We have discussed sleep before on FOH and have come to find that some members survive on as little as 4 hours a night and others (Ken  :lookaround:) need upwards of 10.  it is a pain in the arse when travelling with mates who have an entirely different sleeping pattern to yourself.  Hamlet doesn't go to bed before 3am any morning and is not up before 11am. He almost did me in on the recent trip. Most of you who have been involved or seen our zoom sessions when Hamlet turns up for a cameo.....he doesn't shut up. The incessant "natter natter natter" doesn't stop.  The only break I get is when i hop on a plane, put on my headphones, tell him I am going to meditate, close my eyes.  I warn him that in deep meditation I block out the world and can be almost impossible to to rouse. The bastard lasts 15 minutes and then tries to get my attention but I just ignore him and pretend I am meditating. He asked me on the return trip what type of meditation I was into. I responded "Biryani". "Very powerful Hamlet" I said.  I left out the part that Biryani is actually my favourite Indian rice dish.  No, none of you buggers need to tell him. ;)

Where was I going with this

Sleep!  Some do it easy, some do it hard. When Ravi (COH) and I travel together, I am fascinated that he can deep sleep 8-10 hours on a plane once his head hits the pillow or the head rest. It doesn't matter to him.  I am generally lucky to doze moderately on a long haul flight.

Like many here, I cycle through good and bad periods of sleep. Everything plays a part: diet, booze, exercise, workload, life. I have learnt however that there is one thing that I can not live without and that is a brilliant pillow.......and this is the conundrum that I have.

I have had my pillow for the past 12 years and it is coming to the end of its lifecycle.

My pillow was French made from the down of a now apparently extinct golden goose. It needs to be replaced.

Given the level of OCD in this magnificent community.........I know I am not alone in my need for the ultimate pillow.

Someone please point me in the direction of the best pillows in the world

Sleep for me is a struggle also. The mattress I sleep on is a combo of varying foam densities and thicknesses in layers that get shuffled as my needs change, not a bad mattress but not as good as a tempur-pedic Memory foam that was glorious for 6 years until it broke down sagged in the middle and became a back crippling hammock.   I have been on a perfect pillow quest my entire adult life to no avail. Tried dozens and now use two throughout the night, a Canadian made down/feather combo in king and a regular size Kapock fibre neither are good for full 6-8hrs really. Thus have no recommendations to share. Looking forward to this thread.

I use the Tempur Pedic ergonomic neck support pillows, and replace it every 18-24 months. I find regular pillows quite uncomfortable now, and will request foam pillows over down at fine hotels. Just note though that I am strictly a back sleeper - I think your sleeping position has a big impact on pillow preferences.

I need 8-9 hours of sleep to feel fully rested, and it is enough of a struggle that I prioritize relatively consistent bedtimes and good sleep hygiene. I also kicked bed partners to the guest room long ago, which is an easy sell once they hear how loud I snore 🙃

I changed my perspective on sleep and how important it is after reading Dr. Matthew Walker's book called Why We Sleep. It's well worth the read, the TLDR is that it's super important not to skimp on it and get your 7-8 hours and it will impact positively all aspects of your life and you will live longer.

Absolutely - read enough about sleep and you realize that, after air and water, it’s the most important thing our bodies need.

They’re definitely not for stomach sleepers. Most contour pillows suck, it’s why I’m willing to pay the markup for Tempur.

For the past 10 years or so I’ve been using an oxygen pillow https://o2pillow.com. Total game changer. Three thicknesses and three levels of firmness. Both my wife and I were fitted when we bought the mattress at the time. A size two, soft worked best for me to align the spine. Great for side sleeping.

Casper hit my sweet spot for side and stomach sleeping. I alternate between that and a temperpedic as my 2 pillows.

Definitely take 300mg of magnesium before bed and significantly cut down on my drinking to try and help with sleep. It's done wonders for my HRV while sleeping.

