what is your worst habit when it comes to Cigars? Thought this would be a bit of fun considering there are stories about cutting cigars in half?

Mine is to take an urgent phone call forget about the cigar and have to relight when the call is finished.

Enjoy the cigar so much, or smoke in cold weather, and I smoke it too fast and I wonder where it's gone! Alternatively, getting too much saliva at the head of the cigar and anticipating a bitter final third!

Telling myself that THIS box I am aging for at least 3 years, when I know I'll have my grubby little paws on one within 30 days...

Thinking I have enough time to finish a cigar before going out, but don't.

Going to bed after a smoke without taking a shower.

Sticking with a crappy cigar because DAMN IT, I PAID FOR THAT!

I'll agree with the first two of these.  Nothing grinds my gears more than when I am smoking and have to put a cigar down for good thinking you had time to smoke the whole thing.  And the shower thing? Yeah, doesn't happen too often but after those long nights or ones when I'm on the road working and not sleeping next to my lady, it happens.. I'll throw a bad cigar right to hell if I don't like it even after paying for it.  Doesn't happen often but I'd  gladly chuck it and fire up something I know i'll like.

Determining that expensive Cohibas are utterly tasteless whenever the bourbon begins to fog my head.

I'm guilty of this too, especially when I get down to the nub.

I wouldn't quite call this a bad habit but rather a natural reaction in some cases ?.  I did this a lot when I first started smoking but over the years for some reason it's stopped.  Maybe I just became more used to it?  Some people claim that spitting while smoking a cigar is a no-no.. I say horses ass, do whatever lets you enjoy the cigar to your fullest potential.  No harm no foul! Unless of course you spit on someone by accident.  I've done that before too..?

Not sure if a bad habit; just particular to me?

  • I cut the head of the cigar over my kitchen sink.
  • When the cigar is out I douse it under the faucet before throwing in the trash can.

Since I completely disagree with my wife's and my doctor's insistence that cigar smoking in general is a bad habit, I refuse to acknowledge that any part of my cigar smoking is a bad habit. ?

I smoke cigars outside 99 percent of the time so spitting is not an issue for me.  What do you do if you were in a cigar lounge and has urge to spit?  I don't like to swallow my own saliva when I am smoking.

I swallow my saliva but my mouth has gotten so used to the smoke that I don't salivate nearly as much as I used to (believe me, I know everyone is different here though and there is no right answer). It also depends on the cigar I'm smoking.

Its hard to do if you're not used to it, but you can spit through the little hole at the top of a coffee cup if you don't want people to see your spit. Pretend your taking a sip of your coffee and just spit into the cup.  I dipped for over 15 years (still do on occasion unfortunately) so spitting into a small hole of a cup isn't hard for me but that's how I would get away with doing it in class or at work. I got to the point where I could even spit down a big straw from mcdonalds or a fast food chain if I really needed, but thats not my favorite.  Certain cups also have larger holes than others so if you find one size you can get your spit into, just make sure you bring one with you to the cigar shop and stuff a few napkins/paper towels at the bottom to absorb your spit.  This is a must do and will help if you accidentally knock it over.... That's happened way too many times without the napkins and its gross lol..

I know it's not an ideal answer but if its something you can do, it might be helpful and more enjoyable for that other 1% of time you sit in a lounge and smoke.

For me it's buying too much and then smoking them too much.

But I love this interview by Marvin Shanken with Michael Jordan. You would think the editor of Cigar Aficianado would be able to light a pre-Castro without the first third looking a burnt hot dog...

I've thought the same thing before when I watched that.  To each his own I guess.

You'd think he would be able to properly light up any cigar without turning it into a "BBQ massacre".

But after meeting him and some of his staff in Havana years ago I gave up hope they would even know what cigar end to light up if not guided by a band. Useless arrogant bunch.

Love how MJ lights up his cigar.
