I went to NYC last week for what was supposed to be two nights and then was going back to NJ this week. Turns out my flight back last week was cancelled and with all the storms it would have been Sunday night I could get back. Since I was going back this Tuesday, I decided just to stay. So my two night trip turned into ten. I did not plan for that, I so ran out of cigars. So for the first time in almost forever I was smoking non-Cubans for a week. Found a nice shop and bought an assortment not really knowing what I was doing but the shop did help. Back now and having a JL1 They weren’t bad but there is nothing like a good Cuban cigar12 points

I hardly post here (or anywhere!) these days but thought this one was worth the effort. Having choice is a first world problem and the usual story is picking a load from the humidor, making a decision and that changing about 5 times before settling on a stick. Bit of fun, been running a poll in our chat group for a couple of weeks now, the lads helping in the process. Cuban Fundamentals winning this week's poll. Partagas Serie E No.2 - MSU MAY 18 Proper Partagas Partagas if you catch my drift.Savoury spice through and through. @ha_banos @SokaKiel @RichUK @GavLew79 and David (whatever your handle is!) @El Presidente we continue to have great laughs and banter. The group meets up fairly regularly and we are adding more to the herfs each time. @gustavehenne you forgot to vote this week but you would of gone New World Roulette anyway [emoji12] Cheer and here's to a great weekend all.5 points

Just returned from Japan, it was a wonderful trip. The food was incredible everywhere I went from high end restaurants to a $3 bowl of udon noodles. I didn’t have much time for cigars but I was able to stop at Edmundo Dante’s in Osaka. Many thanks to @Duxnutz for the recommendation, I spent nearly an entire evening smoking cigars with the owner while having some great conversation. Also want to thank @Meklown for recommending aloha whisky, where I was able to try some once in a lifetime pours.5 points

PLMC (BRM APR 23) on a rainy day, after 30 days rest at 62% rh. ~60 min. to the band, ~80 min. till the last half-inch. Burned beautifully despite the ~100% ambient, voluminous smoke production for such a skinny, no touchups required, only had to relight once around the mid-point but I blame that on my slow pace. The cap smelled bready, and I got some warm salty nuts during the second third, but none of the caramel or dried fruit everyone talks about, then again this was basically ROTT. Feels sexy in the hand.5 points

You don't need may advice on this as you've already responded! I'm sure it was something along the lines of "hey mate - calm down - send the cigars back and we'll be glad to send you a refund". Only writing to share some advice I received as a very young man in business from my mentor ... he once said to me "avoid glandular responses at all costs"! I only wish I could have followed his advice more during my business career - I'd probably have more money in the bank for retirement. A compliment to you and most all of the members here at FOH. I've always appreciated that when the thread gets heated, someone steps in (usually El Presidente or the Mods) and reminds us of the forum rules. Paraphrasing here - Honest, free debate and never make it personal or take it over the top. I only wish that was more common in the rest of the world.4 points

I’ve really been digging this song. I always like to listen to something new and different, and not the music pushed on everybody by the industry.2 points

Had a friend talk me into electronics school for a 2 yr degree. That led to electro-mechanical tech work, then more to mechanics and equipment maintenance. Found out I love mechanical things and thought I would have loved going the route of a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering. But if I reflect honestly, I’m where I’m at because I went the electronics route. Life is good so there’s no reason to regret. 👍2 points

Can't say I'd change much! Would liked to have figured out the talk therapy / ADD medication thing before my mid 30's. I traded having kids for my career in the music industry but it isn't about desiring change as much as it is curiosity of what would have happened. At the end of the day, my tech gig probably isn't as fun as fronting/touring and studio tracking/mix work but it sure pays a helluva lot better (and lets me raise kids in the best city in the world).2 points

....some of the following is even accurate ..... https://www.malaymail.com/news/life/2023/09/15/the-art-of-creating-coveted-cuban-cigar-boxes/90960 The art of creating coveted Cuban cigar boxes Cuban cigar humidors maker Tania Duyos dusts off the huidors at her stand, in Havana, on September 6, 2023. — AFP pic Friday, 15 Sep 2023 7:38 AM MYT HAVANA, Sept 15 — Using a Soviet-era planer, Rene Reyes smoothens the panel of an old cedar door that he will transform into a humidor — an ornate, handmade box used to preserve Cuba’s famous cigars. In a corner of the workshop lies a hodge-podge of discarded wooden beams, doors, and furniture, all used to make the cigar boxes, which can sell for thousands of dollars and are prized by wealthy business people, rock stars, and presidents. “People don’t believe that... these humidors come from there,” says Reyes, pointing to the pile of raw materials. The artisan is working on the replica of a modest humidor owned by American writer Ernest Hemingway, the original of which is displayed at his former home in eastern Havana, which is now a museum. As he brushes the door panel, which he says is over 80 years old, the warm and sweet aroma of old cedar fills the workshop. “The smell of cedar is the best. It is as if it were gold, old gold,” Reyes gushes as he brings his hands full of sawdust to his nose. Cuban carpenter and cigar humidors maker Rene Reyes poses for a picture at his workshop in Havana, on September 5, 2023. — AFP pic Reyes works for businesswoman Tania Duyos, who has spent two decades designing the boxes that keep cigars at the perfect humidity of around 65 or 70 per cent and a temperature of 16 to 18 degrees Celsius. She boasts celebrity clients such as former US president Jimmy Carter, the late footballer Diego Maradona, and Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger. Duyos says she also gifted one of her cigar boxes to another former US president, Barack Obama, during his historic 2016 visit to the island, and that he wrote her a thank you letter. ‘Working wonders’ Cuban cigars are one of the island’s most famous exports and are considered among the finest in the world. Dozens of humidor workshops can be found across the country. Experts say a good humidor can preserve the quality of a cigar for up to 15 years, and even improve it. Cuban artisans use several types of wood, such as mahogany or ebony, but tradition dictates that the interior must be made from old cedar. “Cedar is very favourable” because “it protects the tobacco from bacteria and provides it with the humidity,” necessary for its conservation, explains Duyos. If kept in the wrong environment, even the best cigar loses its quality. With carved, embossed, or painted designs, some of the chests are true works of art and are coveted by collectors. While some are sold for eye-watering prices, more modest versions are also available on the local market. In February, the auction of six cigar boxes raised a record US$11.9 million. The star of the show was an exquisite, circular piece, one meter deep, made of precious woods, with titanium and bronze touches. Containing 500 of the best Cohiba cigars — the most prestigious from the island — it sold for US$4.4 million. Duyos admits that in Cuba, which has been under American sanctions for over half a century and gripped by the worst economic crisis in 30 years, you need to adapt to shortages of glue, sealants, varnish, sandpaper or tools. “We practically work wonders with nothing,” said Reyes. “The secret is the love” of the job. — AFP2 points
