bsubtown
I have spent more in the last few weeks than I should have all year on CC. I am working on building a variety and developing my tastes and being able to put some away for storage. My question is: Let's say I am all out of money to spend unless something comes up that I won't be able to get my hands on normally. What are those boxes if any? Are there sticks that a neophyte should be looking for to get a baseline of preferences? Thanks
Stump89
Aged stock, RE, or LE maybe. Majority are not worth the price premiums, especially if you've gone over budget which happens to the best of us lol. Your standard smokes are also the best ways to get a good gauge of what your preference is IMO. Also would recommend investing in some cheap and cheerful smokes. If the budget is tight, there are a bunch of great options out there that won't break the bank.

RDB
Aaand relax. Almost everything comes around again, and if it doesn’t, then it’s not the end of the world. Your tastes are likely to evolve a lot, and right now you just can’t predict that. Taste, experiment and enjoy. I remember when I got into wine, I ‘collected’ masses of stuff that I subsequently moved away from. Sold it all.

We've all had the buying fever at one time or another and with it the worry that maybe you'll run out of cigars at some point or miss something magical. Never happens. Just take a break and reload the budget.
Markspring1978
What have you purchased so far? You may consider starting with one of the samplers that Prez has put together. That will be give you options without having to get boxes.
Cayman17
I bought Esplendidos multiple times thinking I might never see them again. Guess what? They keep re-appearing. I really don’t think it’s worth worrying about. Sir Winstons have been seen the least on 24:24 but I wouldn’t lose sleep over it if you miss them. I just had this intense desire to buy the Cohiba Talismans yesterday. FOMO I guess.

Personally I like to try a single or two of the super high end stuff prior to buying a box. Prez offers a wide variety of single sticks and I have a bunch of stuff I haven't tried yet on the way for a couple hundred bucks.

Also as far as boxes to look out for, I would say when the Bolivar BF are at a good price or the Partagas E2's.

I picked up 6 which was a bit too much, given the frequency I revisit RE boxes.
fabes
Figure out what your tastes are first. You will save money in the long-run. We could all rattle off boxes we would jump on in the blink of an eye if we came across them, but who is to say you would even like them. For example, I could tell you a handful of rare vinyl records I would buy if I ever saw them in a shop, but who cares if you don’t like the same music as me. Learn everything you can if you’re inclined to put in the work. Watch things unfold over time. There is real scarcity, boxes that will never come around again. There is manufactured scarcity, essentially the majority of the RE program. You can also come across boxes that are rare, but are sold and resold over and over changing hands many times and nobody is actually smoking them (wonder if they’re any good?!).

An El Rey Del Mundo in a lanceroish format. If these dont sell out in 3 months I will be shocked. Expect super high prices. Expect even higher prices on the secondary market. Chef
I'm glad a fellow newbie brought this up. One detriment of joining a forum where a new found passion is discussed with such fervor is . . . FOMO!! It's a real thing.

If you've been on a spending spree, maybe it's time to slow down. I always find it's really useful to mentally project yourself beyond the point, when the cigars arrive and how you feel afterwards. Getting a box of Talismans might be exciting, when they land, but sometimes high value smokes can feel like a burden, or a mistake once the excitement of the buy is over. I'm usually pretty strict with myself, and can often realise if I want to buy something stupid, and talk myself down from it. Remember a great collection is not only created by the cigars you do buy, but by the cigars you don't buy.

You see most ERs are 5000-12,000 box releases. You can't just unleash that many boxes at once. It takes awhile

You might be right. The PL coronas sold out in 5 months at 1600 boxes. They will stagger the release. They will be gone in 90 days.

I'm half remebering Gemma Freeman mentioning it, in that youtube video
