beamer Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 As the guy with the humidor, I'm counted on to maintain a number of cigars for grilling, get-togethers, picnics, and parties. Running out of the usual cigars I used to keep for friends and guests, I'm looking for something in Coronas Gorda size for there sorts of things. Why this size in particular? Not too large, not too small. I suppose I could keep Robustos around, but lets play with the CG for now. I love my Mag 46 and Siglo IV, but I'm not sure they're the right fit for this. The Mag 46 requires some attention to fully enjoy the complexity and the Siglo IV can be a bit expensive for what I'm looking for. So do you like Punch? Hoyo Epi 1? Juan Lopez? I realize there are some that are discontinued. Lets keep it to current production. Ideally something that is approachable young, but would age well if I lost a couple of them in the humidor. Thanks!
beamer Posted March 21, 2014 Author Posted March 21, 2014 Hoyo Epi 1 Could you tell me a bit about it? I do have a soft spot for Hoyo, but I haven't read much about the Epi 1. Is it more similar to an Epi 2 or a des Dieux? Or neither?
sengjc Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Probably closer to an Epi 2 than a des dieux. I am just reading into your requirements and I am thinking Epi 1 would seem to fit in. It's not particularly strong or full bodied so it should have a wider appeal.
westg Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Smoked a Ramon Allones Superiores yesterday , very nice toasted tobacco and leather , a complex smoke, construction is perfect. Unfortunately only come in 10 count box's as you probably know. A really great coronas gorda , tonight however I smoked a Por Larranaga petit corona and I could not think of a better cigar to hand out amongst a group of friends...medium, nicely balanced a beautiful cigar and so reasonably priced in a 50 cab. 1
Smallclub Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 I love my Mag 46 and Siglo IV, but I'm not sure they're the right fit for this. The Mag 46 requires some attention to fully enjoy the complexity and the Siglo IV can be a bit expensive for what I'm looking for. The best feature of the CG size is its balance between intensity and complexity, thus they all require some attention to be enjoyed IMHO. For grillings, etc. I'd stick to pc and the "odd corona" sizes like cremas or eminentes: Upmann Majestic, Partagas Super Partagas, Hoyo palmas extra, Upmann corona major, Partagas pc especiale, etc. 4
Troels Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 +1 on the RA superiores Flavourful, fairly affordable
joshua84 Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Epi 1 for me. Until now, the perfect cigar for an afternoon or warm night. I had trouble with the mag 46. Not light enough without food and not full enough after dinner.
Dbone Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 The feel of the CG just sits right in my hand. A little longer than a robusto, little slimmer too. The bigger brother to the most classy cigar in my opinion, the corona. While the offerings are a bit limited, you really can't go wrong with any brand that offer them. In my collection you'll find Mag 46 and Epi 1. The Mag46 I've been pulling from are '09 and the sharp edges are coming off, but still well in it's prime maturing well. The Hoyo really don't get much time to age in my collection they're just a pleasant, smooth operator. If I see customs in this format I buy real strong, usually the smaller RG are a bit rarer. 2
beamer Posted March 21, 2014 Author Posted March 21, 2014 Always fun to see what other suggestions you get when you ask specifically for a Coronas Gorda I kid, I kid. I expected the Epi 1 to be popular as a middle of the road suggestion. Are the Punch and Juan Lopez a bit more rough around the edges young? I don't like the JL#2 without a couple of years on it. 1
PapaDisco Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Unlike some of these other surly posters I'm not going to try and talk you out of your size choice. Yes the PC or Mareva is a good size for first timers, but for your established crew I concur that the Corona Gorda is perfecto. The Robusto is yesterday's splurge, keeping up with modern times and etiquette requires one to splash around a longer, more stylish stick than the blunt instrument that is a robusto Definitely equip your humi with a 25 box of Punch Punch. Smokes well young and only gets better and is pretty affordable for a nice CG. The Yoyo Epi 1 is also lovely and I've got those in my box, but so far they seem to need more age on them than the Punch, so once those are 5 years out you're golden. I also concur on the RA Superiores: a light to medium smoke that comes out of the box ready to smoke at just 2 years old. Lots of light, toasted, hay qualities and hard not to like for any palate. And throw a box of good 'ol Monte 4's in their for when somebody brings a newbie . . . oops, did I just try to talk you out . . . nah!
next Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Great CG size.... from my humidor in this order: Punch Punch HdM Nº1 Juan Lopez Nº1
MC4 Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 I've only tried Punch Punch Tubo and really like it. 1
Jamesuk Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 JL no1 but it does need some age as mentioned about. Superb draw though... Watches and Cigars.
ramon_cojones Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 It's not like there are that many CGs to talk about and some alternative ideas such as the ones smallclub alluded to are definitely worth considering because, well, they are valid points to consider.

greenpimp Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 I love this size and there are many great options. Don't count out the JL #1. Not the most popular, you can usually find a box with a couple years or so on it, and fairly cheap for the size. The flavors are pronounced and tasty, not too complicated of a cigar (young). Have had good success handing these out to guests at dinner parties, regardless of cigar smoking "experience".
sw15825 Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Yes JL# 1 is nice and like you said available with some age generally. I tried the first from a box, at one year old, this week, a nice cigar and like last couple years, tastes like it allready has 2 or more years on it.
Habana Mike Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 Siglo IV's a good go to for me, granted a bit pricey. Got a box of JL #1 in the humi but reach for the #2 more often. I was a big Mag 46 fan for quite some time though I've lost the love for these of late, smoking the SW for my main Upmann fix. Used to smoke quite a few of the SLR Serie A but haven't had one in a while. Give them a try see if you like the profile. I hear Punch Punch has come back from the "don't buy" list though I've not had faith in these for a few years - too many bland and plugged examples, may be worth a shot now. Since we're talking CGs, I do love me some Punch RS11, shame they were discontinued. That and the BP...I know, not supposed to bring these up but can't help myself. ERDM Grand Coronas were nice in the day as was the HU Super Corona - hated to see those go. All in all I have always enjoyed this size for many of the reasons stated above. Of course to my mind the Cervantes & Dalias are a good option for what you describe too. Maybe we can talk about those next.....

Not many to talk about? Epi 1 JL 1 Sig IV SLR Serie A Mag 46 Punch Punch RyJ Ex No. 3 There are others that are discontinued but easy to find (RG and Boli Coronas Extra) Some great cigars in this size.
