Just curios to what people think are the best Churchill size cigars (including the Bolivars that were discontinued last year)?

Sir Winstons and RyJ Churchills for me.

I can't fault the consistency of Esplendidos, so if they do it for you, put them atop your list. For me, they're very nice, but not a fave.

I’ve got all 3 of these, and this is exactly how I feel as well.

My '08 Esplendidos are among the finest and most flavorful cigars in my inventory, but I reach for '03 and '08 Sir Winstons much more often.

I really enjoy the esplendidos, but for my palate  they need at least 5 years down, while  the RyJ Churchill and the Sir Winston, a year or two down and good to go.

I feel the same way, although the Esplendidos I had in the 2017 Xmas Sampler was fantastic for 18 months old (MEL Jun 16).

In regards to the original post, I'm sure you are aware @JoeKitchen that we are down to just 3 current regular production Churchills? (Romeo y Julieta Churchill, Cohiba Esplendidos and H.Upmann Sir Winston) Yes, sadly the Bolivar Coronas Gigantes was deleted in January 2017, and before this the Quai d'Orsay Imperiales was confirmed as discontinued from 2015 (but confirmed in 2017).

In my opinion, the Esplendidos, Sir Winston and recent 2015/16 Romeo y Julieta Churchills each have their reasons to acquire currently, but of these I would source the H.Upmann Sir Winston as a priority as these are a seasonal cigar and they are like to go into hiatus soon, probably early 2018 sometime. If you can source the Bolivar Coronas Gigantes, then by all means get that too.

In regards to a general flavour description of these cigars, below is a guide...

  • Romeo y Julieta Churchill - cherry, toasted tobacco, anise or licorice, may have hints of Turkish delight
  • Cohiba Esplendidos - light milk coffee spine, honey, citrus, spice and hints of vanilla
  • H.Upmann Sir Winston - cinnamon, nutmeg, quality sweetbread, light coffee
  • Bolivar Coronas Gigantes - leather, earth, coffee and toasted tobacco spine, may have notes of spice.

Double Coronas have been similarly lessening in number as of late, which is a shame. The thread below sadly needs a little updating, and it was only posted a little over 12 months ago!

I just picked up 2 boxes of the Bolivar CG's.  They look and smell amazing.  Mar 2015.  Plan to snag up some 2016's before I will be unable to buy them anymore.  So sad.

Sir Winston, Esplendidos, H. Upmann Monarchs, Punch Churchills Tubo. Last 2 are discontinued and I smoked them pretty aged can't compare to fresh ones.

Hoyo Double Coronas And Partagas Lusitanias are top notch. The El Morro is great too aged. I also enjoy the Ramon Gigantes

Well, if you want to open it up to Double Coronas, that's a different story entirely...

The question could be which current DC or Churchill to avoid instead.

I guess it could be, but I don't see any reason to avoid any of them. I haven't had a less-than-pretty-good one in ages.

To be fair the aren't really any poor ones, they are all great! They all offer something extra than the usual fare from their marques. If it was me I'd grab 2-3 of each and enjoy the selection :) unless there is certain marques that you hate that is

Sharing the sentiment of @CaptainQuintero, they are all very different cigars, and that is so nice about having all of them in the selection. I could never qualify them in terms of good or bad. Most smoked for me is the Boli.
