El Presidente Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 We were discussing this on the deck recently. The things you use to do when you were a kid that your kids probably can't do today I have to say I miss... Fireworks (cracker night). Fishing unsupervised with mates for hours/days in the local creek. You would only come in for dinner Camping out in the back yard with friends taking turns on the air rifle. What do you miss...what are your kids likely to miss out on as this world continues to wrap us in cotton wool? 1
JohnS Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Riding BMX bikes with friends around my suburb and coming home for dinner. Playing Handball with my neighbours outside for hours unsupervised. Fireworks (Cracker night) - always held around the Queen's Birthday weekend from what I can recall...finished up due to changes in government legislation around 1981? 2
Orion21 Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 1) Playing golf almost everyday. 2) Organized baseball. 3) Eating whenever and whatever I wanted with no consequences. 4) School, yes looking back on it school was pretty amazing. 1

What kind of BMX did you have? Check out bmxmuseum.com 1

teamrandr Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Great thread Rob! I miss so much but heres a few... Just like John S. I miss BMX. We built jumps and trails. Roller Hockey with the neighborhood kids. Camping with grandma and grandpa. Swimming in general... I could go on the memories are flowing!!!
Habana Mike Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Interesting this. Fireworks (the exploding and rocketing types) just became legal again in my State. I imagine our pols finally realized all that revenue going to the neighboring states could be used here. Leaving the kids out to play alone now seems to be a felony though.....there was a recent case where a 10 year old got home a half hour earlier than his parents and a neighbor saw him playing alone in the yard and called the police. Kid was taken in to protective custody, parents arrested, and the kid's younger brother was also taken in. Didn't see their folks for a month! My kids, now well in to their late twenties were able to experience much of what we did as kids though I doubt theirs will have anywhere near the freedom to do these things as they grow up. We used to be able to leave school grounds to hit the local convenience store to stock up on candy, can't do that any more. We used to ride bicycles all over town for hours on end. Don't think they even had helmets back then, now mandatory. We used to camp out in the yard and roam the neighborhood into the wee hours. We used to take the bus downtown to see movies on our own at a young age. Fun stuff!
Popular Post bugg4672 Posted June 29, 2015 Popular Post Posted June 29, 2015 1. MOM and DAD PAYING THE BILLS 2. Taking the old family trips in the Old Station Wagon 3. Sunday lunch at Grandmas house. 4. Days when there was NO RESPONSIBILITY and NO WORRIES. 5
MIKA27 Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 I miss the days when Summer in Melbourne WAS summer, where you can have a 38 - 40'Ç day and suddenly have a Sun Shower Downpour for 30 seconds, then it heated up again and you were dry as a bone in no time. It sounds silly but even the smell of summer those days was different. I miss my BMX where my brother, neighbourhood friends and I would just get on the bike, ride off all day and come home to eat dinner. I miss Arcades, the sounds and smell of it. 2
JohnS Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Right on! What kind of BMX did you have? Check out bmxmuseum.com Wow...I had a quick look at that massive reference site. I would say my BMX was something similar to a 1981 Redline MX-III...yes, good memories! I miss my BMX where my brother, neighbourhood friends and I would just get on the bike, ride off all day and come home to eat dinner. I miss Arcades, the sounds and smell of it. These are the things I used to do with family (cousins) and friends when riding BMX. Oh, I miss arcades too...I got so good at Galaga! I always got in a game or two after my afternoon paper-run at the local fish and chips shop on the corner. How times change! 2
Overproof Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Great topic. Dirt Bombs Bridge Jumping Booby Traps Movie Marathons at the local cinema I was never scared of opening bills, cause they were never in my name haha. I'll let my son do all the stuff I had fun doing as a kid, if only he has other kids to do it with. So many paranoid and brainwashed parents out there from media and new technologies.
coug28 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Responsibility. Being an adult with kids of your own to care for is HARD. First & Last day of school. The one thing I'll reinforce all day, every day for my 2 boys is to find something you love to do in life. I suffer through every day to ensure that may be a possibility for them some day. They have a nice life, but if they can find happiness in their work life, my work will be done. 2

I remember cracker night getting cancelled somewhere around '85-'86, due to some kid getting fried in the back of a station wagon.
CanuckSARTech Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 What I miss about being a kid? Not having to worry about paying taxes, what day it is, what's coming up in the schedule, bills, being naked, or who's going to make supper. Sent from my iPhone via Tapatalk. 2
khamy Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 yes John, you hit the vein. *BMX riding with the neighbourhood kids. *playing space invaders on my atari 2600 (well kids might be able to play it still with an emulator) *going to the neighbourhood bonfire at the local park on cracker night *Buying a packet of fags (a type of candy in australia that allowed kids to simulate smoking cigerettes)
Londonguy Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Riding my BMX for hours & shooting bottle rockets from my handlebar pad. Fishing all afternoon and into the night. Riding atvs and dirt bikes with no helmet. Learning to work on motorized toys. Getting into mischief w/ friends & it being okay...
topdiesel Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I miss being able to walk unsupervised down the street or down to the river without having to wear a helmet or bubble wrap. I also miss people actually having conversations. A time where parents and friends didn't just stare at their cell phone for hours. I miss taking road trips with friends before the advent of gps. A time where the journey was the destination. 1
Hunter1974 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 building my own toys like bows, sling shots and flips a flip is a a single stick with a strip of inner tube on the end. kids today dont know how to entertain themselves nor do many of them enjoy nature as we once did. Our kids can still use fireworks here on private land we use to have bottle rocket wars ! I would kill my kids if I cought them doing that . I also use to dive off of high bridges and train trussels and I would kick their asses for that too ! Thats the reason I dont tell them all of what dad use to do !
