ours a little less frustrating. 1
joeypots Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Welcome to the dark side and no, you're not the only one. It gets expensive. It depends on how often you smoke a cigar and what you consider aged. Being new, you may not appreciate how many cigars people have in their collections. Quite a few people who have been into Cuban cigars for years will have 20 to 40 or more boxes on hand. They don't call it the dark side for nothing. 3
CUBANO Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Buy more than you smoke, and in a few years you will have a bunch of age cigars.
earthson Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 I keep 4 humis, which keeps my financial outflow in check. With that, I only smoke a few cigars a week - as long as I keep my humis stocked, there's a chance to age a stick 3 or 4 years or so. More than half of the smokes I buy are ones that I know I can enjoy in 6-12 months of purchase. This helps me keep my hands off of the ones I am trying to age.
LGC Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 If you have the cash, you can buy aged cigars from certain vendors.... or buy from folks that are unloading or flipping their aged stuff. If you aren't rich, then buying more than you smoke is your best option. 1
RijkdeGooier Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Just buy what you like to age and put it in a separate humidor in a separate room. Keep what is ready to smoke in your smoke now humidor. Keep a list what can be transferred and when tp the smoke now humidor I find my separate room to hold about 4 times as many cigars as the smoke now humidor.. Currently smoking boxes from roughly 05-08. Some older too.

Buying more than you smoke helps too but it's hard to keep your hands out of boxes in reach.
egoo33 Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Is there a rule if thumb for certain marcas when it comes to aging? Like does a box of Cohibas need to be laid down for 3 years or is it all kind of vary hoc by box ?