Here's my hack

1. Get an Oura ring - measure everything , daily, weekly, monthly

2. Eat 3 hrs before bed time, this unfortunately may include cigars too :P

3. I don't drink - that has helped a lot with my sleep

4. Hard cut off for bed- mine 10 pm max 10.30 pm - be consistent

5. Magnesium 500 mg half tab, maltonin 1 mg - 1/2 tab - once a week or maybe two if I am jet lagged

6. Sleep mask - https://mantasleep.com/collections - best one's on the market - if you guys need anything I'll ask the owner for a referral code he's a friend

7. Cooling sheets - something like hush blanket bamboo sheets are dope

8. Lotsa No's incoming - No phone, no tv, no laptops, no nothing

Takes 30 days - but I can guarantee you I feel solid after 7 hrs

So many, many years ago, after my divorce, I decided to make some life improvements.  Eat better, lose weight, etc.  Lost a ton of weight so I've been sitting at a 'medium'.  All of that to preface that I've always snored way, way outside of my weight class.  Picture a 6'4, 355lb guy snoring.  That was always me.

Purely by chance my wife and I discovered that if the head of our mattress was elevated, my snoring essentially ceases.

My sleep quality has improved dramatically.  Then I upgraded from an audio alarm to a wake light alarm and I wake up fairly alert in the morning instead of groggy for an hour.

My wife is a bedding and linen nutball. I have to say our bed is pretty comfy to crawl into at night. Like anything else, you can get into truly whacko territory with pillows and duvets.

Take a look af Duxiana. Those are what I’d call super high end without being silly. The only downside is they don’t allow returns I don’t believe and there’s not exactly a Duxiana store in every town. But perhaps in your travels you can track one down.

If you want to take a look into the stratosphere google Elderdown pillows. I think the entry price on them is something like $4K USD for a single standard pillow and then goes up!! Don’t fall asleep with an old Dunhill in your mouth!

Getha pillows from Malaysia. Lived there ten years ago and still have people bringing me Getha stuff back years later.

Latex pillows that I just couldn't live without.

While I can generally sleep well, there are times I'm not relaxed enough.  This works:

https://www.sleepfoundation.org/sleep-in-the-military

The good bits:

Due to the nature of military service, it’s difficult for many service members to sleep for seven hours, uninterrupted, so they end up taking naps when they can. Some may use the military sleep method, which popularized in the book Relax and Win: Championship Performance . This military sleep method was used by World War II soldiers to fall asleep within two minutes. Here’s how it works:

  1. Start by relaxing your entire face, including your foreheads, eyelids, jaw, and tongue.
  2. Drop your shoulders and then your hands, letting them fall to either side of your body.
  3. Inhale and exhale to relax your chest.
  4. Then, progressively relax your legs, starting with your thighs and then your calves, ankles, and feet.
  5. Clear your mind for ten seconds. You might visualize a relaxing scene, like watching the rolling waves at a beach, being in a dark room, or swinging in a hammock looking at clouds in the sky. When thoughts come up, don’t get frustrated; just let them come and go. If visualization doesn’t come easy, try repeating “don’t think” to yourself over and over.
  6. Once you have relaxed your body and cleared your mind, you should be able to fall asleep.

I watched a ted talk that went into how during long sleep sessions the brain shrinks slightly which allows more fluid to pass through that cleans out waste.

Who knows?

Maybe that explains the dirty dreams - all those thoughts from the day being rinsed out!

My youngest has been gradually shifting her 5am wakeup to 6am, the first time she woke up after 6 I pulled her out of the cot and danced around the room with her in delight and gratitude!

I’ve really noticed nicotine and alcohol plays havoc with my sleep quality. 9 hours after a cigar and 1-2 drinks (nowhere near hangover territory) and I’m worse off than 6 hours on a clean night. As a result I tend to avoid smoking and drinking the night before a day I know I’ll be busy.

MyPillow. Been using one for years and I love it. It’s by far the most comfortable pillow I’ve used, and I love that it’s washable.  You may have dreams of storming the capitol but you’ll sleep deeply.

As far as actually falling asleep, I recommend CBD.  If it’s ‘bed time’ and my mind is still keeping me awake, I drop a small amount under my tongue and I’m sleeping in 5 minutes.

Just when I was falling asleep reading you said this…

Like exercise you have to subtract the time you waste spend sleeping or exercising.

Sleep 6 hours a day instead of 8 and you have 8.33% more waking hours. You'd have to live 7 years longer to equal that. And those are crappy years at the end.

Not saying it's good to neglect sleep. But if you can get by on less...

As for all the heavy snorers. My dad had that, turned out it was sleep apnea and one of those sleep apnea machines has been a godsend and has improved his quality of life.
