asmartbull Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Is there a rule if thumb for certain marcas when it comes to aging? Like does a box of Cohibas need to be laid down for 3 years or is it all kind of vary hoc by box ?This could easily be a thread of it's own.Given recent production possibly breaking some rules of thumb. Prior to 2010, I believe most needed to yrs to be smokable, 5 yrs to really be enjoyed.

egoo33 Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Varies by Marca and Vitola. This could easily be a thread of it's own. Given recent production possibly breaking some rules of thumb. ajgagnon Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Two words: Online Humidor Min 3 boxes, with a 6 mth stay before shipping. By the time 6mths has rolled by, you will have gotten over the urge to smoke them right away. Prez thinks of every angle to serve us better. Brilliant pusher, uh, I mean service. Seriously, he helps us become knowledgeable, picks great stock, provides a place to hide the booty, and will even help liquidate if the terms of life demand it so. Best way to keep aged stock is to stick around here. It will happen on it's own.
Bartolomeo Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Buy multiple boxes of same smoke, smoke out of one box, age the other.....good indication of where the cigars are at and how they are progressing
armmmmm Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Look for the "Locker" link under the monkey. Always wondered what that link was...never actually opens for me. Says I need to register even when logged in.
Quahetas Posted August 5, 2014 Author Posted August 5, 2014 Great advise from everybody. Guess I'll get started now. Wait, I don't get paid until Friday! I Think a second mortgage is in the cards. Ha! Have a great day everyone.
Habana Mike Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Always wondered what that link was...never actually opens for me. Says I need to register even when logged in. Yep, you have to open a locker account. It's separate from a forum account.
Popular Post PigFish Posted August 5, 2014 Popular Post Posted August 5, 2014 I say decide who and what you are early. Are you a collector or a smoker? Why concern yourself with collector activities and their mindset if you are just interested in smoking the best cigar you can lay your hands on, on any given day? Carpe diem! I have an ample supply of cigars, surely. Aging cigars, unsmoked cigars… death cigars if you will. What good is a death cigar? My friends will enjoy them I guess!!! Buy what you like to smoke and smoke what you like to buy. Any that are left for tomorrow, age another day! Buy good cigars because you want to own them to smoke and if they age, well, that means that you are not smoking enough!!! Screw the collector mindset and go for a cigar that you think is good when you want it. It might be your last… You never know! Best advice I can give. Heart attack survivor… Take it for what it is worth! -Piggy 5

I think I may just grab a cigar I've been saving for that "special moment" and burn it down tonight.
LLC Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 It is likely one day you'll be buying more than you smoke and that will make aging some easier. In the meantime I would suggest buying cigars by the box and when you find a box you really enjoy stop smoking them and put them away when your down to five or so. If you do this and move on to a new box you'll start off being able to age what you enjoy. Down the road if you have one of those aged cigars at different intervals it will give you a good sense of what you like to age and for how long.
dowjr1 Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Buy more than you smoke, and in a few years you will have a bunch of age cigars. This is my strategy. Plus I have some nice NCs that have some time on them and are smoking well. I will burn through those and when I'm done the new and improved inventory I am currently building should be good to go. 1
stogieluver Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 No way to do it other than to buy more than you smoke. I smoke 8-9 cigars a week, which consist of 5 pc's or smaller sizes for my Monday-Friday smokes and larger sizes for my weekend smokes when I have more time to smoke. So, I keep a stock of pc's and smaller to satisfy my daily requirements and buy larger less frequently smoked sizes for aging. As time goes on, my aged stock will be larger, more time consuming and more enjoyable special occasion smokes. It's working for me. 2
Dbone Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 As Bart mentioned, 2 box rule helped me get some stock built up. Robs locker works too. I'm not going to say aged cigars are overrated, but sometimes I feel it is. However, it's all personal preference. Buy big on sales or when you fall into extra ? On other suggestion, you'll need good storage, I mean a big cooler or cabinet, or both lol 2

I stopped smoking junk sticks because I figured, why smoke garbage, we never know how long we have on this earth. I think I may just grab a cigar I've been saving for that "special moment" and burn it down tonight. Solid philosophy! I've found myself reaching more and more for those cigars I've set aside for a 'special' occasion. It's kind of like never eating in your dining room unless it's a holiday or you have company. We eat in there every night now! Every day you're alive is a special occasion - especially at my age! 5
Paul3 Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 I buy more than I can smoke, helps me forget how many I actually have. OLH is fantastic as well, too far away to grab a cigar for an impulse smoke and I rarely look at what I have in my locker.
Stogieninja Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 It's simple - plan it out. Figure out how long you want to age your smokes, then figure out how many cigars you smoke in a year, and buy what's necessary. If you smoke 100 a year, and you want to age smokes for five years, buy 200 a year for five years. Or buy 1000 cigars now. After that just buy 100 cigars a year to maintain. 1
LGC Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 I would also recommend traveling tons for work, living in a hot or cold climate, move into a larger place requiring maintenance, and having twins. That will make the aging process go much faster ! 1
... Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 I'm on year two of my five year plan... Sounds reasonable. I've been stockpiling the host's locker with sticks I am planning on smoking later. That way I save on storage room (quite scarce in the wineador right now) and the aging stock is safe from my digging in it
El Presidente Posted August 7, 2014 Posted August 7, 2014 With few exceptions for me ( and I mean my tastes alone), 5-8 years is enough aging on most cigars. I enjoy plenty fresh, love 3-5 on most, up to 8 on some. +8 on very few (and those are the ones that develop a sweet cream core such as Dieux/Punch + Hoyo Churchills etal. I am not a huge believer in putting a box at the back of the humidor. I like to sample them once or twice a year, when I hit a cigar from that box that is say a 94 point cigar, I start to smoke through them. Too often I have left boxes too long hoping for a 96 experience only to find I preferred them a year earlier. Know your tastes. That needs to be ones priority. 2
pbibby Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 For me it's easy. I smoke about 30 cigars a year. That's it..... About one box a year for me and I can maintain my stash....
actzz541 Posted August 8, 2014 Posted August 8, 2014 for me the box buying is an addiction, not really proud of it but its the truth. Like others I have way more than Ill smoke so aging is a bit easier. And I guess it just depends on what you want to age, if you can keep your hands off it lol!
