One Marca And One Cigar That Just Doesn't Work For You?

Recommended Posts

I image I can't be the only one so I figured I would ask...

What is one marca you just don't like or buy?

What is one cigar you buy but it just never works?

RyJ

I just don't enjoy or buy RyJ. I have a little bit of everything. I keep a good stock of about 18 different marcas on hand...but not one RyJ. I have tried most of them but just can't seem to enjoy the profile. I want to enjoy the churchill or the petite corona but after one box of each and a multitude of other sizes, I just won't buy them. Not sure why but nothing about RyJ seems to provide the flavors I look for in a cigar.

Monte PE

As far as a specific cigar, its the Monte PE. Now, I love a good monte. Great flavor profile across the board, including the Monte PE but I have not had one, not one, that burned correctly. If my rh or temp were off, I'd expect to see this with other cigars but I don't. I keep my temp around 70 and rh around 62. I am smoking a Monte PE now and once again the burn is f'd beyond belief. This one is from 2008 but all of them, aged or recent seem to burn down one side and up the other.

Off to correct a wonky burn...

As far as a marca I just don't ever see myself spending money on, it would have to be Fonseca. Tried them (and all other marcas) early in my CC travels and they're just not what I'm looking for in a CC.

And there are lots of specific cigars I avoid within marcas I do smoke. All the Monte Opens, Romeo #1-3 Tubos, any Partagas Tubos, Hoyo DC, QD Imperiales. Either never had good ones or just not my taste.

I concur with your estimation of the RyJ marca.....I have tried many different formats and nothing has clicked for me...yet. I remain hopeful though. I recently purchased a box of RyJ Churchill's on 24:24 off of "El Presidente's" recommendation. I'll let them acclimatize for a month or so....then dive in! They look and smell wonderful....crossing my fingers.

For me too, Fonsecas just don't cut it, although the No.1 and the discontinued Invictos did have a tad more going for them than the rest of that line. But the Cosacos and especially the KDT's - just suck IMHO

I have never been able to enjoy a Partagas I did have a PSD4 that wasn't terrible recently but other than that I've never had a good experience with them. I never buy a cigar larger than 52 ring gauge. I'm just not a fan of breaking my jaw to smoke a huge cigar.

I don't have any Hdm. I didn't try them all but never liked what I had. Hdm epi 2 comes in mind first. Never did a thing for me. However there are still a few on my list to try.

I am smoking more ryj lately than ever before. Love the churchills, short ch, ex4 pc

I really want Juan Lopez to work for me. Same with Por Larranaga. I try and retry. visit and revisit. So many love the PL, but not me. The exception to the rule is that I have enjoyed REs of each.

there goes my cigar dyslexia again. I love Juan Lopez and don't like SLR. Realized my mistake after reading the next post. I always get them confused and don't buy JLs even though I love them and end up with SLRs even though they do nothing for me. One more reason I really dislike SLR.

Marca: 6 years ago I would've said RYJ except the short Churchill, but today it's flipped--I really like all RYJ I've had lately except the short Churchills? This last box of Pet. Corona I got here as been really nice. Lately I just can't get into Por Larranaga--I want to like them, but just haven't had the right profile for me. Like TopDiesel above I'm trying because so many other people love them.

Cigar: I haven't tried everything, but Monte Master comes to mind for me right off. I bought a box of these because of box date being same month and year of my 30th birthday. Figuring I could smoke one every year for next 20 years, and it might be an interesting thing to do? I should have read the reviews first! They are like smoking wood flavored air to me! I could've just walked around all day with a cedar sleeve in my mouth sucking air through it and achieved same result. Maybe they'll get better?

Marca: Punch

I've had very good quality Punch Punch, Coronations, DCs, and I can clearly see the flavor profile of punch and I just don't like it. I'm not wasting any more of my money on Punch.

Cigar: HU Royal Robusto

So many plugged, and then so many underfilled. I love the way they taste, all the components of a great cigar are there and it just failes every time.

