Ken Gargett Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 holy crap! http://www.skynews.com.au/news/top-stories/2015/07/19/mick-fanning-attacked-by-shark-in-surf-comp.html
muzz Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 That is one big fish! Lucky Mick is still with us with all limbs attached
Orion21 Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Didn't see the shark until he felt something get caught up in his line. I think he just got a sign that it's time to quit surfing and become a professional fisherman! 1
Fosgate Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Pretty sure I won't wade above my ankles for awhile. http://abcnews.go.com/International/surfer-fights-off-shark-attack-bay-open/story?id=32550177
Smallclub Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 I'm sure the guy has smashed the world record in the 50 meters freestyle… 2
dangolf18 Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 I believe the shark got tangled in his leash...so wasn't really any attack. Anyhow, with that trashing I'd be scared as hell. That was a very large shark.
westg Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 That is one big fish! Lucky Mick is still with us with all limbs attached I reckon the shark would come off second best if it came across you Muzz shark fin soup.
muzz Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 I reckon the shark would come off second best if it came across you Muzz shark fin soup. I've seen them while diving and did a great impression of a squid! I think it would be worse on a dull day like that sitting on a surfboard.
westg Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 I think that may of been and investigatory nudge and nibble...a full blown attack would have left a big big bite piece out off something . I love Kelly Slaters response ..I don't know if I should laugh or cry ...lets all be thankful that Mick is ok ...top bloke and great surfer
TheFullMontecristo Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 crazy video. species? hard to tell as only dorsal and tail visible. Mako, Bull, Hammerhead maybe?
Bill Hayes Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Was watching it live beforehand and then went to bed early and recorded the final. Awoke this morning to hear all this. Glad I went to bed actually. I'm a big fan of the surfing tour and Mick Fanning. A bit shaken just watching it. Hopefully Mick and Julian get straight back in the water. Really looking forward to them both surfing in Tahiti next. At one point the commentators said there were two sharks. Great Whites are very common at J-Bay in South Africa so they had the shark spotter boat and helicopter but this one/two sharks got under the radar.
Ken Gargett Posted July 19, 2015 Author Posted July 19, 2015 crazy video. species? hard to tell as only dorsal and tail visible. Mako, Bull, Hammerhead maybe? they seem convinced a great white. i suspect that if the shark had been serious, then it would have been a much more tragic outcome. but a curiosity bite could have had equally dire results. if guessing, i think the shark was little more than curious and fortunately for fanning, ran into the rope first. very lucky. 1

SmittyinAZ Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Lucky indeed. Many here in the states (NC), have lost limbs unfortunately.
Ken Gargett Posted July 19, 2015 Author Posted July 19, 2015 Lucky indeed. Many here in the states (NC), have lost limbs unfortunately. out here, you come away from a shark attack having only lost a limb or two, you are considered very lucky. we have had a big increase in shark deaths (i guess more in percentages than totals, if you follow). great whites mostly responsible. so politicians decided to kill all large sharks in the west. i believe - others could put me straight, i am sure - that at the end of the season, lots of dead sharks and not a single one was a great white.
madbunny Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 lucky son of a ***** just checking him out and wasnt hungry,i think micks moving to the simpson desert
Kyoung Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Suddenly I'm reconsidering my desires to learn how to surf!
Jeremy Festa Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 So many memes already but this simple one is my fave Sent from my iPhone 2
JohnS Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 The words, 'let's go surfin' now, everybody's learning how, come on and safari with me!' no longer sound so innocent to me anymore!

Ken it was basically all tigers and a few bronze whalers.I heard (and this could be tall tales) that basically the fisherman contracted to do the job were using the wrong rigs/bait etc. apparently there's a bit of technique to get GW in particular. makes sense for such a highly tuned predator to be put off especially if normal prey are seals/whales/massive fish. Certainly attacks seems to follow a certain pattern with GWs they have a look or bump you off and have a second hit with a big run up. Bit of a jab punch combo. Looks like Mick got the shark in stage 1 put it off with the punch or the leg rope getting caught and boats came in before shark could go again. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
