Strange thread but it's something ice always wondered seeing though there is such a wide slice of people on here.

Has anyone any experience of seeing ghosts or UFOs or such?

Sadly I can't say I do but I know I won't go near a oujii board! :D

What's an ouji board?

a board that helps you talk to spirits from the other side and all that rubbish

Shrink had a very good descriptive thread (last year I believe) where he described with great accuracy an event he witnessed. Coming from most people I'd raise an eyebrow, but reading Shrink's account - I took it entirely seriously.

Just out of curiosity, what would you accept as proof that these things did not exist?

The Haunting of Charleston’s Old City Jail

feature_charleston-585x306.jpg

Built in 1802, the Old City Jail in Charleston, South Carolina housed some of the region’s most infamous criminals, including rebellious slaves, 19th-century pirates, and Lavinia Fisher, America’s first female serial killer. Thousands of inmates died within the structure’s imposing walls and it’s these tormented spirits that reportedly haunt the old building today.

The History

Prior to the jail’s construction, officials used the plot of land on which the building now stands as a hospital, poor house, and workhouse for runaway slaves. Charleston built the Old City Jail in 1802, and the facility housed prisoners until closing its doors in 1939. By some accounts, 10,000 people died at the jail during its 211-year history, be it from execution, injury, or illness. The jail was meant to house 130 inmates but often held 300 people or more. Therefore, it’s not surprising that disease and violence ran rampant.

Notable prisoners at the Old City Jail include Lavinia Fisher, her husband John, Jacque Alexander Tardy, a pirate with a penchant for poison, and Denmark Vesey, leader of a foiled slave rebellion. Civil War soldiers, including survivors of the 54th Mass., as seen in the movie Glory, were also imprisoned at the Charleston City Jail.

Paranormal Activity

Now owned by American College of the Building Arts, the jail is generally off-limits to the public. However, tourists can take the Haunted Jail Tour offered by Bulldog Tours.

Spooked visitors report heavy doors that slam closed, objects that move or disappear, and voices in empty rooms, among other things. One investigation team saw shadowy, humanoid forms traveling down the corridors while another witnessed white orbs floating around the building. The investigators also heard chains dragging across the floor, though there are no mobile chains in the jail. Some visitors also claim to have encountered the ghost of Lavinia Fisher, widely recognized as America’s first female mass murderer.

The Ghost of Lavinia Fisher

In the early 1800s, Lavinia Fisher and her husband John owned a hotel six miles north of Charleston. It’s not clear what actually happened at the Six Mile Wayfarer House, though some tales claim the couple murdered wealthy guests by serving them poisoned tea and dumping their bodies in spiked pits beneath the floor. Other stories claim the Fishers headed a vicious gang that robbed and murdered travelers.

According to reports in the Charleston Post and Courier, two men were assaulted at the hotel in separate incidents but managed to escape. Authorities soon arrested the Fishers, and a jury found the couple guilty of highway robbery. The sentence was death, and moments before her hanging, Lavinia Fisher purportedly screamed to the assembled crowd ‘If any of you has a message for the devil, tell me now– for I will be seeing him in a moment.’

In 2011, the Ghost Adventures crew investigated the Old City Jail and claimed they recorded an EVP of Lavinia saying “the devil” in response to a question. Several amateur investigators have also posted EVPS, photos, and videos that they attribute to Lavinia’s ghost.

I worked at Bulldog Tours in 2005, 2006 and visited the Old City Jail several times. I even spent an afternoon alone there. Though I never experienced anything strange, the tour guides insisted the jail was haunted, and I heard numerous stories from customers who visited the facility. One police officer told me the alarm regularly goes off when no one’s around and that people across the street see shadows moving around the building.

Is Charleston’s Old City Jail truly haunted or has the structure’s gruesome history caused imaginations to run wild? Ghosts or not, I sure wouldn’t want to spend the night inside.

Just out of curiosity, what would you accept as proof that these things did not exist?

The same kind of proof that sceptics want to prove they do not exist, but obviously the reverse.

I guess its hard to know what to want when one doesn't know what to expect.

Ideally if something completely paranormal occurred to me direct, that there is proof alone and regardless if anyone else believed or not, if it happened to me, I seen it, heard it, thats good for me.

Thats a very broad statement mate.

There are many things yet to be disproven but its completley fair not to believe in them.

I can see this thread turning into a beliefs one, I'm all for it as long as it stays nice and we still get some cool stories along the way :)

I was a 'see it to believe it' person up until I saw and experienced certain things, nothing ghosty but those things made me accept that there is more we don't know out there than what we do.

There are obviously some people who make stuff up fir whatever reasons which clouds the real information out there, the fun part is filtering that out and getting the good stuff

I'm a scientist and engineer by training and inclination. Ghosts and ESP of any kind...no experiences, don't believe. Bigfoot, Yeti, mermaids...extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Call me a skeptic.

Saw some crazy stuff flying around late at night in New Mexico, Nevada etc back in the day but me thinks they were more local than UFO.

I do not believe in anything until I see the evidence to support it. Furthermore the burden of proof is on, and should be on, those making the outrageous claims. Just my .02 cheers

This thread is going to derail soon. I can see it now  The world we live in still have some mysteries left. When investigating said mysteries, a scientific method is best. Let's not belittle those who have had "paranormal" encounters. I think CQ opened up this thread for people to relay their experiences. Let's not make it a battle on "beliefs".

Cheers.

I used to be skeptical of paranormal stuff until I lived with a ghost one year when I attended college in San Diego.

I lived alone but my at the time GF, Lisa, would frequently spend nights over. One early morning, probably around 3am, I saw a woman with long flowing hair walking across the bedroom in the direction of the master bathroom. I asked Lisa what she was doing up so early. I got no response which somewhat puzzled me. I turned to my side to go back to sleep and Lisa had been there the entire time. So who was the woman with long flowing hair.

That was the only time I saw the ghost but she presented her powers on 2 other occasions.

Being your typical college student I use to sleep in quite late. One mid morning, the gardners awoke me with a lawn mower as my window was open. I was too lazy to get up and figured I would just sleep through. Upon finally getting up a couple hours later, I had discovered someone had shut my window for me. Again I lived alone

The other time, during a warm summer night it was common to sleep with my windows open. San Diego's weather is usually quite mild and air conditioning is most the time not needed. I awoke one warm morning, thinking I should close the windows and turn on the AC. As is typical with my groggy self, I'd rather sleep than inconvience with getting up. However, when I did wake, my windows were shut and the AC was nicely running. My friendly ghost had once again lent a helping hand.

I was very close with my wife's grandma for almost 10 year before she died too soon. She was like the grandma I never had. She was the matriarch of our family and everyone loved her beyond words. She died at 73 after her 4th fight with cancer. She used to wear one type of perfume all of the time and since her death my wife and I both smell it when no one else is around. Typically it's in our house or when we are at my wife's grandfathers house. We will smell it at the same time or independently. A good example:

My wife: "I smell her! Do you smell that? I smell grandma's perfume!"

She walks away and doesn't smell it and walks back to the same spot.

My wife: "I smell it right here, don't you smell it?"

Me: "No, I don't! this is crazy."

Another example happened a few weeks ago while reading in bed:

Me: "I smell her perfume! Do you smell it?"

My wife: "Yes, I smell it!"

We don't have the perfume in our home, none of her old things. This happens randomly and normally at night when our kids are asleep, but he have walked into their rooms and had the same experience. I 100% believe our grandma looks in on us from time to time and the smell of her perfume is evidence. Call me crazy, but I believe it.
