  1. 1. The AI conundrum... Which camp are you in?

    • We'll work out a harmonious co-existence and it'll be largely beneficial to the human race
    • It's gonna go full Skynet on us at some point, dude, and we're ultimately doomed.
  2. 2. Was this a "Don't Make Me Choose" or "No Contest" question for you? (vote & discuss below)

    • Don't Make Me Choose

Simple comp: Two questions (sometimes about cigars but mostly not).

First question will ask you for your choice between two or more things.

Second will be to ask you if that was a "don't make me choose!" or "No contest" question for you.

Vote in the poll, discuss below if you wish

All participants go into the random draw for a 5-pack of MOFOH Robusto Trinity :cigar:

(drawn Friday morning 17th Apr AEST)

We will work it out. I’m old enough to remember so many huge advances in technology. No contest for this cynic.

I think we need to tread lightly. It can spiral out of control quickly. AI models already tend to lie, cheat and hide things in testing.

With that being said Chat GPT is an incredible tool. I use it all the time for many different things. Totally blown away by how amazing it is.

I stay away from AI as much as possible. I just don’t agree with what it does to the environment.

AI is fascinating, increasingly useful, and highly unregulated. Just saying. 😉

Things will get bad before it gets better I believe.

Neurosciences have been driven for decades by an underlying belief/assumption: human brains=computer, so replacing it with a more efficient computer is an obvious step forward.

But it's not, brains≠mind and mind≠computer, I wouldn't dare try to define it because I believe it can't be, but that materialistic point of view cannot, in any way, sum up the whole depth of Human experience of Life. Anyone who's been in love or who's seen his child's face enlighten after learning a new thing knows that no words could describe a feeling like this.

I believe AI, in the end, will be very useful in most scientific fields and it will even help people wake up when they finally realise that there's a lot more to life than cold and reasonable thinking.

I'm not convinced AI is real.

AI just stands for "Always Indians" and is just a call centre in Hyderabad full of people who type really fast.

We’re f*ck*d. 😂

This is the answer, without significant guardrails put on this technology. I don't think we have the backbone to do what needs to be done.

The poll sums up the two major views of generative AI: it will make everything we do better and that's good, or it will make everything we do worse and that's bad. Let me offer a third perspective. It will make everything we do worse, and that's good.

To consider some examples, business communication used to only happen in a spoken manner. Even when writing became available via letters, telegrams etc. it was costly and difficult, these did not replace conversation but merely stepped in when it wasn't possible. Before learning could be assessed through the written word, educators would judge a student's knowledge through probing dialogue (just as many PhD defences are still done).

AI has only been allowed to threaten these domains once they've degraded to a level of impersonal meaninglessness that allows AI to step in and become the final straw on the camel's back. As AI infects our world with its banality, might we take it as an invitation to return to a more personal way of life that AI cannot touch?

Face-to-face meetings are becoming more valuable. Schools and colleges that are stripping back the digital teaching aids are increasing in popularity and commanding higher tuition fees. As streaming services flood their services with films and music largely created by AI to generate broad appeal over the expression of a genuine artistic vision, might I find myself switching off my subscriptions and going out to hear live music or see live theatre performances? Even the most hammy chaotic high school play is likely to enliven me with a deeper connection to the human experience than whatever Netflix thinks it's doing these days.

Like a controlled Australian bushfire clearing the dying undergrowth so that new life can be born, maybe we can reclaim a better world from the ashes of the one AI burns down.

After hearing "Claude"" blackmailing an engineer to not get cut off, I'm done.

I don't think of the technology attempting a 'coup'-type takeover as much as I see HG Wells' vision of Eloi and Morlock type of socio-economic division. How will (or can) society deal with and pay for a larger unemployed and unskilled population? Will it be with empathy or apathy? Is morality a growing notion or a shrinking notion? I'm cynical. No Contest.

Quantum Computing is where it all comes together. I know someone who's CEO of a Quantum Computing business. They rent computing capacity. It's worth picking up a few QC stocks.

You cannot win a random draw by suggesting that it wasn’t random. Trust me, I won several of these draws that were random. They only seemed that way.

The machine will then ask you to become a “Moderator.”  Only then will you begin to understand its insidious nature. My dying hope is that you find this message in time…

😳
