craker night on the beach with a huge bonfire not a care in the world

I still have my old BMX Mongoose in the garage. It's a bit rusty in places and needs a good clean up, but other than that, it's in fairly good nick.

Sweet!

I read all of these responses, and went and bought a 24 inch BMX cruiser so I can start re-living my youth.

Riding bikes especially going down 30 foot hills

Catching crabs in the rocks along the shore in Hawaii

Going to the hotel taking group ukulele lessons

Catching tadpoles in the pond behind my house

Trying to make booby traps to try to catch mongooses in the tall grass behind my house

Teasing the cow in the field behind my cousins house and daring each other to see who can get closest to the cow, then running away from the cow

Drinking from the garden water hose

Spam and eggs for breakfast

Camping at the beach and going down to the shore to see my dad and his friends fish. Eating live urchin from their efforts.

Playing with boomerangs!

Gings! (slingshots)

When there is a fresh delivery of brickies sand somewhere in town and you gather the kids and have a huge boondie fight!

Playing cricket on main street coming into town and everyone would drive around the kdis playing the game, including the district cop who would come for his weekly visit to the town. He'd drive around do his thing, then play a few overs with us before he went back to his town 30km away.

When we're all out in the bush riding our bikes and one of us gets a flattie so we dinky each other to the towns car repair workshop and the guy fixes our bikes for us, and oils the chains etc all for no charge of course.

Putting a Brownes Choc Milk carton between the frame of the bike and the brakes so that it would rub on the tire as you ride and make it sound like motorbike.

Making the best damn cubby house in the history of the universe.

Riding the bike to the local store and buying candy for next to nothing without supervision.

Grandma's house on the weekend to eat an old school home cooked Lebanese meal

Getting together with family. Cousins getting together and spend the whole day in the national forest, at the back of the house, climbing trees and exploring.

Watching VHS repeats of 80's and 90's hits ( Terminator, National Lampoons, Blazing Saddles, recorded Chicago Bulls games when Jordan was in his prime )

The good old days.

I went through phases.

I wanted to be a Ninja. Played ninja stuff with my brother for ages. My mum got real pissed when I threw a metal shuriken at him. Ninja stuff was an addiction.

Played heaps of C64 - loved Boulderdash and the The Last Ninja.

Cricket and Rugby League. Me and my brother literally bowled and batted on our driveway till it was dark in summer. Passing and kicking footy in the cooler months. We went to every Raiders home game for nearly 8 years. Back in the good old days where sports were played by blokes with jobs from Mondays to Fridays.

Very brief skateboard phase. My career was cut brutally short by a lack of talent.

Music. I soooo wanted to be Steve Harris from Iron Maiden. Then Cliff Burton from Metallica, until he sadly passed. Had a weird stint with Steve Vai too. Weird timing on talking about this, especially seeing as I YouTubed Steve Vai's 'For the love of god' just today.

I miss having fun, without responsibility.

I grew up on the Isle of Manhattan, New York City. Here's what I miss:

Building plastic ship models, loading them up with firecrackers, setting them to go off in the middle of the Central Park sailboat pond.

Going away to camp in the summer. Climbing mountains in Vermont.

Throwing snowballs at passing subway trains and buses.

Flying balsa wood airplanes off the balcony of our apartment. Watching the firecrackers I had taped to the wings blow them off.

Spending the hot summer afternoons in an air conditioned movie theater and sitting through the double feature...twice...

Snow days off from school.

Unsupervised summer. A bike, fishing rod, and base ball glove and mom never saw us.

I feel sorry for kids today. There was a lot of benign neglect back then and we had our own lives apart from our families.

Wading in the town creek catching crawdads

No cell phones!

The ability to be completely disconnected and it was ok.

Walking miles with a buddy to the convenience stores to buy candy or soda and not ever worrying about getting kid napped or have the police arrest your parents for "child endangerment".

Being told to go out and play! We were not allowed inside during the summer except for lunch and dinner.

Wish we could get back to the simplified lifestyle.

You know, Bugs, Daffy and Elmer etc etc!

No cellphones is a good one.. I try enforce that.. I can't seem to find firecrackers anymore.. Everything else I miss from my childhood but insist and do everything I can to make a part of my kids lives. Minibikes are on the cards, air rifles are ready etc.

I miss playing RPGs (role playing games, not rocket propelled grenades). AD&D and Shadowrun were my favourites.

Did you lose another one?!!

Yes, last Friday wasn't good for me.

The problem is I think there was someone else on the forum known as Two Fingers so I can't use that as a new user name

To bring it back on topic though. I think most of us miss the simple things of our childhood.

I miss things like the wonder of the crystal set my father built me and the first time I put those head phones on and heard music coming from something that didn't require a power source.

I miss coming home from school on a winters day to the smell of coffee percolating on the stove.

I don't miss the practice of dentistry back then though.
