I love almost all the Diplos, I will be sad when my boxes are finally gone.

Okay, honest question. So I've heard the Diplomaticos described as a milder Montecristo blend, and as far as I can tell they have a pretty strong cult following. So why are Diplomaticos so beloved and Monte Opens saddled with such an awful reputation if they are both supposed to be milder montecristo blends?

I don't see them as mild Monte blends, I don't see them as Monte blends at all.

In regard to Monte Opens...... Well , if you like smoking roof shingles, Opens are spot on!

The Diplomaticos line has nothing in commun with the Montecristo, except the sizes. I don't know who started the "cheaper version of Montecristo" myth; as a matter of fact I've heard it parroted countless times in cigar shops by people who never took the time to make a comparison. To me they are closer to the RyJ line.

I think there is a quote about it on CCW...

CCW states the following:

"Diplomáticos cigars were originally packaged in Semi Boite Nature (SBN) boxes. Standard dress boxes were introduced c1975.

It was originally intended to be a cheaper version of the popular Montecristo brand."

Because that's what MRN wrote. Maybe they were cheaper in 1966 (date of introduction on the french market), but in the 90's the difference in price with Montecristo was very small on most european markets.

I guess without judging the validity of the claim, this explains where some people may be getting it from :)

Fair enough...it started out as a cheaper alternative but demand brought up the price over time, that's simple Economics. Judging by how some of you have lamented over the Diplomaticos line I've got to try out the No.2 at some point this year.

I generally smoke darker, stronger cigars- LCDH, RE and LEs in order of preference,, but recently developed a taste for milder, floral stuff. Dippy and SC fit the bill very well. Old skool taste!

Was lucky to find aged boxes of each. Based on my rate of consumption, I may try to get a few more before they disappear..

SC is exactly the opposite of the "old school" taste…

I've had some excellent No 2's both aged (2000) and more recent. The No 4's I've smoked have been delicious. Also had an aged Dip 7 recently. Simply glorious. :) Never tried any of the RE Dips though so I can't say if they're blended similarly.