Marca: Bolivar.

They taste too much like Nicaraguans to me. Complex Nicaraguans, yes, but I find the profile boring and the character is not to my taste.

Cigar: HdM Epicures.

Flat and boring tastes of wood. Have tried aged examples that while well-constructed, tasted an awful lot like the Palmas - cheap!

Marca: Bolivar

I've tried this marca multiple times over the years, and admittedly there has been the occasional stick I enjoyed. But overall it just doesn't appeal to me and I don't bother buying them anymore. The sticks I have left are typically what I carry to give away.

Cigar: Partagas Shorts

I know they are hugely popular, but from all the ones I've smoked I've never experienced anything to justify this popularity. These just don't really do anything for me from either a size or flavour aspect. I'll happily smoke other Partagas cigars, but I now give these a miss.

Marca: Por Larranga. I've had about the or so of the pc's and several of the RE's that are raved about but they're just not for me.

Single: the monte 4. Just cannot see what others like in these. Granted I'm not a big monte fan to begin with, but I do like the Edmundos.

Wow. This topic is a bit of an eye opener. I thought I was alone in having a dislike of RyJs back when I started smoking often enough to consider myself a cigar smoker. Most people look at me weird when I share this position. Trouble is they never really did anything for me and given the often premium price tag I steered clear of them until now. Seems they are turning over a new leaf these days quality wise so I recently picked up a perfect looking 10 box of Wide Churchills and are going to give them another go. I am hoping to find that cherry! If these are good might be in for some Churchills.

Marca: Montecristo

Cigar: Monte No.5. Thhis cigar has never wow-ed me in terms of taste. I would want to love this as much as do with the Partagas Shorts but this is a tad too mild for me. And oh, i've often got plugged sticks too.

I do like RyJ and smoking them a lot except the wide ch, haha. Around xmas I had a wide/short/petit ch comparison smoking night. Surprisingly I liked the petit the most and the wide the least. But all of them were under Ex.4 or PC or a chirchill in my book. But yeah we are all different thank god.

Can't get on with Montecristo. There's nothing that I can distinguish in the flavour profile that makes me stop and think about what I'm smoking.

Cigar: PLPC...love petit coronas, love the picadores and the montecarlo but haven't seen anything i like in the plpc's I've tried.

To be fair, RyJ has had its struggles in the last 15 years. It only started to come back around a few years ago, and it's still nowhere near where it was in the 90s. Just about every experience I had with RyJ from 2001-2014 was negative, so I hold it against no one that they weren't impressed.

I think this is why this RyJ mini-resurgence is getting a lot of attention. Those of us who remember the greatness of old RyJ are excited again. Until 1999, I smoked only two cigars regularly--Boli RC and RyJ Ex 4. The Ex 4 was like eating a bowl of tropical fruit. You would not believe it how great the darn things were. There is nothing comparable made today.

RyJ Churchills were just stupendous--all cherry, tobacco and twang--if you could find one that wasn't plugged after 1997. Then, they just started to totally suck, along with most of RyJ until recently.

I'm still not totally back on the RyJ bandwagon but I will say that recent production is on the right track, and I do occasionally buy some.

Marca: HdM. Just never did it for me. It was one of the marcas I was recommended when I started smoking, as it is a mild one, but I could never find any decent flavours in it. Still haven't tried the DC, but the highly acclaimed Epi 2 and Epi Especial were absolute crap for me.

Cigar: Apart from the aforementioned HdM Epis, the Boli BFs just don't do it for me, way too harsh for my liking. Never did try one with more then a few years of aging, though.

Marca: Bolivar. I have tried. I don't mind the strength; it's the hot, dry, raspy harshness that I have trouble getting past. Seems to be a family trait, so I'll leave 'em for others to enjoy.

Cigar: Monte 4. Just a cigar. My tasting note is one word in length: "Why?" So many other PCs that I prefer.
