Best movie of 2023?

This isn't the Oscars 😉

What movie have you ...or would watch twice because you absolutely want/wanted  to ?

I liked Cocaine Bear too but thought it wasn't kitschy enough.  Look for preview of a flick call "Crackcoon" to see what I mean.

We haven't seen many films in the theatre these days.  MI was great. Oppenheimer as well.  Surprisingly the Barbie movie had a cerebral element for the adults who had to take their kids to it.  Kind of like how the Simpsons was about cartoons for kids, but writing for adults.  I'll go with Oppenheimer as my pick. Just a brilliantly crafted and acted movie overall.

I'm looking forward to Godzilla -1 from Toho this December.

Haha Same Here. I watched it three times in the first couple days. I really enjoyed it.

I’m starting Cocaine Bear right now. Air was probably the best movie I’ve seen this year and it was just ok. Movies are so bad now, I might as well enjoy one I know is bad going in. 😁

I totally forgot about "Air". I really enjoyed it and watched it a couple times, but totally forgot about it. I guess it wasn't all that good if I didn't remember watching it. I agree about movies in general these days.

While I think overall production value of modern movies is often absolutely amazing, probably the best ever, that flash isn't backed up by much real substance these days.

Agree. Watched El Conde yesterday which was visually stunning and a bizarre movie (which I normally like) but it was just ok enough to watch all the way through.

I felt Oppenheimer was dramatically overrated despite being extremely excited for it; in fact I mostly found it quite boring and too long for its very mediocre screenwriting (which is par for the course with Nolan - he needs to let someone else write his screenplays).

Best movie I’ve seen in theaters this year is actually MI.

My nerdy ass was hoping for a 2023 Dune sequel release but it got pushed to 2024. That was really the only film I was going to go to the theater for. 🙁

No.... that was the one movie I was hoping for as well. I have almost given up on movies, I used to love them. Dune (2021) was ok. Before that maybe Joker... movies after, say 2020, just seem stale and out of ideas.

Definitely out of ideas/ nothing new. Post pandemic, the whole movie industry has been largely terrible. Joker was perhaps the last good one before the pandemic hit. Top Gun was enjoyable. Most have just been "meh". Gladiator sequel? Joker 2? Remains to be seen.

I have three from 2023 that stand above the rest.

most obvious: Oppenheimer. I loved it.

less popular, but still great: The Covenant

Not popular, but fantastic: Boston Strangler

Another ridiculously overrated movie - in fact I left Oppenheimer feeling exactly the same way I did after Joker. A whole bunch of fake filmmaking. But the preview trailers? A+ work. I entered both frothing at the mouth and left supremely disappointed each time.

I'm guessing her pick for flick of the year is John Wick 4?

Looking forward to Killers of the flower moon and also Dumb Money. I think Oppenheimer was the best I saw, although Top Gun Maverick I loved but was the year before I think. It was sooooo cliche' it was hilarious. Watched it quite a bit when drinking. ha ha! I was a little let down by Cocaine Bear. Loved the idea but, as mentioned, could of been a touch more off-beat instead of following a predictable journey.

They were so close to making it a great fun movie.  1st half was witty and absurd, and instead of amping it up for the 2nd half, they finished it with a fizzle.  Too bad.  I was giving it Oscar contention in the 1st 1/2 hour. 😁

Zombeaver is my fathers favourite movie of the last number of years. All he ever does is talk about it.
