So is it worth to hunt down a discontinued box of these, or are the 2 a good enough substitute? Also is the Spanish RE "true" to the flavor of the marca? Thanks guys!

a "substitute" for what? The No.2 is the best of the line, IMHO. I know some people prefered the aged No.1, or the simplicity of the No.4, but for my taste the cleanest typical flavours are to be found in the No.2 with 3 or 4 years of age (minimum).

I've only tried one Spanish RE and been told it does not represent the flavor of the Marca.

It was an excellent cigar, but too bad it was way too small.

I disagree. It definitively tastes like a Diplomatico to me. I've already smoked half of my box, and I will probably buy some others.

Taste is, as always, subjective. I do not care for the #2, didn't like the RE (tasted very generic to me), but love the #4 and #5 - no other stick has that paprika flavor.

Out of the handful I've tried of each its the number 1, number 3 then 2. (Although the number 2's I've had were not aged like the 1's and 3's) Never tried the 4 or 5.

You're going to hate me/this but put your feelers out and try to get your hands on some Partagas (stay with me!) tres petit coronas.

With the age they have on them now they are heavy sweet cream with lots of paprika. No earthy hotness or exhaust pipe harshness.

If there is a partagas out there for mr klaus I'd put money on it being the TPC to wow you

Hard to find though :/

Fresh they had no Dip flavour to me, they were all spun sugar/candy floss/cotton candy. Which if you like that was great.

They started to settle down after 6 months or so and now (to me) they are pretty much true 'dip'.

For me I prefer a No.1 to the No.2; but I've never has an aged 2, so my opinion may change if Frank is right about aged 2s being better.

Are there any opinions out there on 3s from 2006?

had some a while ago. the 2006 no. 3 i had just wasn't true to the marca as i've sampled. even the '02 no.3s were better. but then again, the 3s were just meh.

as stated above, i preferred the 1s and 2s much more. 4s are something i've been trying to get my hands on for a while now! and spains, i'm just waiting for a good time to pull the trigger. not yet though... they'll still be around for a while :)

I'd give them a shot but HTF - and I wouldn't want a whole box at first...

I guess with the HTF there would be no issue selling the remaining if you didn't like them, certainly a very safe bet either way!

I treasure my boxes of 4 and 5, I get rich dark chocolate from mine and its a great smoke after a fine meal.

I also enjoy the #2's very much.

The RE's are getting better, I also did not get "dip' from them right away but going into a year they are nice,

not screaming "DIP!!", but nice.

I'm smoking one now from a box I just got, (maybe from the same place you've seen them) excellent cigar so far! ok.gif

Yeah, we'd all like another 2 or 3 cigars in the Diplomatico range let's be honest, but the number 2, as it stands, is still a unique and treasured inclusion to my rotation.

I've come late to the party here but what was the thinking behind the whole Diplomaticos range? Were they a Montecristo alternative?

Let Diplomaticos remain a mystery - Diplomaticos no.2 never were, or are or will be a representative of Diplomaticos brand - the remaining vitola was discontinued long time ago and let us leave it at that.

But who's to say what is to be considered TRUE to the marca though.

Always been a fan of Dippies.. Have a few boxes in my stash.

I have recently made my way back from a brief cigar hiatus only to find most

of these are now discontinued.

I will have to scoop up a couple of boxes of each, just to have. I do enjoy them

but they are nothing to freak out and go super deep about. (like LFDC Coronas,

RA Coronas, Punch Ninfas, Partagas Charlottes, etc.)

If any of the Dip's I put away come out like the vintage Dip 7's I have, I will

be a happy gent.

I really like diplos, burned through a box of #4's back in the day and only have two left. I only smoked two #2's but they were pretty good.

For those of you who have a lot of experience with the #2's, how long do you typically age them? I had a couple fresh ones from my 2013 box when I first got them and they were pretty good. Just wondering how these develop in time and when is it ideal to smoke these?

Posted

Having just discovered/begun enjoying Diplos myself, I am disheartened that the older vitolas - specifically the #6 and 7 - are no longer available. The #2 is good, but I don't prefer piramides at all.

Oh well, HSA knows what people want, right?potty.gif

Love me the Dip 4, Dip 2 is probably one of my favorite Pyramides but i'm not a fan of that shape in general...The Dip Spanish RE for me does not have the same DNA as the Dip 4 or Dip 2. Its a decent cigar but nothing more
