Things to avoid. Worst gift you have purchased your partner?  This may be a salient topic with Christmas coming up ;)

I had purchased my x wife a fishing rod for her birthday once.  Fine rod and a solid reel. I can attest to both after they hit me.

...never used once.

Should we nickname this thread, "giving your partner a bowling ball with your name on it?" after the infamous Simpsons' episode where Marge got a bowling ball for her birthday and ACTUALLY decided to use it, much to Homer's chagrin! I very much look forward to the responses here!

A session with a 44 magnum at a shooting range . I thought it would be a thrill and fun. The only thing that ended up being shot was my foot. It didn't happen.

Took a girl on a fishing trip in Cabo in the 90s. She hurled for hours. She was not happy. Never again.

Well, I didn't actually purchase it as such. But in my 20's a late Saturday afternoon just a couple of minutes before stores closed for the weekend, a florist put out the leftover flowers that wouldn't survive the weekend, for people to take for free. My friend suggested I take a bouquet of red roses for my gf. Sure, they looked a little bit past their prime, but it's the thought that counts I convinced myself. And actually the first few minutes after gifting them they were very well received until the story behind the flowers emerged. I'm not quite sure if I in my innocence told her myself or it could very well have been my friend revealed just to get me in trouble. That would have been exactly the kind of pranks we would have been pulling on each other at the time. She had noticed that the flowers were far from their prime but didn't want to sound ungrateful when I had spent money and made an effort to make her happy

Today, I recognise it was a douche move. I hope she currently is with somebody who makes her happy and really appreciates her for the wonderful person she hooefully still is 🌹

Wife's birthday is the week.  I am putting cash in a birthday card.  Some say it's thoughtless, others say it's the best gift there is.  No one ever said, "return it", or "that's not what I wanted" FWIW.

I’m actually an excellent gift giver.  It is a skill acquired through many years of having to atone for being overly sarcastic - a blessing through a curse, if you will.

Other contributions to this talent include the multitude of serial killer documentaries she makes me watch.  Those hostage negotiators are really quite masterful.

Gifts? Not so much anymore. We do things together, take trips and eat out all under the umbrella of this is a birthday, anniversary, Christmas gift.

When we were dating a looong time ago she mentioned she needed a box for some papers.  I got her a file box for her birthday. She hated it and I thought we might be done. She still has it.

We agreed one year to not exchange gifts for Christmas. So I did as we agreed and got her nothing. Perhaps the biggest mistake I’ve made in our relationship. Don’t fall for it. 😱
