El Presidente Posted February 21, 2018 Posted February 21, 2018 I wonder what would happen today if at 30,000 feet someone just hopped up out of their seat, walked to the exit rows, stretched…. lit up...and wouldn't stop until he/she finished Would it be mass panic? If on United, would he get three to the chest from the undercover ranger? Perhaps a good tasering by the staff before being gagged and bound for the duration? Do oxygen masks drop? Do they divert to the nearest airport? Remember these days? What exactly is the policy to handle the situation?
Popular Post cmbarton Posted February 21, 2018 Popular Post Posted February 21, 2018 Jesus ... would you just look at that? Ridiculous! There has to be two, maybe three feet between those seats. Forget smoking, I just want to pass someone in the aisle without having to shove my butt or junk in a some poor old lady’s face. 5 2
mozart23 Posted February 21, 2018 Posted February 21, 2018 Most likely, if the perpetrator refuses to extinguish the item, the FA would take the offending item, put it out and depending on the situation would either force the aircraft to divert to a nearby airport or finish the flight with a nice police escort off the plane

shlomo Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 I would help the air marshal. How gross. I remember, as a kid, people smoking in the back of the plane. So, so, so, nasty.
Ken Gargett Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 i would think he'd be soon to regret it. the powers that be would take it badly. i agree with shlomo. it was horrible. i've never had a ciggie in my life and back in the days when i had one cigar every two years, flights with smokers were a nightmare. i remember flying kathmandu to brizzy once and i had requested as far from smoking as possible. bloke in the row in front lights up a massive cigar (not that i had a clue then but i suspect it was not of great quality). i must have been so much more polite back then as i said nothing to him (nor did anyone else). just asked the stewardess if i had mistakenly been put in smoking. no. why would you ask? and then she saw the cigar. he was given the choice of killing it or heading to the very back. never saw him again. 1

First Lady Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 I remember going to Italy in the 90's and smoking on the plane (yes is was a dirty cigarette smoker ) it was the most social place on the plane everyone just sat and chatted LOL 2
Duxnutz Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 Well...... I can recall a few C and D grade celebs who’ve been told more than once to cut it out over the years. Most recently (couple yrs ago) was a male singer of sorts who was enjoying his electronic cigarette walking around like a peacock. Ive actually flown with a few guys who chain smoked literally from engine start to shutdown in a non pressurised airplane (private ops). I’m sure the biz jets you can smoke in and I’m positive it happens on the middle eastern private airliners etc. On modern jets the humidity is super low so I don’t think a cigar would be too enjoyable.
Bartolomeo Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 Remember traveling a lot as a little kid, parents would escort me to the bathroom area in the back where the smoking section was, we would just sit there and get pummeled w smoke if we had to wait, memory still vivid in my mind to this day......my how times have changed 1
Popular Post mk05 Posted February 22, 2018 Popular Post Posted February 22, 2018 Would be nice if the A350 or A380 lounge had a smoking room decked out with a bunch of Rabbit Air. Make Airplanes Great Again. #MAGA 3 1 2
BrightonCorgi Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 Mid 90's on Air India was the last time I remember seeing smoking on a plane.
fitzy Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 Yeah that whole smoking section was a joke. Unless you were in the first couple rows at the front of the plane the stench was pretty bad.
PrairieSmoke Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 Flight from Athens to Tel Avignon the 90s — there was no non-smoking section. The entire plane was full of billowing smoke. Quite a memory!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Danimalia Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 Oh God, you'd probably get beaten within an inch of your life like that dude in Chicago who refused to take a bump on a flight he was on. At least in the US, the authorities are on a compliance culture power trip. Damn near anything can be justified by invoking that bogeyman of non-compliance. And if you were mercifully spared by the authorities, you'd probably have to deal with your fellow passengers outraged at the flight being diverted. Which, hell, I'd probably be pretty ticked off too, if it happened to me. Maybe 10 or 15 years ao, I was flying with my grandmother to Europe from San Francisco. She was a smoker, and the long-haul flights were very tough on her. She said she was seriously considering firing one up, and seeing how many puffs she could get in before they got wise. Then she was to play the sweet, elderly woman who hadn't flown in 30 years and didn't know it wasn't allowed anymore.
TNT009 Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 Could only image how badly your clothes smelled! Holes in seats, ash everywhere, no thanks!
PaulP Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 Normally, passengers found to be smoking on non-smoking flights will at least face a fine (up to $5,000) and at worst be arrested and detained upon landing. Due to stringent security measures, this often causes disruption such as having to land the flight early in order to escort the smoker from the plane. wikipedia

In '91 on United I don't remember people smoking; nor do I remember much smoking in CDG or FRA during layovers on numerous flights. However, as late as 2000, I remember the international terminal at Athens might as well have been a Marlboro (Karelia/Assos) ad. I mean, people were lighting up on the gangway as soon as they stepped off the plane. Had to wade through clouds of smoke at the baggage carousel hoping to see your bag. The old man smoked cigarettes back then.

99call Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 I used to love the slow train from Narita airport, to the city. 100's of 'nothing men' chain smoking camels, and trollys dishing out coffee that tasted so good then, but in retrospect, I was just, sooooo happy to smoke on a train. There is something something so civilised about smoking on a train. It's one of the times when you truly feel sorry for non smokers.
